Murmers at the Dusk of Day - 3. The Ghosts of Night

This final poem is personal. Here you will find the ghosts of friends and family who have passed as well as the images of those who continue to live and haunt my dreams. Some bring joy and others pain, but they are just the ghosts of the night.

The Ghosts of Night

They come on silent feet in the dead of night

To whisper things forgotten in the ears of the sleeping

Like the ghosts of the past they are

Some full of hope, others full of fright

The end of time shows changing things

The first comes like a stallion proud and tall

A life cut too short but a soul so bright

He whispers of hope, freedom, and life

He seems so grand and I so small

The swirl of time and things change

The scent of roses and the gentle breeze

Once more the woman who brought such life

She tells of pride and hopes for me

I beg her not to go, but to stay, oh stay with me, please.

The pain of time and things change

Frail and gentle, she is the eternal

The woman who guided summers and played with me

The one who reminded me that I can dream

The grand woman smiles and it is so personal

The season of time for things change

He stands before me cruel and mean

Shreds dignity, innocence, and safety

A bully who knew just where and how to strike

Fag, queer, and more used to demean

The scars of time make things change

Another woman enters in like a viper

Tongue sharp and quick to speak

Alive she still haunts the dreams

Boiling my blood and raising my temper

The weight of time forces things to change

Like a cat he lumbers in to stand before me

A thief of heart and part of my soul

His words are unfeeling and leave me cold

Twisting the happy to sad, and the sad to painful

The loss in time changes things.

From the dark a final visitor comes with a gentle whisper

To see the child I used to be with smile bright and trusting heart

Reminding me of all that can yet be at the break of day

As all fade away from the waking sleeper

And that concludes my attempts at poetry. Hopefully they have not been too bad. Thank you for reading. Comments as always are welcome. If you enjoyed, please feel free to click the like button.

I found this poem very lyrical and beautiful, and my favourite out of the three. I loved the contrasts between the characters that visited the sleeper and all the metaphor/similes that you used for them ("like a viper"). They were ethereal yet real and I felt a chill down my spine as I read each one of them! Great job. I especially liked the ending:

"Reminding me of all that can yet be at the break of day

As all fade away from the waking sleeper"

Wraps up the whole thing very nicely, like a fade-to-black at the end of a film.

so much going on in this one. a lot of fascinating images and ideas. a lovely, stately, sombre feel to it. thanks for sharing these interesting pieces. I feel honoured to have been a beta for you! :)
I thank you again for doing the beta read. I find a fresh pair of eyes often helps when writing. One of the reason I am never afraid to listen to suggestions to improve my work.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. While it is personal it is still general enough for those who choose to read it to get something from it. I've always been someone who likes to leave the reader with closure, not always, but most of the time. Here it just seemed natural to do so. Thanks for commenting. Always nice to know what, if anything, a reader gets from my poetry or story.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It is hard to put something so personal for the world to view. I like that you also include some good memories too. Those that love you are never far, still watching you and adding their strength to yours when you are weak from those evil memories that haunt. Beautiful piece
I usually do my best work when I don't allow it to be censored by my own hand. Here I just let the words and feelings flow from my mother to my grandmother to my witch of an aunt and others.
