Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 88. Woodland Walk

Come for a walk with me this morning. The trails through the woods always bring out the haiku in me.

New leaves drip at dawn

while grey clouds hug the hillsides,

disguising the rain.

~~~
One wary chipmunk
keeps watch from a mossy log,
perched like a furred bird.
~~~

Long-spurred violets

bloom amongst the wild onions

speckling them with white.

~~~
Catbirds sing off-key,
tuning up while awaiting
the warblers’ return.
~~~

A tiny brown toad

struggles over blades of grass,

surfing the green sea.

~~~
Beech saplings show buds
yet twist and gnarl their young trunks
at their elders’ feet.
~~~

Two wood thrushes hunt

insects on the forest floor,

surprising old leaves.

Thank you for joining me on my rambles. Any comments or conversation along the way is fine: leave a note or thought here.

Yes! Real Haiku! Each and every one of them is a gem, my friend. I particularly like the word painting of a toad pausing upon a sea of grass.

You've lifted my spirits today

I enjoyed this walk a lot, particularly the bird-like chipmunk.  :)

Your writing about Haiku whispered in my head as I filtered through my walks and observations. Thank you for reading these. I’m tickled that the toad caught your fancy.

Thanks for coming along with me on the path through the woods. Chipmunks can be fun to watch - almost as much fun as birds, sometimes.

This is lovely. You always draw vivid images with your writing. As a wolf, people are usually leery of venturing into the woods with me, but I'd happily trot along with you anytime. :)

I think I’d enjoy that very much. This is my favorite time of year in the woods, perhaps.

Thank you for coming along on my walk in the woods. It has been cool, but there’s so much to see and sense and hear.

Your poems woke an urge to go visit the forest. There is something magical about being out there in the morning, isn’t there? You evoked that magic well, I think.

The beech saplings seem like eager children. And the surprised old leaves is a great image.

Thank you for the lovely walk 😊

I’m very happy you ambled in the forest with me. The birds from the south are just arriving. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for joining me. This very morning the winter wren serenaded the world through the mist rising.  It was indeed magical. I hope you get a chance to walk in the woods too.
