A Love to Last - 6. Chapter 6: Things are getting complicated for Ben. How long will he run away from his feelings?

Hey guys, thanks for your patience. Hoping to hear from you. Don't be shy, drop your comments. I love you all.

“David!” Jim gasped, shaking his head. “Why are you angry? I thought you wanted this. You promised we’d do it after the introduction. That’s why I came up with all this…”

“Don’t touch me!” David moved away when Jim wanted to touch him.

Jim’s heart shattered to pieces. “You promised we were gonna get intimate.”

“I don’t care what I said at the time. I also remember that I told you that you were gonna have to give me some time.” He was trying to sound okay but he couldn’t mask his anger. “I don’t wanna have sex with you, Jim, not right now. I am not ready to take our relationship to that level yet.”

Jim couldn’t control his tears. They came flowing like a river together with his pain.

“How could you say that to me? Don’t my feelings matter in this relationship? How long do I have to wait?”

“As long as you can.” David seethed. “And I would love to be left alone. I have got so much on my head and…”

“No, David!” Jim shook his head. “You can’t say that to me. Do you know how painful your words are?”

“Well, I am sorry.” He snapped. “I am sorry that I don’t wanna have sex right now. I am sorry that you spent so much time making all this but forgive me if I am not interested. Like I said, I need to clear my head so leave.”

Jim had never felt so stupid or even have to beg for sex before. He felt like the idiot of the century. He was horny, upset and hurt. He didn’t even know what was hurting more than the other. His boyfriend had treated him so bad.

“Please!” David pointed to the door. “Or maybe you want me to leave you here?”

Jim picked up his clothes from the floor and rushed to the bathroom. He quickly changed and when he came back, he found his boyfriend where he had left him. He couldn’t even stare at him. It hurt like hell. He left the room in tears.

“Fuck!” David cursed under his breath as he furiously took off his shirt and remained shirtless. He felt so hot, so clueless. “Can I have someone clear this room?” He shouted at the top of his voice. “Anyone to come clear this place?”

It wasn’t long before a maid came to his room whom he instructed to get rid of everything and return the room to how it was. A few minutes, his mother came to his room and she looked a bit mad.

“David? Why the hell would you say to him?” She asked angrily. “He was just trying to be romantic.”

“Excuse me, mom, but I’ll appreciate it if you could stay away from this.” He said rudely. “You’ve interfered enough in my relationship as it is. What happened is between Jim and I. I don’t need any third parties.”

“Excuse me!” To say Claudia was shocked would be an understatement. “Are you talking to me like that? Do you realize I am your mother?”

“I do realize you are my mother.” He said without any sort of respect in his voice. “But you don’t have to tell me whatever has to happen in my relationship. I am a grown up and I know what I am doing. If you don’t mind, I’d love to be left alone.”

Claudia gawked in disbelief. For the first time, her son had spoken so rudely to her. She chuckled bitterly and left the room. David was so upset he didn’t know how to calm himself down. He was glancing around, not focusing on anything. His heart was yearning for the boy.

‘I am so sorry, baby.’ Claudia apologized on the other end of the line. ‘Don’t let what my son said to you hurt you so much. My son had lost a very big deal at the company today and he couldn’t think straight. That’s why he took it out on you.’

“Oh my God!” He gasped, touching his chest. “I didn’t know that. I am so stupid…”

‘Don’t say that.’

“But he’s my boyfriend. I should have understood and be more supportive. You could have told me earlier and I wouldn’t have left the way I did. I am so sorry.”

‘I know, but it’s not your fault. My son is also supposed to understand that he can’t say such hurtful words simply because of some deal. You’re more special than that. That’s why he’s gonna have to apologize.’

Jim’s brightened up with a smile.

“Thanks a lot, aunt!” He said happily. “I really appreciate all this support and love that you’ve shown me.”

‘Just make my son happy.’

“I will.”

Claudia cut the call and Jim just stood there swimming in bliss. His eyes sparkled and his lips pulled back in a wide, beaming grin.

“I take it there’s some good news.” He heard his mother’s voice behind him.

He quickly turned and found her staring at him with so much happiness. He gave her a quick hug and held her hands.

“Mom, I am just so happy right now.” He literally jumped like a child. “That was David’s mom. She called to explain why he acted the way he did. It was all a misunderstanding. David had lost some deal and his mood got ruined. He must feel so bad. Let me call him.”

“You are not doing such a thing.” Elena shook her head, surprising him.

“But mom…”

“I know what you are gonna say. But I also want you to teach him a lesson. Let him come here to apologize.” She said with a chuckle as she sat gracefully on the bed. “Don’t let him think he’s gonna get everything easy from you. You need to also show him that just because you approached him first doesn’t mean you’re desperate.”

Jim nodded because what she said was making sense.

“Just listen and learn, my dear son.” She patted on his shoulder. “Your mother is a tiger and I’ll teach you everything. Men are not as strong as you think. Once you know their weakness and learn the art of seduction, you’ll have him in the palm of your hands.”

“Interesting.” Jim smiled brightly. “Because I have been trying for some time now. It seems like David doesn’t want us to be intimate, mom.”

“I know.” She caressed his cheek. “But everything is gonna be fine. I’ll teach you everything and your man will have no choice but to love you crazily. How do you think I have been able to be married to your father for a long time despite him cheating on me 18 years ago?”

Jim just nodded.

“And speaking of that, did you think of what I said to you the other day?”

“I don’t get it.” He frowned. “We talked about a lot of things the other day. Which one?”

“Your father giving a family that boy a family possession.”

“Mom?” He complained, hitting his head. “I thought we were done talking about this. Ben and I are literally two inseparable brothers. It doesn’t matter who gets the family bracelet as long as we love each other.”

“That’s what you think.” An evil grin appeared on Elena’s face. “You might consider him your brother but that boy doesn’t regard you as one. For instance, since you started dating he’s been looking sadder than ever and always finding opportunities to show his vulnerability to your father.”

“Mom, please…”

“Okay!” She raised her hands as if she was surrendering. “But I’d be careful if I were you. I wouldn’t wanna say I told you so. Just keep an eye on that boy.”

“There’s no need. Ben loves me as I do him. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt me.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“I know, I am right. Now can we go back to what we were talking about?”

“Sure!” Elena smiled.

“Alright, thanks.” He faced his mother and wore the brightest smile ever. “David’s 22nd birthday is coming in a week’s time and I want to ask his mother if I can take over and make a surprise party for him. That way, our bond will grow even more.”

“Well, you’re in luck.” She opened her arms. “You’re with the party queen herself. So tell me what you want it to be like.”

“Something romantic, sexy and grand.” He chuckled. “I saw his welcome party and I want it to be more than that. And on that day, I’ll take our relationship to another level. I can wait for one more week, can’t I? Besides, I would have learned more from you.”

“That’s my boy.” She smiled.

The two began planning as Elena taught her son how to drive David crazy and make him his forever.

Ben was seated on the pool area with his legs in the water and his eyes focused on the sketches that he was making. He was trying so hard and yet he knew that he wasn’t doing his best job. Since his meeting with David the other day, he couldn’t think straight and had been unable to eat properly. He was in so much pain that he didn’t know how to soothe himself.

Suddenly, he heard footsteps before he heard a voice, a very deep voice. A momentarily look of discomfort crossed his face but he brushed it off and heard the voice again, calling his name. He slowly raised his face and found David staring at him with such beautiful eyes.

