Beyond the Threshold provides a devastating look at what some would consider a cultural norm. I found it interesting that the Mangalsutra, a sacred necklace in Hindu culture that signifies an auspicious thread, proves, for some, to be nothing more than a chain of despair and indifference, which speaks volumes about the lack of value placed on females. Oppression comes in many forms; this story highlights but one.

A heartbreaking story about the condition many women face due to social traditions in many parts of the world. Excruciating to read at times, it's told through the eyes of a mother looking to improve the lives of her two daughters. It is a well written social commentary which will leave you with a ray of hope for oppressed people everywhere.
