Murmers at the Dusk of Day - 3. The Ghosts of Night
The Ghosts of Night
They come on silent feet in the dead of night
To whisper things forgotten in the ears of the sleeping
Like the ghosts of the past they are
Some full of hope, others full of fright
The end of time shows changing things
The first comes like a stallion proud and tall
A life cut too short but a soul so bright
He whispers of hope, freedom, and life
He seems so grand and I so small
The swirl of time and things change
The scent of roses and the gentle breeze
Once more the woman who brought such life
She tells of pride and hopes for me
I beg her not to go, but to stay, oh stay with me, please.
The pain of time and things change
Frail and gentle, she is the eternal
The woman who guided summers and played with me
The one who reminded me that I can dream
The grand woman smiles and it is so personal
The season of time for things change
He stands before me cruel and mean
Shreds dignity, innocence, and safety
A bully who knew just where and how to strike
Fag, queer, and more used to demean
The scars of time make things change
Another woman enters in like a viper
Tongue sharp and quick to speak
Alive she still haunts the dreams
Boiling my blood and raising my temper
The weight of time forces things to change
Like a cat he lumbers in to stand before me
A thief of heart and part of my soul
His words are unfeeling and leave me cold
Twisting the happy to sad, and the sad to painful
The loss in time changes things.
From the dark a final visitor comes with a gentle whisper
To see the child I used to be with smile bright and trusting heart
Reminding me of all that can yet be at the break of day
As all fade away from the waking sleeper