He got so scared, so nervous and quickly rose.

“David?” He gasped as his heart hammered in his chest. “What are you doing here? I thought we talked about this. Please, you’re gonna get me into trouble.”

“I know.” David sighed as he combed his hair with his fingers. “It’s just that I wanted to see you before I go to see Jim. A maid told me I would find you here.”

“You-you have to go.” Ben stuttered. “Please!”

“I am not here to cause trouble.” David tried his best not to lose himself. But the pain he felt was intense. “I just wanted to talk.” He got close and the boy moved back. “I couldn’t sleep last night. I kept on thinking about our meeting and honestly, I have never felt such pain my whole life.”

“David…”

“But I came to a conclusion and I realized that I have been selfish.” He chuckled bitterly. “I have been thinking about myself and not even considering how you’ve been feeling.” He suppressed his tears. “I am so sorry, Ben. I don’t know how to respond to my feelings and putting you in a position in a position where you have to choose between your love for me and your brother isn’t fair.”

His eyes were shining with the threat of tears and it was killing Ben. He didn’t wanna see the man sad or in any situation that would hurt him. At least, he cared so much for him.

“Forgive me!” He put his hands together. “I am so sorry.”

“David, please, no!” Ben quickly held his hands. “You’re making me feel horrible now. I don’t wanna see you so sad because of me, because of what I said. You’re a good guy and I know your feelings are genuine. After all, why would anyone wanna have anything to do with me?”

“You’re special.” David caressed his hands. “You’re an amazing human being and I love you so much. But because of this love, I’ll respect your decision and stay away from you. I’ll grant you your wish and I’ll sacrifice for your sake.”

Ben was holding his eyes in such a way that kept the tears inside the lids.

“Thank you so much, David. I am so sorry. I know this is very painful for you.”

“I won’t lie!” He chuckled. “Worst pain I have ever felt. But I have already promised to stop haven’t I?”

“Thanks.”

“But I don’t know how long I can do this, Ben.” He said with so much sadness. “I don’t know how long I can mask my feelings for you. And I am afraid when they become too much, I might be worse than I am right now.”

Ben nodded. “At least, you’ve promised to try. I believe Jim’s love is gonna neutralize whatever feelings you have for me. You just have to give him a chance and see the kind of person he is. He doesn’t deserve some of the things you’re doing to him.”

“I know.” David chuckled rubbing his tears. “But there are certain things that I am not ready to do with him just yet. I need some time and… I might have said some hurtful things yesterday out of anger. But that’s why I am here to apologize.”

“Then go!” Ben put up a smile but he wasn’t fooling anyone. “He’s waiting for you. Go and make him happy just as he wants to make you happy. Love him as much as he loves you.”

David nodded, letting go of Ben’s hand. It was hard but he let go. When he started moving away, he felt like he left a part of himself, his heart with Ben. But he had to sacrifice to make him happy. He was happy, right?

Meanwhile, Ben felt a myriad of tears drop to his cheeks but he quickly rubbed them. He watched as David went further away from him and it felt like it was the last time he was gonna see him. He was supposed to be happy that David had agreed to what he had been asking, right? Then why was it so painful.

“Hurts, doesn’t it?” Ben heard a very familiar voice.

He nearly jumped into the pool when he looked in the direction of the voice and found someone there, himself. The boy was dressed exactly like him but he seemed much happier and he wore a beautiful smile as he stared at him.

“Love is such a complex thing and yet can be solved so quickly.” The boy said, chirping at him. “You’re such a coward.”

Ben felt a huge lump in his throat.

“Do you know how many people would kill to have such a man in their lives? Someone that loves you and is willing to sacrifice for you? It is a rare thing to find. And just look at that man, he’s very rich and yet so humble just like how you’ve wished. So, what’s stopping you?”

“He is my brother’s boyfriend.” Ben’s voice was barely above a whisper. “They love each other.”

“Do they?” The boy raised an eyebrow. “Or is it something you’re trying to convince yourself? You’ve been running away from love for so long. And now along with hurting yourself, you’re hurting David as well. You very well know he doesn’t love Jim.”

“But I have to…”

“Sacrifice?” The boy chimed in, shaking his head. Then he lost the smile on his face. “How long are you gonna sacrifice for Jim’s happiness? How long will you suffer so that he can be happy? Why is it always you sacrificing for him and when will he do the same for you?”

Ben frowned, feeling a headache. “Go away!” He covered his ears. “Just leave me the hell alone.”

“Why?” The boy yelled. “Is it because you know deep down that I am speaking the truth? You cannot hide your feelings from me, Ben. You and I are one and the same person. Right now, you wanna go to David and tell him that you love him too.”

“Stop!” Ben pleaded.

“You wanna hug him and let him take away your troubles.” He shouted. “You love him so much and it’s hurting you because you don’t think it’s gonna be easy to forget him.”

“Shut up!” Ben snapped, breathing like he was in labor. “No matter what I feel, the fact remains that he’s taken. Call me a coward but I haven’t had it easy when it comes to love. These feelings will go away eventually. I will heal.”

The boy laughed. “You and I both know that’s not gonna happen. You know that what you’re doing is wrong. Subjecting David to such kind of torture isn’t fair.”

Ben dropped his eyes to the ground with his fists clenched. “Our meeting was a mistake. It shouldn’t have happened. I shouldn’t have been so reckless as to sleep with him that night. I wouldn’t have fallen in love with him.”

“Even you cannot stop destiny, Ben.” He spoke calmly. “It can only be delayed. You’ll learn this soon enough. You might think your feelings will go away but they’ll only grow stronger. Can you manage staying away from him then?”

“David belongs to my brother. I will fight.”

But when he raised his head, he realized he was alone. He had been talking to himself, his inner self. He gripped his hair and sat on the pool chair with his face in his palms. Why was it hurting so much?

***

“Oh baby, I thought you were gonna stay with me a little longer.” Jim complained, leaning his head on the man’s shoulder. “Why do you have to leave so soon?”

“Because I have so much work to do at the office.” David tried his best to smile. “I’ll make it up to you when I have more time.”

They were coming down the stairs with their arms coiled. When they reached down, Jim coiled his arms tightly around David’s neck, bringing him closer. He planted a kiss on his lips and then rubbed on them.

“I wonder why I can’t have enough of these lips.” He moaned. “I can’t wait to be sleeping kissing them and waking up kissing them. I love you so much, David.”

David smiled before he leaned and kissed Jim’s cheek. “I’ll contact you later.”

Jim nodded and let go of the man. Just as he was turning, he nearly bumped into Ben. When he saw him, their eyes met and the yearning in the man’s eyes could not be masked. He swallowed and tried his best to smile.

“See you, Ben!” He said softly.

Ben nodded and watched as the man quickly left. Jim was standing there with his arms folded, staring at him with a stern face. Ben wore a smile as he approached his brother.

“Hey, how did it go?” He asked brightly. “I can see both of you happy meaning that you are okay now, right?”

Jim chuckled and raised an eyebrow. “You know when my boyfriend told me he was on his way here, I was so excited and expected him to arrive sooner than expected. But when he didn’t, I kept calling him but he didn’t answer. Turns out you guys were together outside. What were you talking about?”

Ben smiled sheepishly, shaking his head. “I don’t understand.”

