Albin - 14. Chapter 14
Talking with George made him feel better.
At the next party, he told Cody about his conversation with his friend George. Cody thought it made sense and told him he would talk to his broker and set up a meeting. Albin was surprised because he didn’t know Cody had a broker. This led to a discussion of what stocks he held. Albin wasn’t fully convinced. Albin read the Professor's book, but now he had more questions. Cody told him to make an appointment with the Professor. Albin did that, he became more confused. There were so many ways, stocks, bonds, and certificates of deposit. Some can be obtained only through banks and others only through brokers.
Now Albin read the stock markets in the paper. If he were going to invest, he would be careful about the stocks he picked. Any decision he made was based on losing his investment. As long as he was working the parties, he was making money. He also made a discovery, accounting provided him with an investment rationale. He had another source besides Cody’s instructor, his accounting instructor. When they would ask him how much he had to invest, Albin was smart enough to tell them a low figure. He was doing well at the party, tall, blond, and had blue eyes among these old men.
So far the only party that Albin worked was the once-a-month party in the mountains. Cody on the other hand worked private parties as well. “I have a party next Friday and one of the men wanted to know of you are interested in working for private parties.”
“I am not interested. The once-per-month party is enough. I don’t think I have any skin that hasn’t been pinched.”
What Albin missed was the relationship he had with George when they ran together. At first, he thought maybe Cody would be the one but he quickly realized that wouldn’t work. Cody was in it for the money and therefore took chances that Albin wouldn’t take.
Over the summer break, Albin traveled to Sweden to visit his grandparents. They were surprised to see how tall he was and of course, he looked like his father. Staying in Sweden, he missed a monthly party. When he returned to the States, he learned he missed all of the excitement.
