Classic Author Excerpt: The Union of Darkness and Light by Lugh

Well, it's Wednesday. Did you check out this month's Classic Author feature on Monday, or download your copy of the graphic for your signature? It's definitely an unusual little tale and has an ending I don't think you'll expect. Well, if you read Lugh's stories, you probably already know that the story won't go like you think it will and the ending is never far from assured. But let's talk about another part of the story, because there's a hint in the beginning that just captures the attention and hooks you, and that's the excerpt I chose.

Zachariah felt his skin tingle and he knew he would stand between the darkness and the light at some time in his future. He leaned his head on the pole and breathed the words in and out as he spoke them, "Dark and light, day and night." Zachariah trembled as this new realization did make him want certain things in his life and one of those things happened to be Darkness and Light. He wanted to bask in them both.

So strong was the need then that he whimpered, clinging to the fence, like some caged animal bound indeed to one side while freedom and beauty waited for him on the other side. His hands wrapped themselves so tightly around the chain-link he did not feel the tiny steel barbs as they pierced his palms and dug their way down toward the bone. No one saw the droplets of blood as they splashed the bare earth along with the tears which were now freely falling, rolling down the injured hands.

He wept in silence.

The teacher approached each child along the fence to determine if they had learned their lesson and upon reaching Zachariah she muttered, "Bloody hell," under her breath.

"What have you been out here doing Zach?"

"My hands hurt Miss."

"I can imagine they do. Guess we should get you down to the nurses' station for a bit of a look-see?"

"Might make Mum feel better considering all the other notes she gets about me."

"All right then. I'll just have to get you an escort." The teacher pulled his hands loose and saw the wounds were not deep, nor deadly, so she waved the nearest young lady over she saw, a fifth grader by the name of Rachael.

"He needs to see the nurse. Do you think you can take him there?"

Rachael looked over to where Deus was waiting on her.

"Your friend can walk too, but only if it will get him there quickly."

Together they walked down the hall: Darkness, then Light, then Zach.

Worth the read, Val. Interesting and not the usual fare. Personally, I would have preferred Rachel to meet an untimely demise but the ending works anyway. :P