“What is there not to understand?” Jim asked rudely, losing the smile on his face. “It was a simple question. Did you lure my boyfriend to the pool so that you could talk to him? I saw the both of you talking and he held your hand. So, tell me, Ben, do you like my boyfriend?”

To say Ben was surprised would be an understatement. He couldn’t understand where all this was coming from.

“You’re not answering my question. Are you not happy that I am with David, Ben? It seems you’ve grown so distant ever since David and I got together. Perhaps you want what I have or maybe you don’t like that I am happy.”

Ben tried to open his mouth but surprisingly, no word came out. He couldn’t believe Jim was asking him that question. Jim on the other hand was staring right into Ben’s confused face.

“We rarely talk and whenever I meet my boyfriend with you, you come up with some excuse to leave.”

Ben shook his head.

“Is that the type of person you think I am.” It wasn’t a question. “I thought you knew me better than that. I didn’t attend your dinner because Aunt Elena sent me to meet a client. Other moments have been times when I have been busy or I am not available. Whenever you’re home, you’re always talking with Aunt Elena. I am sorry if I make you feel that way but I am the happiest person for you.”

He took a deep breath and clamed himself.

“Forgive me for making you feel that way. I am sorry.” He put his hands together.

He shook his head and started heading away before Jim gripped his arm and pulled him back.

“Hey, I am sorry.” He said abruptly, putting up a smile. “I was just joking with you. I know you wouldn’t do that to me. Forgive me.”

“Jimmy, this isn’t funny.” Ben shook his head. “Whatever came into you? David was just apologizing for his behavior and that’s all. If I wanted to do anything with him, do you think I would have done it right in your face?”

“Hey!” Jim touched his ears. “Forgive me. I don’t know what came over me. Please, I am sorry. It won’t happen again. You’re my brother and I trust you.”

Ben took his brother’s hands and smiled sheepishly. “Okay. I forgive you, but you’re gonna have to appease me. Get me my favorite chocolate and Ice cream. Then I’ll consider it.”

Jim smiled brightly. “Is that all?”

“For now.” Ben nodded. “I’ll consider it afterwards.”

“Done!”

Jim literally screamed and wrapped his arms around his brother. “I love you so much, Ben.”

“I love you too.”

Although Ben was smiling, deep down he felt bad that he was hiding a very big secret from his brother. But he knew that if he found out, it was gonna breed problems for the both of them. Maybe in future when things were okay, he was gonna tell him. But for now, he had to keep quiet and let their relationship bloom.

The elevator opened, revealing a nervous looking Ben. He was dressed smartly in a white designer shirt that was tucked in a black smart trouser with black shoes on his feet. His hair was made into braids, making him look even more handsome. He was holding a file that was gonna make his work easier that day.

He walked slowly to the room where he was to meet his client. When he reached there, he took a deep breath before he knocked. It wasn’t long before he heard footsteps from the inside and the door opened, revealing a handsome man who was probably in his mid-50s with short blonde hair and a dark brown designer suit.

“Hello, sir!” He put his hands together, wearing a smile. “My name is Ben Henandez and I believe I am supposed to have a meeting with you?”

“Ben Henandez?” The man extended his hand and powerfully shook his. “My name is Enrique Chavez.” He had a powerful Russian accent. “I have been expecting you. Please, come inside.”

Ben entered the fancy room and it smelt so heavenly. He scanned the room as he was led to the small living room where he was made to sit comfortably.

“I had no idea that I was supposed to have a meeting with a young boy.” The man commented. “A very handsome one for that matter. May I offer you something?”

“Not really.” He shook his head. “Do you mind if we start?”

“Not at all.”

Ben got out his sketches and his tablet and started pitching his ideas to the man that seemed interested in what he was presenting. He was so good at it that he could tell the man was paying attention. He explained things so well just like he had seen his father do at one time and he knew he was selling his products. He couldn’t have been prouder of himself than the way he was at that time.

A few minutes and he was already done with the presentation.

“Wow!” The man clapped, staring at the boy. “Not only young but very smart too. So tell me, how do you come up with all these designs, all these ideas?”

Ben chuckled. “I think sometimes I feel like they just naturally come to me. Maybe I was born with them.” He took a deep breath and looked at the man. “So which ones do you like? I was told that you wanted something specific. So maybe if you can explain that then I might help.”

The man chuckled and moved closer to Ben, a little too closer that it made Ben uncomfortable.

“Well. She was right about me being specific.” He rested his hand on Ben’s thigh, squeezing it. “What do you say we get something as I show you what I really want?”

Ben felt himself get itchy all of a sudden. He could hear his own heartbeat.

“Err… Sir, I am fine. I think it would help out if you explained to me what you want.”

“Good!” The man took Ben’s tablet away and placed it on the table. “Now you’re talking. You see, I couldn’t quite say it when you came in but you’re the most gorgeous boy I have ever met. During the whole presentation, I couldn’t help but study your body.” He wrapped his arm around Ben and pulled him closer. “What do you say, we get to know each other a little more?”

Ben rose from the couch like he had been sitting on hot coals. His heart was racing and a shiver was going down his spine. He couldn’t believe that had just happened. He took a deep breath and tried to stay calm.

“I am not that kind of boy, sir.” He said with so much respect. “I am only hear for business. If you don’t mind, can we please get back to the reason why I am here.”

The man got up from the couch with his hand in his pocket.

“Come on, you don’t have to pretend. I am very good at reading people.” He got closer but Ben moved away. “I am a very rich man and I can pay you a lot of money, even more than Elena is paying you.”

“That’s a nice offer, sir.” He shook his head. “But I am afraid I’ll have to decline. I only came here strictly for business. Please, can we finish this? I need to be somewhere.”

“Business?” The man laughed mockingly. “I don’t wanna talk business with you. If I wanted to do business, why would I meet you in such a private space? And why the hell would I deal with someone like you? I can just meet with the boss herself.”

Ben nodded. “Alright, sir. Then I am afraid this is the end of our meeting. Excuse me, sir!”

He leaned to pick up his stuff when the man grabbed his arm painfully and pulled him harshly and locked his arms around him.

“I am afraid you’re not going anywhere.” He had an evil grin on his face. “I paid a lot of money for this.”

“What?”

Ben tried to push him off but it was no use. He was too strong. Fear crept on his soul, preying on him as his heart thumped harder. He felt fear in the hair on the back of his neck. It was like invisible fingers running along his spine.

“Let me go, sir!” He drew in a sharp breath, trying to let himself free. “Please.”

“You’re so handsome. I am gonna enjoy myself.”

The man attacked his neck and started kissing it like a predator. Ben tried to scream but he felt like the man was squeezing the air out of his lungs. He quickly moved his arms between him and the man, trying to let himself free. With so much difficult, he managed to release his arm and smacked the man across the face.

Free! The man let him go and held his cheek. But at that same moment, he couldn’t see the smile on his face.

“You’re proving stubborn.” He sneered, staring lecherously at the boy. “We can either do this the hard easy way or the hard way.”

Ben tried to run but he was gripped again. Like a discarded toy, he was shoved down on the floor. He lifted his eyes and saw the man sneering victoriously down at him.

“You can stop resisting and we both can enjoy this.” The man spoke as he took off his jacket and threw it on the floor. He began unbuttoning his shirt. “I don’t wanna hurt you but if you fight, I’ll hurt you.”

“Why are you doing this?” Ben said as tears began pouring on his face.

