It's not what I would've chose for me
I'm sorry if you feel like I got sidetracked
But in this day you've chosen to ask me,
I'm telling nothing but the truth.

Sorry if I'm disappointing you;
If I'm letting you down in more than one way.
But this is who I am, who I'm meant to be.
So bear with me and understand.

It's not confusion, it's not being a rebel.
It's my life, it's how I want it to be.
I'm a god damn firework;
I'll shine wherever I might go.

I'm not asking you to clap for me.
I don't even need your approval.
But it'd be nice for you to be more understanding.
I don't want you to give up on me.

You can't change me, it's not a phase.
You can't cure me, it's not being sick.
Your words hurt and always will;
Brighter days have yet to come.

Mom and dad, i love you.
I know you love me.
I've done nothing wrong,
Whether straight, gay, or bi,
Just remember, I'm still your son.

Coming out is never easy, no matter how people recieve the news. Here the author hints that the news wasn't recieved well and yet through the hurt and resentment, there are glimmers of hope shining through the the edges. Great job.

Too often certain folks, cultures make it so hard to understand. Being closeted all my life and now at 77 the end is near. To have tried first to fool myself and then all around sneaking porn and an opportunity here and there. It's so much better to be who you really are with the beauty of loving who you love not who you are expected to love. Bravo to the young man in the poem.
