Poems From Oklahoma - 2. Set 2 - Three poems
TOGETHER
Here in this field of ripened wheat
I hold you close to me
For as long as breath will allow.
In this vast emptiness filled with life
We are filled with love for each other
Floating here in this ocean.
Where warm wind moves in waves
Across fecund heads of grain
We start anew our lives together.
Separated no more
We are bound to each other
Like root to ground, like seed to earth.
Springing up to grow
And blossom
And bear fruit.
INDIAN SUMMER
The cool air moves past my face
carrying a gentle sweetness.
The grass lies dark green
under gray skies
heavy with rain.
The hot dry days of August
have given way to September
and the break in the weather
that signals the beginning of autumn
There may be a few more hot days,
but the season has changed.
For awhile will come rain
to fill the ponds
and refresh the gardens.
Then it will clear and begin
what is called in Oklahoma
the Indian Summer.
Day after day of warm bright days
and cool crisp nights.
Days that call for football,
and long quiet walks,
and cookouts under the oak trees.
STALKERS
A yellow cat is in my orchard
He stalks a robin bent on lunch.
Bird holds high his beady eye
Looks for worms on which to munch
The cat is focused on the birdie
Body pressed against the grass
Trembling paws inch ever closer
Nervous tail is jerking fast.
Behind them both, my old gray goose
No fan of cats in any place
Even less when they intrude
On his own private hallowed space
Goose proceeds with neck outstretched
Head held low, his gaze fixed tight
Goose stalks cat while cat stalks bird
I watch them all with great delight
Finally comes the crucial moment
Bird grabs worm, and cat leaps up
Goose attacks with noise and flapping
All save goose are terror struck
Worm escapes within his burrow
Bird to bush and cat to tree
Grey goose triumphs, sounds his trumpet
Struts on tiptoe, hoots with glee
Circles tree with noisy honking
Daring cat to venture down
Cat takes stock and then resolves
To find another hunting ground