“Because I want to feel good. We can either feel good together or I can do this alone.”

Ben knew he was in trouble and if he didn’t react, he was gonna get raped. He did what anyone in his shoes could do.

“Help!” He cried at the top of his voice. “Somebody! Please, hel…”

The man tore him from the floor and gripped him harshly, throwing him on the couch. His huge hand had covered his mouth and the weight on top of him wasn’t helping matters . His heart was throbbing in his ears, loud and irregular, but he barely heard it, for his mind was clouded with fear.

“Shhh…” The man whispered. “Don’t fight it. I will be as gentle as a dove.”

Ben felt the man’s hand tracing up his leg and the color drained from his face. He moved his hands and began hitting the man hard on the chest but the man took his hands and pinned them on top of his head. He tried to release them but only ended up hurting himself. The only thing able to speak for him was his tears.

Muffled screams could be heard. Ben struggled to be let free but it was in vain. He tried screaming but only muffles could be heard. As the man tried to do what he wanted, Ben shut his mouth and ended up biting the man’s hand.

“Fuck you!” He heard him curse.

He heard a high-pitched scream; he didn’t realize it was his own until much later. Then before he realized it, he felt a sharp pain on his cheek.

“Bitch!” The man snapped, slapping him hard across the face.

Ben cried in pain but his mouth was covered once again as the man stacked his neck and began kissing it furiously. He was fighting, trying to move the man but the more he tried, the weaker he got. He knew there was no escaping what was gonna happen.

David zipped himself up and washed his hands before he went to the huge mirror to fix himself up. He had just been from attending an important meeting and striking yet another deal. He looked smart in a blue designer suit with a white inside and some black shoes on his feet. His hair was made into a quaff, making him look even more handsome.

He took a deep breath and wore a smile, remembering the words Ben had told him. He had a date with Jim and he knew he was gonna have to reach there early because he had promised him.

“Alright, Mr. Paola. Smile.” He said to himself. “You can do this. It’s just a few hours of food and chatting and you’ll be alone again. Surely, you can do this.”

He fixed his tie and got out of the men’s room. For some weird reason, the restrooms downstairs had been out of service. He had to go all the way up and use the bathrooms for the rooms. He started passing the hallway, his eyes fixed on the elevator at the end.

He was passing one certain room when suddenly, he stopped and suddenly felt tense and nervous. His heart began racing and he began sweating. There was a scary tingling sensation all over his body and fear that he’d never felt before. He couldn’t think straight or concentrate on anything.

“Please, stop!”

That was the voice he heard.

“Ben!” He gasped in fear, turning almost robotically. He was facing the door where he’d heard the voice come from. He got nearer, trying to hear the voice again but there was nothing. His hand moved involuntarily to touch the handle and he tried to open it but it was locked.

“Great!” He hit his head. “I am going insane with love. I can now hear his voice everywhere. You’re going crazy, David. Congratulations.”

He shook his head and started going away.

*

Ben heard the sound of a zipper and didn’t know whether it was his or the man’s. He cried for help but the only things were the muffled screams. There was no way he was not gonna get raped. He tried to resist but it was futile.

Then just as all hope was going, Ben heard the sound of something falling and then the man was ripped from him. Before he realized what was going on, the man was on the floor wincing with busted lip. Ben slowly raised his head to understand what was going on. He was blinking repeatedly in shock, staring at his savior, David.

David on the other hand was staring at the man on the floor, breathing like an ancient warrior after its slumber. His eyes glowed with savage fire and veins in his neck stood out in livid ridges.

“How dare you touch him?”

He picked the man up by the collar and punched him so hard he heard his nose crack. But he didn’t care. The man tried to fight but David pinned his arm on his back painfully and kicked him so hard that he smashed his head on the floor. Hot blood began trickling down his face as he wailed out in pain. There was ringing sound in his ear as his skull pounded painfully.

“Who-who are you?” He cried out in pain.

“Your worst nightmare.” He seethed as his foot met with the man’s face. “You shouldn’t have touched him.”

There was a coppery taste in the man’s mouth, the smell of blood at the back of his mouth. He winced and started crawling on the floor. David started following him because he was gonna kill him with his bare hands.

“David!”

David stopped when he heard that voice, so weak. He looked at the boy and seeing the fear in his eyes, he couldn’t stand it. He rushed to him and cupped his cheeks, staring into those teary eyes.

“Are you okay? Did he do anything to you?”

But Ben didn’t say a word. He just wrapped his arms around David and placed his head on his chest. That was all he needed to break down. Gut wrenching sobs tore through his chest as tears escaped his eyes. He held on to David so tightly that he feared that if he let him go, it would be a dream.

“Ben, shhhh…” David wrapped his arms around him.

“I need to get out of here.” Ben sobbed uncontrollably. “Please!”

David didn’t need to be told twice. He wanted to kill the man but he needed to get Ben out of there. He picked Ben up, bridal style and got him out of there. The boy never let him go and he wasn’t gonna let him go too.

Ben was still crying. He had wiped his eyes so much they were red and swollen. The sound of wailing and suffering echoed in the car and it broke David’s heart. He couldn’t understand how someone would want to hurt a person as sweet as Ben. It was just so unfair. Ben hadn’t spoken a word to him.

“Here!” David said as he offered his handkerchief.

Ben took out and started wiping his eyes but the more he did, the more tears that fell.

“I want to go back and kill that man.” He hit the driving wheel so harshly. “I swear I will kill him for touching you.”

“It’s okay. He’s probably gone by now and…” He paused and cried. “…I just thank God that you were there to save me. Otherwise, I don’t know what he would have done to me if you hadn’t arrived.”

David’s face flushed in rage. “I think even God wanted me to save you today. I was having a meeting and I needed to release myself. Fortunately, the bathrooms downstairs were out of order. I had to use the public ones for the rooms. I can’t explain what happened but I was restless when I passed that room. I wanted to leave but I found myself breaking the door.”

He looked at the boy and rested his hand on his thighs, rubbing them.

“What were you doing there?”

Tears raced down his cheeks. “He was a businessman I was supposed to have a meeting with. My… stepmother sent there and… I didn’t know that he would turn out to be like that.”

“That woman!” David groaned, gripping the driving wheel harder. He felt like punching something. “I am sure she knew the kind of client that she was sending you to. How could she do this? What kind of woman endangers a boy as young as you? Doesn’t she have any conscience?”

“It’s my fault!” He sobbed. “I should have known not to trust her or to meet any client in privacy. If you hadn’t been there, what would have happened to me?”

“Shhhh…”

David leaned to the side and placed Ben’s head on his chest, rubbing his back. Somehow, that felt so good to Ben that some of the pain went away. He was so confused that he couldn’t understand how he’d let his guard down and let Elena do that to him. He should have known that it had been too good to be true. There was just no way that she’d have changed overnight and trusted him with the family business.

As the two were embracing, David’s phone began ringing and ruined the moment. Ben slowly raised his head and when he glanced at David’s phone, he realized that it was his brother calling. He looked at David and the man sighed.

Ben wiped his face and tried to smile but failed miserably.

“It’s Jim. Maybe he has arrived at the place where you’re supposed to have a date. You should go to him.”

“What?” David gasped, his eyes widening. “I am not going anywhere. You expect me to leave you in this state and in the middle of the road just to go on a date? How do you even expect me to be on that date? I’ll just call him and cancel.”

