[i] Unpublished portions of Typee: there is a total dearth of Melville manuscripts surviving for his books. The only two exceptions are Billy Budd, the corrected draft of which he completed only weeks before his death, and a mysterious, 100-or-so-page chunk of Typee recovered from a barn clearing in 1983. Melville seems to have given this section (or the complete work) to a young man he fancied whose family once owned the property. Analysis of this rare artifact includes many sections that are even more frank concerning Toby and Melville’s love than the entirely open passages he did publish.
