Iodine can be used on scratches, but won't help you if you are a knight with a flesh wound.

Potassium iodine pills are used to treat short-term radiation exposure by preventing fallout uptake by the thyroid. They are a necessity in any fallout shelter.

When I was young, our go to antiseptic was mercurochrome (which was banned by the FDA in1998), but my aunt's family always used tincture of iodine.

Actually, it's potassium iodide (KI), which is used to protect the thyroid from radioactive Iodine. Not all radiation releases have radioactive iodine; as an example, dirty bombs do not.

Yes, we had mecurochrome also. It was one of a long list of 'oh, it's fine' treatments which had been grandfathered by the FDA.