“No!” Ben shook his head. “You’re doing no such thing. Jim has been looking forward to this date and I’ll not ruin it for him. Thank you so much for saving my life. I’ll forever be indebted to you. But I will be fine. I just need to go home and rest.”

“To that woman?” He snapped. “No ways.”

“Please!” Ben put his hands together. “Just go and meet him. Please!”

David sighed gloomily, hitting his head. “You’re putting me in a very tight position, Ben. You’re being unfair to me, you know. This isn’t right.”

“I am sorry. But you have to go. Thanks again.”

He tried opening the door but David gripped him and pulled him back. He was staring at the boy who wasn’t even making eye contact with him. Deep down, it was so hard for Ben because now more than ever, he loved his hero. He wanted to hug him but it had been so long since he had felt such peace as he did in his arms. But his hands were tied.

“Can I at least text to know how you are doing?” His voice was barely above a whisper. “I won’t be at peace until I know you are doing. If I get too worried, I might just turn up at your house. God knows I won’t be there for Jim but for you.”

Ben glanced at the man and tears couldn’t help but run down his cheek. He simply nodded without saying a word. He opened the door and let quickly, leaving the man so lonely and yearning to hold him again. David felt so much debate going on in his heart. But he had promised the boy and he was gonna fulfill that promise.

He started his car and drove off.

“Did you dress the way I told you to?” Elena asked with the widest smile. “A little bit seductive but classy as well?”

‘Of course, mommy.’ Jim answered happily on the other end. ‘It’s a pity you didn’t see me when I left. I am almost there and he told he’s also on his way.’

“Good!” She moaned. “My son is all grown up. You’re reminding me of my teenage years. No boy was ever safe from me. But what can I say, an apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Your boyfriend will not know what hit him and before you know it, he’ll be all over you.”

‘Oh mommy.’ He chuckled. ‘You’re simply the best mother in the world. I will rush home to tell you all about my date.’

“Take care. I love you.” She kissed the phone and cut the call.

Her heart was leaping with excitement. Her day was going fine and she was sure that by that time, Ben must have met with an accident. When she thought of that, her face scrunched up as she gave a big, toothy smile.

She chuckled happily and was about to head to the bathroom when…

“How could you do this to me, Auntie Elena.”

It was Ben’s voice. She turned quickly like the hounds of hell were behind her, eyes widened in alarm. Ben was standing just in front of her and he looked a mess. His eyes were swollen and red. And if she wasn’t wrong, the boy looked traumatized.

“Ben!” She gasped in fake shock. “Are you alright? Why do you look like that? Were you robbed?”

“Why did you do this to me, Auntie Elena?” Ben asked in a weak voice. “What did I do to you?”

“What are you talking about?” She shrugged. “My God, what happened?” She placed her hand on his shoulder but he angrily shrugged it off.

“Stop pretending because I know you sent there knowing the kind of man you were sending me to.” There was a tightening in his throat. “This wasn’t a business meeting because that man tried to force himself on me.”

“What?” Elena’s eyes widened, her mouth shaking. “He tried to do what?”

“Don’t pretend you don’t know what’s going on because you had put him up to this.” His eyes were filled to the brim with tears. “How could you be so evil? What did I do to you that you would want to repay me with such evil? Would you have gotten happy if I was raped? If someone hadn’t been there to save me, that man would have raped me.”

“Ben dear…”

“Don’t pretend!” He snapped, raising his finger at her. “I am going to tell Papa about this. I’ll tell everyone what you did. I am going to tell him what you did on mother’s memorial too.”

“Oh my God, what am I going to do? What will my husband and son say to me?” She gasped, touching her chest. “Ben please, don’t do this. I will… I will be chased out.” But then she wore an evil grin on her face and burst into laughter. “And what do you think they’re gonna do, believe you over me?”

Elena jutted her hip and crossed her arms. “You’re one silly little child, Ben. You think anyone’s gonna believe I would stoop so low?” She chirped and started going round him. “You see Ben, being me ain’t easy at all. You always have to plan ahead and look for a plan B. Look around, delusional child.” She laughed. “You’re in my territory and you’re threatening me?”

“I am not threatening you. I am gonna tell papa everything.”

Elena chirped. “I was trying to be a mother to you, give you the same opportunities as I would my son. I had sent you to a big client, trusted in you and then you tried to seduce him. Now that it backfired, you’re… you’re accusing me of setting you up.” She pretended to cry and rubbed her non-existent tears. “I was just trying to be a mother which you have been looking for.”

A flood of tears gushed down Ben’s already swollen cheeks.

“What will Jim say about this accusation? What will he do when you accuse his precious mother of such a grave crime? He’ll hate you. And poor Jerome, he’ll be so devastated when he realizes that his precious innocent son is not so innocent after all.”

Ben sniveled. “What have I done to you, Auntie Elena? I have loved you like a mother.”

“Oh, cut the crap!” She barked; her face filled with rage. “A mother, me? You must have me mistaken for that whore. I told you, whatever that whore did to me… for seducing my husband and breeding a bastard, you’re the one that’s going to pay.”

She gripped his jaw painfully and applied pressure. Ben wept.

“Now you listen to me, don’t you ever talk to me in this manner again. If you dare me, you may just find that something happens to someone you love. And I wouldn’t even be blamed for that.” She let him go and pushed to the floor with a thud. “If I were you, I would watch what I say to me. Now get the fuck out of my room. Now!”

Ben picked himself up and looked at her. “One day, you’ll get what you deserve.”

With those words, he rushed out of the room. Elena yelled out in anger, stamping her foot on the floor. Her hands were clenched and she was breathing like she was in labor. She didn’t just see red but her eyes were red.

What was she going to do now that her plan had failed?

***

Jim entered his house, walking like a model on the run way. He was so tired that he just wanted to fall on the bed and go to sleep. He had spent the day with the love of his life but it had gone the way he hadn’t expected it to.

“Hey baby!” Elena greeted happily as she came down the stairs gracefully holding in a glass of wine with nothing but a robe. “How did it go?”

Jim rushed to his mother and kissed her cheek before giving her a hug.

“It went well, actually. But just not what I had expected.” He sighed as his mother led him to the couch. They sat hand in hand. “I am happy that I got to spend time with David. He was sweet and all but I feel like he didn’t give me so much attention. He was lost in thought most of the time. I was the one leading the conversation the whole time.”

“Strange!” Elena frowned. “How possible is that? You look really sexy and seductive.” She commented, getting a chuckle from him. “Are you sure you did what I asked you to?”

“I did.” He said with a sigh. “But I couldn’t his entire attention on me. We kissed, we walked in the park and he actually brought me back here. But I just wish there was more than we did.”

Elena raised an eyebrow. “Like getting intimate?”

Jim blushed, biting his lip. “Yes! This is like the longest relationship I have had without being intimate with my man. And it’s also the only time I have felt such strong feelings for someone.”

“Patience, my baby.” Elena caressed his cheek. “Let the man die of lust for you. That’s when you strike. That way, a man will always want to be with you.”

“I know.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “But for his birthday, I am gonna make sure that we get more than kissing. I am gonna make sure we’re intimate.”

“Of course, you will.” She reassured. “Trust me, I am sure that day he won’t even have time to resist. Because my boy will be looking so beautiful. So, tell me, how are the preparations going?”

“Well, I will be meeting with his mother tomorrow so we can start preparing.” He smiled. “I just want him to see that I am willing to go to any length to make him happy.”

