Review of Gay Themed Movie "Were the World Mine"

If I keep watching more gay movies, I might just end up making my own blog for reviewing these, but as for now, I will just write a review whenever I feel like it:

"Were the World Mine" was a movie made in 2008, so it is quite recent, but I did not hear about it until I began looking into a list of recommended gay themed movies.

First off let me get this off my chest, I hate Shakespeare adaptations in modern times, especially after watching the wreck that is "Private Romeo" (a gay themed movie that could have done so much more with the material). I went into this movie without high expectations despite its high recommendation and its interesting plot point.

This film is loosely based on "A Midsummer Nights' Dream", one of my personal favorites of Shakespeare along with Henry IV and Hamlet.

I was completely surprised by the high quality of the acting, choreography, dance numbers, and music (It's like Glee with a better plot).

The story is not merely about Timothy, a gay teenage boy, having the ability to turn people gay as the description may tell, but there is a lot of story and characters, just like a Shakespearean play. The subplot involving the mother dealing with her gay teenage son is intriguing and deals with a lot of heart wrenching issues about the fallout of coming out, not merely from the standpoint of the gay kid, but the family as well. There are a lot of points to go over from the guy Timothy wants to be with, who he had to release for his own happiness rather than Tim's, to a real "fairy", who is the school's English teacher (she's really interesting, I wouldn't even be surprised if she's the actual Titania) There's the story of a closeted teenage boy, who does not have the will to come out to express his love, which turns out to be a major plot point near the ending.

Also, with all the stories and plots, I was completely rolling on the floor with the hard ass rugby coach turned gay doting lover for the Principal of the school after getting sprayed by the gay potion. You got to watch it to believe :P

The theme of the story is a simple fact, "accept the world, yourself, and others", I think the essential fact of the story is that being gay is a fact; even if you can change the world to suit your wants, you cannot change the world to suit your needs. No matter how many people can be changed into what you want them to be, you will never get the world that you dream of in either case.

This story is as much a social commentary for gay rights' activists or homophobics in their eternal crusade for us and against us. The world will never be as we want it to be, nor the world that they want based on their view. We must all come to a common understanding of each other and the world; it is not tolerance or suppression of our or their desires that will achieve this, but a clarity that from each other's dreams that we find a common future together.

I will have to deduct a point though, because it is a teenage angst movie, which we have all seen before in movies like "Beautiful thing" and "Get Real", but I think the presentation and the message were fabulous!

I rate this 9/10

Hulu has it now for free with commercials:

I recommend this movie for fans of Glee, especially if you want to watch a musical with an interesting plot and premise. I am not a big fan of Glee, but I did enjoy this musical spectacular.

I might consider watching "Judas' Kiss" next, so if I do write a gay themed movie review I will consider that one.

I too love this movie. Do "From Beginning to End". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1440741/

I have it on my Amazon Instant Videos :D

It's a great movie as well and I don't care if they're brothers, or half brothers. Love is love.

I might consider it

A bit too "musical" for me if I remember correctly. Never watched Glee for the same reason.
