Security - 6. Chapter 6

I knew there was more. I knew Bobby, he wasn’t the kind of kid that would cause a problem without there being a reason. “How old was he at the time?”

“I think he just turned sixteen.”

“Maybe he missed home. I think he’s part fish. The ocean has a draw on young people. Did you know he would like to be a marine biologist?”

“No, but I do know if he doesn’t get a scholarship it won’t happen. His dad and I have talked about it. I told his dad I would loan him the money but he’d have to pay it back with 5% interest.”

“You wouldn’t give him the money?”

“No, he gets things too easy as it is. Look what he does for you. I’m assuming you don’t pay him.”

“No, I don’t pay him, he has freedom here that anyone would find it hard to find anywhere else. He knows he’s welcome here and I trust him.”

“Well, I wouldn’t trust him. Even though he”s eighteen, he’s still a kid.”

“That’s where you and I disagree. He’s more mature than some of the older men who work with me. I’d trust him with the cottage and my car anytime, even if I’m not here.”

“Well, I’ve known him longer and he hasn’t lived with you, so you don’t know him.”

Now he was getting a little angry, I understood more of Bobby’s attitude toward this man. I’m not sure if we would come to blows but I was glad when Bobby said everything was in ship shape.

“Thanks, Bobby. I hate to have to break up the party but I have an early flight tomorrow to California.”

“There are no flights to California tomorrow morning, they fly only at night.”

“One of the many luxuries I allow myself, I have my plane and we’re flying in the morning,”

I said goodnight as they left. Wow was I wrong about Uncle Mark. No question, first impressions need to be taken with an ounce of salt.

That night I called Noah and told him what time I would be arriving. I packed an overnight bag, set the alarm, and went to bed. At first, I couldn’t sleep as I kept thinking about what could have turned Bobby against Mark except for Mark’s arrogance. I chuckled as I thought how fast looks can be deceiving. My alarm set for six woke me from a sound sleep. I got a glass of orange juice and headed out for my run. As I ran along the beach I was joined by Bobby. “Hey, can you keep up?”

“Can you?”

We laughed as we ran along the beach. Running in sand is a new experience if you never have done it before. “What time is your flight?”

“Eight-thirty, time for me to finish my run, shower, dress, and have a quick breakfast at the cafe. If you can join me for breakfast, I’ll pay.”

“I’m not sure. Uncle Mark made a big deal in front of mom and dad about having beers at your house.”

“What did your parents say?”

“Dad said I was old enough but Mom sided with Uncle Mark.”

“Is it safe to assume that your Uncle Mark is your mom’s brother?”

“Yes, and she thinks he can do no wrong even if he’s gay.”

“I take it you found that different.”

“Yes, I heard him tell you about me spending two weeks with him. I didn’t want to do it but mom insisted. I’ll tell you about it sometime. Can I hang out at your place after work today?”

“Sure you can clean the pool. I think there are still hamburgers left and one bottle of beer.”

“Can I sleep there till you get home?”

“Sure, it isn’t the first time you have slept there. Use the guest bedroom. No parties.”

“Aw, I was hoping to invite a few girls over for an orgy.”

After he said that I chased him back to my cottage. I realized that I wasn’t eighteen anymore. When I got there, he was in the pool. “Get dressed so we can go for breakfast,” I said that without realizing he had no clothes here. I was dressed and ready to leave when he came out of the guest bedroom. “You have clothes here?”

“Yes, when gram and gramps lived here they asked me to bring clothes over so I could shower after working in the yard. I just kept updating them. Pretty cool right.” I laughed as I pulled him into a hug and gave him a nookie.

We talked about school. He mentioned his Uncle would pay but he would’ve had to pay it back with interest. “Mom thought that was a good idea.”

I thought to myself, a stingy bastard. I knew what I was going to do in California so I was sure he wouldn’t have to borrow any money. I have thought several times if I had a son I’d want one just like Bobby. Mom and dad thought the sun set on him, that said a lot to me.