“He will. Because who wouldn’t be in love with my handsome son?”

Jim was so excited by his mother’s words. He smiled at her, squeezing her hands. Before he could utter another word, he saw Ben coming down the stairs slowly. He looked so quiet, so detached from his environment and there was a sadness in him that Jim couldn’t quite figure out.

“Ben!” Jim called, rising from the couch. “Hey! Hi!”

Ben was gotten out of his thoughts when he heard his brother’s voice. He was still traumatized by what had happened but he had felt much better after taking some rest. He wore a sheepish smile as he went to the living room, trying by all means not to make eye contact with his step-mother.

“I didn’t know you had come back. How was your date?”

“It was okay.” He moved closer and placed his hand on Ben’s brow. “Hey, you okay? You have a bit of a fever.”

“Yeah!” Ben moved Jim’s hand away. “Maybe I am just tired. I had quite a long day. I…”

“Why wouldn’t he be when he just attended an important meeting?” Elena chuckled, rising from the couch. “Meeting with big businessmen ain’t easy, you know? I told him this but some people think when we’re not giving them opportunities, we’re excluding them from the family.”

“Mom!” Jim shook his head.

“What?” Elena shrugged. “I am being truthful here. Ben thought if I didn’t give him a chance to showcase his work, I would be excluding him from the family business. You’re having a very good time, aren’t you, Ben? Especially today, it’s gonna be a day you won’t forget.”

“Why?” Jim raised an eyebrow, staring at his mother. “What happened today? Is there anything I am missing?”

Elena glared at Ben. When their eyes met, Ben got flashbacks of his near rape event that afternoon and it opened a box of pain he was trying to close. A tear went down his cheek which he quickly rubbed. Why was she hurting him so much?

“I don’t want to do it anymore.” Ben said softly. “I think I have learnt more than enough and I already know enough.”

“Oh, I told you.” Jim slightly punched Ben’s arm. “You should relax. You’re on your holiday. But this also gives you a chance to help me plan for David’s birthday party in four days’ time.”

“Errr…” He stuttered. “I don’t think I can do that. I need to start preparing for school.”

“What?” Jim gasped. “You’re joking, right? School is still two weeks away. Besides, you can spare four days to help me prepare for my soulmate’s birthday. You only turn 22 once and I want to be a part of that celebration. It will be a party he will never forget.”

“I would have loved to but… I’ll be a bit busy.” He slightly smiled. “Excuse me!”

“Ben…”

“Let him go.” Elena chuckled. “Don’t worry about him. Besides, you still have your mother to help you.”

“But mom…”

“I know, love.” She held him tightly. “Let’s go upstairs so that you can tell me all about your date.”

“I guess.” He sighed.

Elena and Jim started heading upstairs. She took a glance behind and saw Ben staring at her from the entrance and when their eyes met, she winked and wore an evil grin on her face. She enjoyed seeing the tears in his eyes, the pain on his face. He was very lucky he got saved but she needed to find out who the young man that had saved Ben was. He had ruined her plans. He was the loophole she was gonna have to fix.

***

David closed the door behind him leading to the balcony in his room. He sat on his comfy swing chair and crossed his legs. It was a cold night and he wore only a black short and a white vest. There a beautiful moon and the stars were lighting the sky.

But here he was, nervous like a child. He was staring at his phone, at the number that was displayed on it. He knew that he wanted to talk to the boy but he had no idea if calling him was a good idea. He knew he had promised to text but hearing his voice was what he wanted.

He took his courage and pressed the dialed button. The phone started ringing within seconds and he wasn’t sure if the boy was gonna answer him. Just as he was about to give up, he heard him answer. He quickly put the phone on his ear.

“Hello!”

David’s heart leapt with joy and the world stopped still on its axis. There was no time, no wind, no rain. David’s mind was at peace. He smiled brightly.

“Hey, I am sorry. I know I said I was gonna text but I wasn’t gonna stop worrying if I didn’t hear your voice.” He said abruptly. “How are you doing?”

“I am good.” Ben spoke on the other end. “Thanks for checking up on me. This means a lot to me.”

“You don’t have to thank me because…”

“I heard Jim talk and he said you were zoning out on your date.” He said softly. “Why? I thought I told you I was gonna be fine. You promised that you were gonna do everything to make him happy.”

“I fulfilled my promise, didn’t I?” He sighed, rising from the chair. He started staring into the sky, at the stars. “But I am not a selfish person, Ben. Did you expect me to go to that date and pretend like nothing happened? It’s bad enough that I have to pretend and ignore my feelings. What I will not do is pretend that you were hurt. I was hurt.”

There was silence on the other end of the line for more than ten seconds.

“But I told you I was fine. You’re ruining your chances of spending more time with Jim.”

“I know. But the moments we spent were more than enough. I went there even when I told you I didn’t wanna.”

“Yeah!” He sighed. “All in all, thank you so much. But you don’t have to worry about me anymore. I’ll have to be very careful so that what happened today doesn’t repeat itself. Don’t tell Jim about this, please, you promised me.”

“But…”

“Thank you so much.”

Before David could utter another word, the call was cut. He felt so lonely, so alone. He sighed as he gazed upon the stars, feeling some light shining on him. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

“I don’t really believe in wishing upon the stars…” He said softly. “…but if what I have heard is true then I am only asking for one thing. Set my path straight and show me a way to my happiness without any hindrances this time.”

He went back to the chair and just watched the night skin. It was beautiful and he wished that Ben had been with him in his arms. It would have been lovely to have him in his arms, kissing him and enjoying the view.

‘Maybe one day.’

***

A few days later…

*

A sweet melody was drifting through the whole house that was decorated in gold and silver. There were a number of people all looking rich and classy, wearing a new dress or suit which would be discarded after the night was past.

And here he was, the man whose boyfriend had just turned 22, Jim looking like an angel. He wore a blood red tight designer’s suit with no shirt inside, revealing a big diamond necklace that graced his chest. His red shoes completed the outfit, making him look extremely sexy. He had his hair in blonde ombre bob and his face was graced with makeup.

He had done a good job and he couldn’t help but give himself the credit. The room smelt like vanilla, David’s favorite flavor and there were all kinds of foods and drinks.

“Hey!” He felt someone tap his shoulder.

He quickly turned and wore a beautiful smile. It was Ben and Jim wrapped his arms around him.

“Hey, you made it.” He gasped. “You don’t know how happy I am that you came.”

“I believe I promised you.” Ben said as he broke the hug. “Besides, I want to see how you guys will dance together. I haven’t seen it before.”

Jim took Ben’s hand and spun him. “You look lovely.”

Ben laughed, checking himself out. He wore a blue checked t-shirt with a black skinny jean and black sneakers. His hair was made into a ponytail that reached his butt. He was looking ordinary, but to Jim, he looked okay.

“Come on, you’re my brother. You don’t have to lie to me.”

“And why would I?” Jim raised an eyebrow. “The truth is that you’re a very beautiful boy and whatever you wear will look good. And tonight, I will make sure that not only one of us wins at love but both of us. Look around you.” Jim wrapped an arm around Ben and started pointing. “There are lost of handsome guys, most of them are single. Why don’t you give love a chance? I know I ask this a lot but do it for me.”

Ben smiled sheepishly. “The night is still young. I can’t promise but I will give it a try.”

