This word originates from the Latin pietas, meaning piety or compassion. It was originally a small donation to religious orders.

And now that I'm retired, I get my retirement pittance every month and attempt to stretch it to pay my bills.

Whenever I hear the word, I think of this powerful and meaningful song and video. Usually played a lot around Nov. 11 for Remembrance Day in Canada.