We sat outside and had our coffee and breakfast sandwich. Dave walked by, stopped, and told me that the room was returned. “Is it okay if we stay for a week? I think Pete is going back but Jim and I want to stay.”

“No problem, I’ll sign the expense report when I get back. You guys did a splendid job and I have a feeling you’ll be going overseas soon.”

“Certainly if the General has anything to say.”

“Dave this is Bobby, Bobby my co-worker Dave. Bobby looked after Mom and Dad when they lived in the cottage, he’s my adopted son.” I smiled at Bobby as I said that.

Time for Uncle Mark to walk the plank. If he is this penurious and a D-Bag, wonder what other peccadillos are hiding in his closets?

I agree, I can't understand how a mother can put her brother ahead of her son.

I agree with the interest issue.  That seems to be a bit excessive for a loan between family members.  I can see Bobby repaying a loan with a small amount of interest, as a part of growing up with fiscal responsibility, but I’m talking 0.5% or 1% here, not 5%.

Regarding the rest, like the beer, I stand by my statement in the previous chapter.  It’s too early to write Mark off.  I’m not saying it can’t happen.  I’m just asking for people to give him a chance.  He hasn’t explained his reasoning yet.  He needs to be educated and given a chance to change his attitude about Bobby.

Yes, the interest is to high. Chaz will handle that.  We will find out what more about the problem.  One comment that Markl made bother me, "he has it to easy" not sure what he means about that

I saw that comment, also, and wondered about it.  Could it be jealousy because Bobby is popular and Mark wasn’t?  Some people just seem to have the knack of doing things easily.  I was always able to ‘do’ things easier than my brother, but he was more popular than me, but he was always jealous of me for some unknown reason that has carried into adulthood.

As far as the 2 weeks Bobby spent with him, that was 2 years ago.  Bobby was 16, at the height of the ‘idiot’ teen years. 16-year-olds lack the maturity that 18-year-olds have.  (I am not saying they are mature, just that they have more.) Much of this is simply getting older and having more responsibility whether around the home or from outside employment.  Also, the end of schooling is in sight.  I taught n high schools.  I saw this happen time and time again. The difference between Freshmen and Seniors is vast.  Freshmen only see years of school ahead.  Intellectually, they know college is just a couple of years away, but internally, they aren’t there.  Seniors, like Bobby, now see college as the next step and realize they need to take serious control of their lives and everything around them.  Mark, and maybe his sister, haven’t realized that Bobby has matured to this point.  They still see Little Baby Bobby.

I think Chaz will be instrumental in opening Mark’s eyes.  Hopefully, the mother will wake up to reality, also.

Bobby's mother seems to "worship" Mark based on what Bobby said. I wonder if there is something in their childhood that affects Mark and Bobby's relationship. Sometimes it is hard to realize that a child has grown, its means you are older also.

This is also very true.  Is Mark the older sibling? No.  If Bobby is 18, Mom is probably the older one.  It could be she had responsibility for her baby brother and has stars in her eyes regarding him.  You’d think she would be more likely to see his foibles, if that was the case. 🙂

I Bobby said his mother was very close to Mark.  He defended her when they were children. She might be older but not by many years.  She seemed a little subservient to Mark, I would guess she isn't a very strong willed person.

A grain of salt my ass ... I'd need a bucket of salt to stomach "Uncle 'jack-ass' Mark"!!! Interest, are you f'in kidding me??? Talk about taking advantage of someone to make a profit - there's no way he's getting more than 0.5% by the monies being in the bank.

Don't worry as you read the next two chapters you'll see that Chaz has dealt with the issue.

5% interest? How much can you put on love... Wait I didn't feel any there at all... Not sure that it's hate, but something is wrong with Mark.

Yes, Mark is acting like he doesn't like Bobby and wants him to suffer.