“That’s my brother.” Jim enthused, hitting his arm. “Do you think David is gonna love it?”

“Why wouldn’t he?”

There was a voice behind the two boys. When they turned, they found Elena staring at them with a beautiful smile. She looked like a queen that she was in a red sparkly dress that fell to the floor and one thing out and red high heels. Her hair was made into curls and then let loose. It made her look like she was attending a royal ball. Her makeup was on point and she looked nothing beyond 30.

“Mom?” Jim rushed to her and gave her a hug. “When did you come?”

“A few minutes ago, actually.” She said happily. Her eyes were on Ben. “I didn’t wanna disturb you so I wanted to see to it that everything was going smoothly. And they seem to be needing more help in the kitchen.” She said as she broke the hug. “Ben, can you please help them? I don’t think I can do anything since… I am dressed for the party. Err…” She paused and eyed him. “…you’re the only one with clothes not that expensive.”

“Mom!” Jim’s eyes widened. “You don’t have to go, Ben. I am sure they can handle it. Ben is here to celebrate David’s birthday and I need him by my side.”

“That’s why I am here, baby.” She opened her arms. “I’ll keep you company until your man arrives. Isn’t that right, Ben?”

Ben lost the smile on his face. He knew she was doing this to make him feel like he was trash.

“It’s okay, Jim. I’ll go help out.”

“But Ben, there are workers for that.”

“It’s okay. I’ll be back.”

Ben smiled sheepishly and left. Jim wasn’t pleased. He looked at his mother with a frown but she didn’t care. She wasn’t gonna let Ben enjoy any part of the party.

“Come on, lose that frown on your face. You’re gonna make yourself ugly.”

“But mom, why did you do that?” He complained. “Why do you always want to make him feel like he’s not worthy of anything? I am sure that there are lost of workers in the kitchen. You’re just trying to make him inferior.”

Of course, she was.

“Me?” She gasped in mock astonishment. “Why would I do that? I want everything to go smoothly. If I didn’t want him to be part of this celebration, I would have made him stay at home instead. I am sure he’ll be out as soon as he’s done.”

Jim sighed. “I hope you’re telling the truth.”

“Sure! Now let’s go find Claudia.”

They coiled their arms and started passing in the crowd, wearing smiles.

Over 2 hours passed and still the birthday boy was nowhere to be seen. It was 9:30 PM and there was no sign of him. Jim had tried to call him but he wasn’t picking up his phone. He called his assistant and the woman informed him that he had left him at the office some hour and half.

Everyone was starting to panic. The guests were becoming impatient and some of them had already started leaving. What had started out as a beautiful event for Jim had turned out to be so bad.

“Have you been able to get ahold of him?” Claudia asked impatiently. “He’s not picking my calls.”

Jim shook his head. “He’s not picking my calls either. It’s not like him to be at the office at this hour. People have started leaving already.”

“What about his friends?” Elena asked. “Maybe they took him out. Remember that he didn’t know you were throwing him a party. It was meant to be a surprise.”

“I don’t think so.” Amber shook her head. “The only friend that he’d have gone with is Isaac and he’s not back in the country. Every other friend was invited here so there’s no possibility of him going out. I know all his friends.”

“Where could he be?” Jim seethed, clenching his phone. “He’s not picking up my calls or any of our calls. What if something happened to him?”

“I don’t think anything happened to him.” Amber replied. “He might be still be at the office. That’s where his assistant left him. I have sent someone to go and pick him up. Either way, he had promised to knock off early today.”

Meanwhile, Ben who was leaning on a pillar watching Jim and the rest of the family worry couldn’t help but worry. But he couldn’t even dare go there to say anything for fear of what Elena was gonna do. So, he just stood there and watched. They were right, people had started leaving. If David didn’t come early, he was gonna miss his own party.

As he was lost in thought, his phone began vibrating and snapped him out of it. He took a deep breath and took his phone out. When his eyes met with his screen, he felt his heart hammer hard in his chest. His breaths came out harshly and he felt a shiver go down his spine.

He glanced at the worried people and thought to tell them but before he made a step, he came to his senses and remembered that no one knew that he and David had been communicating. And if they knew he was calling him, they were gonna question him. He rushed outside and picked up the call.

“David!”

“I need to see you right now.” David said demandingly.

“What? Do you realize what time it is?”

“I know but…” He paused and gave a deep sigh. “…I am not feeling too well. You’re the only one I can call. Please, I need to see you.”

“No, David!” He said softly. “It is late. Why don’t you call Jim to come to you? I cannot leave right now. What will I tell them?”

“I know you’re at a place where no one will even notice that you’ve left.” He said confidently. “I am still at the office and I will send the address. I’ll tell the guard to let you in.”

“David, no!” He shook his head. “Forgive me but I cannot come to you. We talked about this and…”

“If you care for me as much as you say, you’ll come.”

“But… hello… hello!”

But David had cut the call already. He stood there, wondering what he was gonna do. On one hand was David’s family inside the room worried sick, not knowing what was happening to their son. On the other was David who had called him and asked him to go meet him at night. He couldn’t go inside and tell them he had spoken to David. But he also didn’t wanna go to meet him.

What was he gonna do?

***

David was seated on his chair with his legs on the table and his eyes fixed on his phone, staring at Ben’s picture. The boy looked mesmerizing with his billion-dollar smile. Maybe it’s his smile, tender and sweet with just a hint of amusement or maybe it was his eyes, they seemed to glow and call out to him. No one had ever had such effect on him. He loved everything the boy made him feel although the pain of not being with him was consuming him.

“David!”

David nearly fell off his chair when he heard that voice. He slowly raised his head and first saw the beautiful legs, the t-shirt and then that handsome serious face. He chuckled softly, tears welling in his eyes. How could someone be so beautiful, he thought?

“You came.” He said softly as he got up and started going towards him. “I didn’t think you were gonna make it. I was starting to get worried.”

He took a step forward and with slow deliberation looked Ben up and down. It was the way he stared at him. Ben couldn’t understand but he felt a strong force urge him to move closer and hug the man. But he stayed rooted to the spot.

“It’s not like you left me any choice. I only came because you sounded urgent.” He spoke with so much patience. “But it’s late, David, and I am sure your family must be worried sick. You should go home now.”

David burst into laughter. “I know they’re waiting for me. I also know of the surprise party they’ve planned for me.” He gripped his hair, feeling restless. “But that’s the more reason why I don’t want to go there.”

“If you know of this then why did you stay here?” He said, raising his voice slightly. “Everyone you love is waiting for you, to celebrate your birthday.”

He got closer and placed his hand on Ben’s cheek, caressing it. “Because I will not get my birthday wish, Ben.” He placed the other hand and cupped the boy’s cheek. “I have tried fulfilling what I had promised but my heart has failed. It has succumbed to its feelings and I don’t want anything to do with this, Ben. Call me selfish but I love you and there’s no denying that.”

Ben moved back, staring at the man angrily. “What drama is this?”

“It’s not drama. The only drama that’s going on is my relationship with Jim.” He seethed. “I do not love him. I love you!”

Ben’s brain stutters for a moment and his eyes took in more light than he expected, every part of him went on pause while his thoughts caught up.

“I have tried to love him but I have realized that I cannot force myself to. I don’t have feelings for him.” He had tears in his eyes. “This is wrong, Ben. You’ve been the one to talk all this time but listen to me today.”

