The Abandoned Maze - 1. Chapter 1

The Abandoned Maze

I'm stuck in a maze,
And the way out is obscured
By darkness and fog.

I cannot see much
Beyond the vague shapes of paths
Aglow from moonlight.

Which way should I go?
I'm turning this way and that,
But no path calls out.

The hedges rustle,
The paths getting narrower.
I need to choose one.

In eerie silence,
I walk alone in darkness,
My mind wandering.

Ghostly voices sound,
Resonating all round,
Filling the twilight.

Mental pictures flash
Fleetingly through my mind, like
Moving pictures out of time.

Have I been here long?
Here in this twilit dreamscape
Time has no meaning.

I almost lost hope,
Until a shining beacon
Appeared before me.

With a single look,
It beckons me to follow.
My heart's in my throat.

I don't know his face,
But his eyes reassure me,
So I follow him.

Down path after path,
I follow this starlit man,
In easy silence.

When we reach the end,
He turns to me with a smile,
His kind eyes shining.

He leans close and says,
"I'll see you again someday."

Also, I am aware that one of them isn't a true haiku as it is 5-7-7, rather than 5-7-5.

I don't know which one is more scary, the mazes of your mind or the ones you find that have been planted. This definitely had a sort of sense of desperation to it. Nicely done.

I've never been in a maze that's been planted, so I couldn't tell you which one is scarier, but I'm glad you liked the poem. :) I'm glad the feelings I was trying to invoke came out.

An interesting use of form: retaining the syllable count while taking the form out of the nature context in Japanese haiku. I've never actually seen a linked sequence of haiku before. I'll want to think more about that idea. Inventive!
