Poems from my Other Mind - 1. Shards

Everyone’s NaPoWriMo submissions have me stirring to write this month. I’ve only got a few, so I’ll post one at a time. I’ve got to say it isn’t easy to share them, but everything I’ve learned about life and poetry tells me that the ones that aren’t easy are the ones that need to be shared the most. They are my way of coping with situations I’ve (thankfully) left behind me. Much love to all of you.

Restless midday storm, erase
this house I built on sand,
force me out to turn and face
the bottle held in weathered hands,
the sickness I embrace.

Burst through these rotten planks impaled
by twisted spikes gone red with rust!
Streak of jagged light, exhale,
slash straight through ten years of dust,
pry out each crooked nail.

I lift my chin and silently
demand the storm to lash my face,
break me open savagely,
smash to dust my fallen grace
and shattered, I'll pour free.

I break the bottle, let it slip,
allow the whipping wind to lash,
to drag it slowly from my grip --
I smile and the green shards flash
between my parted lips.

I enjoyed this poem. Its dramatic and vivid images along with its firm and structure made me read and then re-read.

There's a lot of emotion in this poem.  I felt the despair and then the eventual triumph.  The structure only adds to the appeal.  I'm glad NaPoWriMo inspired you to share
