Ralph: Breaking free 2. Parborough Chronicles

   (5 reviews)
Genres: General Fiction,
Sub-genres: Drama, Family Drama

Ralph has a successful web-design firm, lovely twin daughters and an ex-wife with whom he is on reasonable terms, though his parents persist in regarding him as a disappointment, disliking his choice of career and general lack of ambition. But, in the wake of his divorce, he experiences a return of feelings and ideas that he hasn’t had since his teenage years when an affair with another boy at school left an indelible mark. And now, he has to decide, does he want to be that person who hides, lashes out at any suggestion he might be gay, or does he want to break free.

After Ralph’s brief, non-speaking role in Brian: Taking Courage, I found myself wanting to learn more about what had become of him. The result is this story. It runs in parallel to Brian: Taking Courage, so Brian, Gordon, Toby and Russ all make brief appearances, but this is Ralph’s story. It helps to have read Brian: Taking Courage but you don’t have to.
Brian, Gordon, Toby and Russ will be back with the continuation of their saga with the next instalment of the series.

Another riotous romp through the Hugillverse with a varied assortment of characters gathered for the journey by esteemed author @Robert Hugill. Richly drawn characters abound, mostly delightful, with only a duo of not so pleasant characters, but they are a great source of snark and ridicule.

Robert's usual quirky sense of humour with a touch of whimsy, vivid physical descriptions of people and places, and some wonderful Hugillisms, make this a must read for any fans of well-written stories.

I really felt I tret myself with this one; it delivered so much more than I originally thought it would. Did I use tret correctly @Robert Hugill?

Response from the author:

Yes, lovely to see the word in use!

A wonderful addition to the Hugillverse, stole that from @Summerabbacat.

A story full of interesting characters, not all pleasant, that are brought together by @Robert Hugill, in his ever so delightful manner.

The weaving of seemingly divergent souls into a seamless tapestry of friendships, love, happiness, and joy.  Characters of all ages and backgrounds that seem to come alive and find ways into our hearts in the most unexpected manners.

Stop, have a nice drink, and spend some time getting know this wonderful group that you will soon adore as much as we all do.

Book 2 of Parborough Chronicles series brings the story of Ralph, divorced web design company owner, with twin daughters - a guy we met briefly in Book 1.

We are watching a deeply closeted Ralph with very conservative and bigoted parents, making his personal growth, accepting his own sexuality, finding love, becoming familiar with his own body and public nudity...

Written in unique @Robert Hugill's style, this story is once again teleporting us to charming English town, we meet interesting characters and enjoy their encounters and dialogs.

This story can be read without reading the Book 1 first, but it is such a pity not to read all Robert's stories at GA!

I wasn't sure if I wanted to read Ralph story,  as book one made him seem cowardly,  BUT, i am so glad that I did. Beautifully drawn picture of a man under pressure,  who I have seen many times in my life. The children are a delight and having 2 young girls in my life I can recognise truth when it is written,  some lovely writing that is uplifting and so warm. Envious of the writing style and often had to drag myself to bed after 1 am as it is a "just one more chapter ".

Looking for more of these men and their lives,  I certainly feel Ralph and Nolan (and Theresa comments in the background!)

Just delightful
