  1. In the library now. Jeff is a short story about two young people and the transforming power of love. It's posted at my "home base" sites but Floyd thought it would be welcome here. -JS
  2. I'm going back to school this fall. I got a Computer Science degree in '86 P. I. (Pre-Internet). Now I'm going back to recharge. So if you see a geezer in class this fall, don't laugh (please).
  3. Tom Clancy has a whole lot of fans and I'm curious: of the four Clancy novels made into feature films, who made the best Jack Ryan? It's hard to bet against Harrison Ford but Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck were both pretty good.
  4. Here's my QAF question: Who is Hunter and has he done anything else?
  5. Guys- You are writing, not doing calculus. No points are deducted if you fail to show your work. When I write, I create a list of characters, make a few notes about them and do a rough outline. Nothing fancy and nothing that I would even remotely call organization. Very few writers write by formula, and those that do look formulaic. Writing gets it written. Thinking about it too hard only makes makes you tense. I think that getting your ideas out on paper (or saved to a document file) is the important part. Once you have it, editing, fine tuning, expansion or retraction are possible. You can even say screw it and start from scratch. If it is stuck in your head, all it will do is give you a headache. To borrow from Nike, "Just write it!" -JS
  6. Well, there's an upside to everything I suppose.
  7. I agree. I'm a big fan of Green's work!
  8. Update: Well here's the news. Good news first: It's treatable and we caught it early. Bad news: I've got glaucoma. Conclusion: I'm not fond of optomologist. They tell me things that I don't want to hear and they poke me in the eyes.
  9. Dave & Chris- Greif sucks and like it or not you're in it. I won't go own with the psyco-babble about it's stages and what not but the numbness that you describe is very typical. As this is your first loss to death, it's important that you learn to deal with it because as you get older, it is inevitable that you will lose other people that are dear to you. You can cope with it and go on or stuff the feelings and leave yourself with an emotional timebomb inside. Take a look at the info on this site. I think you'll find it useful. Link>>Good Greif You have my sincere condolences, JS
  10. Thanks guys... I've had much better weekends. I'll know on the 27th. <gasp> oops, forgot to breath.
  11. I've been having problems with my eyes. Been going round and round trying to figure out what is going on. Thursday my optomologist did a test. This morning she called me and is refurring me to a glaucoma specialist. Oh crap.
  12. Gay Authors Red should be called Gay Authors Pink
  13. I see the Snowdog as Aussie Shepherd/Husky mix: playful, smart, good natured, given to good humor but capable of a fierce bite if you step on his paws or tail. He will nip at you playfully, but not maliciously. If he wanted to bite you for real, you would know it. The Snowdog is not a pup to be taken home on a whim. He's smart, needs to play and if you don't know what you are doing will soon be running your household and moving in his own books-- and laughing at yours. Don't expect the Snowdog to be just another dumb pup. Not a chance. You'll see the intelligence in his eyes and his big fangs smiling at you like he's laughing at an inside joke. Chances are he's laughing at you and not with you. This is not a breed for the faint-hearted.
  14. Historically, everyone that has bombed London has come to regret it. :2hands:
  15. I hate it when friends are fighting... I try to stay out of it and end up pissing off everybody. ...and it's something that I didn't even instigate!
  16. I've got a cat like that. Sir, I've got some really interesting ideas for the Imperial Religion. Starting with- who needs alter boys? How about we replace them with Cabana boys? Instead of all that stuffy MASS business, change worship services to a nightclub format where instead of preists, we listen to stand-up pastors sipping Gin & Tonics?
  17. Just read Spirit of James. Will start in on The Ordinary Us shortly.
  18. OK- as much as I hate to admit it, I'm a Dom virgin. For shame! I know, I know. Pathetic right? As much gay fiction as I've read! How could I have overlooked an author that is as respected as Dom for so long? So I'm going to take the plunge and explore Dom's works! My question is: what's the best story by Dom to start with? I'm ready to jump in!
  19. If you haven't discovered Graeme, his stories are great! New Brother and Fall Creek are excellent. He also has a flock of very good short stories.
  20. Another suprise! First it was jsmith turning 16 and now xander. Following their posts, I had both them pegged as college aged. Ummm I guess reading the fine print would be useful. Darned intelligent, articulate and talented kids! What's the world coming too! Back in my day we were stoopid and we liked it! So what if we got a little dain-bramaged. It was all in good fun. Since you're both turning 16, here's a few thoughts for the occassion. 1) Stay away from under aged drinking. 2) If you can't, at least stay away from tequila. 3) OK. So you're forced to drink tequila. Just don't swallow the worm. 4) So you ate the worm huh? Jeez I hope you don't die. 5) The giant chicken is just a hallucination. Don't shoot at it or try to run over it. 6) OK. So you didn't die. That's good. Now you're in for the hangover. You'll probably want too. Have fun. Remember- there's a time and a place for everything and that place is college!
  21. Very good news. The Wizard is in!
  22. Best Regards Xander! Hope you have a great year.
  23. There are a lot directions you could go. -Pick a few characters and follow them as they grow up and go to college. -Another direction, with the success of the initial Unit 1, take it national with chapters opening elsewhere with some of the original squaddies going to be leaders there. -If you want to go dark, some off the KK's who have been abused or bashed might go vigilante and use their training and tactics to get some payback. (think Punisher) It's your story and from what I've seen it's wide open. I'm sure that we'll enjoy it. I look forward to seeing more. -JS