Ben just stared at the man without uttering a word. He was scared.

“That day at the hotel, it’s never left my mind. I keep thinking about the what ifs.” A tear went down his cheek. “What if that day I hadn’t been at the hotel or the men’s room hadn’t been out of order? What would have happened to you? What would I have done?

I have never been so scared my whole life and it is that fear that has made me come to this conclusion.” He got closer and cupped the boy’s cheeks again. “I realized what you really meant to me. I realized that I love you more than life itself and I need to protect you.”

Ben’s eyes searched David’s for a moment and he saw something that he couldn’t explain. David’s words touched his heart and his eyes welled. A part of him wanted to be as far away from David as possible but there was something pulling him. He couldn’t move.

“And after what happened between us, the passionate night we shared, how could I not love you?” He sobbed. “I know you’re scared of what everyone’s going to do and how your brother is going to react but isn’t it better to come clean? We’re not doing anything wrong by accepting the feelings that we have for each other.”

Ben’s heart was pounding against his ribs as if trying to fulfill a thousand beats. He felt like a lump was sitting in his throat.

“Ben, I have already accepted my feelings for you and I am ready to take the next step. I cannot continue my relationship with Jim. Should I continue, it will be a sin, not a crime. A sin that we both will commit.” He added. “It is your turn now to accept your feelings and take my hand. We will tell everyone the truth, from the start.”

Ben had suddenly lost the ability of speech. He felt a sudden sickening sensation throughout his body. David got closed and he could feel the breath on his face. It was too much for him and he felt like he was being judged by something he didn’t know, but something powerful.

His mouth was trembling.

“Everyone is waiting for you at your house.” He let out a shaky breath. “Don’t keep them waiting.”

He turned and was about to leave when David grabbed his arm and pulled him back. He found himself so close to the man’s face, their noses rubbing against each other and their eyes scanning each other. Ben’s legs seemed like jelly as his knees were knocking together. If not for David holding him, he’d have been on his knees.

“I cannot continue my relationship with Jim.” He said simply. “I have had a long thought about this. Nothing will stop me from being with you. I cannot fight this and like I said, I will not continue being with someone I don’t have feelings for.”

Ben hadn’t been prepared for such intensity, though he should have been. Tonight, had the power to change his world, except, he was very scared.

“I will not let you commit a mistake, Ben. I will not let you suffer anymore. I want to make you happy, to take away your troubles.” He spoke softly as the space in between them got smaller. “I know your mother is not around anymore but I want her to know that her son is happy on earth. She deserves to see you happy. And you deserve love.”

Ben tried to move away but David moved with him in sync, their noses still rubbing. In no time, he found himself pressed against a wall with the man’s body pressed again his. He could have sworn he felt his heartbeat.

“Listen to your heart and do not ignore it.” David pleaded. “You know what I am saying is the truth. Look past your fear and reach out to me. I love you, Ben and I know you love me. Do not let fear separate us, please.”

David couldn’t control himself anymore. He began closing the space in between them slowly.

Warmth blossomed in Ben’s chest, sparks igniting as David leaned in close, lips brushing together, tentatively, almost like the first time. Ben didn’t have the power to resist even if he didn’t want to. His feelings were too strong.

Their bodies pressed together heatedly against the wall, breathing heavily as their lips pressed together. Ben could taste their shared breath, felt the thud of their combined breath, the thud of their combined heartbeat.

Ben’s lips were soft, almost silken, and pillowy against David’s. He could feel the soft tickle of Ben’s breath beneath his nose, fingers carding through his hair as they breathed each other in. They kissed for what felt like hours but was just seconds, their kiss raw, slow and passionate. Ben couldn’t imagine he was doing that but it felt so right. He didn’t want to let go. But just like anything good, their kiss ended although they were still close.

“Ben, say something.” The desperation in his voice couldn’t be masked. “You’re killing me.”

Ben’s hands were shaking so hard he could barely see them. “Why do you make me so weak, David?” His voice was shaky. “Why do you always find ways to ignite my feelings for you?” He couldn’t control his tears. “The feelings I have been running away from?” He sniveled. “You’re right, I am so scared of a lot of things. This is very complicated and that’s why I was running away from those feelings. I kept running.

I thought as time passes these feelings will fade away, but no!” He sobbed, raising his shaky hand to caress David’s cheek. “They kept on growing stronger each day. The feelings I was running away from somehow got me stronger, gave me a reason to live. I thought…” He paused and cried. “…seeing you loving someone else would erase those feelings. I did not want this to happen but it has happened.”

He moved his hand away from David’s cheek and wiped his face clean.

“But how can I take you away when I know my brother loves you?” He shook his head. “I wanna be with you but…”

“I don’t love him.” He said softly. “I wanna be with you. Jim deserves better and I know he’ll find that person soon. It’s not me because I have already found my destined partner and it’s you.”

Ben was in a dilemma.

“I love you and… I would be the happiest person to be with you but I am scared.” He took David’s hands and held. “I am so sorry if I am being a coward but you need to give me some time to think about it.”

David sighed. “I cannot promise if I am gonna stay away from you, Ben. But tonight, I’ll breakup with Jim. Forgive me for that but I have to.”

Ben didn’t say anything because he didn’t wanna push the man. “I have to go.”

“Please, stay with me.”

“I am sorry.”

David didn’t wanna let go of his hand but he eventually did. He watched as the boy he loved hurried out of the room. He wanted to follow him but he had some things to resolve and he was gonna do it in front of everyone.

Ben’s heart was beating faster and faster as he entered his father’s mansion. There was so much in his head that he felt as though it would split in half. Thinking about what David had said to him made a shudder from his feet travel to his head.

He took a deep breath and faced forward when he got the shock of his life. Not only was he not alone but Jim was lying on Elena’s lap on the couch and he was crying. He shivered when he saw that scene, but not from the cold.

‘Why are they back already?’ He thought. ‘And why is Jim crying? I am sure it’s something else. David couldn’t have broken up with him on the phone.’

His stomach churned over and he felt sick for a brief moment. He slowly walked to his brother and stood just in front of him. Both mother and son didn’t seem to have noticed his presence.

“Jim!” He spoke confidently. “What’s going on?”

Jim raised his head slowly and stared at Ben. When their eyes met, Ben’s heart broke. Jim’s eyes were blood red from crying and were swollen. Whatever had made him cry must have been serious, he thought. Elena was staring at him like she was ready to commit murder but he didn’t care.

Jim stood still and stared at him. He was no longer crying.

“Are you…”

A loud crack echoed as Ben’s neck jerked to the side. He was pulled off his feet and fell face first on the floor. It hurt like hell.

“How could you do this to me, you bitch?” Jim barked.

Ben winced as he slowly raised his head to look at his angry brother’s hate filled eyes, with blood dripping down his face from the cut on his brow.

Chapter Comments

I am happy for Ben and David, but I have no doubt Elena and Jim are going to go after him with no mercy. I hope his father steps up and makes sure Ben is not brutalized and treated like garbage because he loves David, and his brother and Elena are psychos! Ben has earned the right to be happy.

At some point, Ben is going to have to get away from these narcissistic, sociopaths and decide that he's a man and doesn't have continue to be LapDog and WhippingBoy, his woe is me is starting to get old!! Borrow a pair from somewhere, and tell your spineless dad what is going on, at least let David in, so that he can show you what "living" and loving looks like!
