Vexillology is a word combining elements of the Latin vexillum (a Roman military standard) with the Greek –logia (study).

US vexillologist Whitney Smith coined the term in the late 1950s.

He used it to describe the scientific study of flags – their types, forms, history, symbolism and functions – and the development of a body of related knowledge, theories and principles.

However, its meaning has since expanded to include any interest in flags more generally.

By extension, a student of flags is a vexillologist.

The art of flag design is vexillography, while a flag designer is a vexillographer.

Because there isn't a groan emoji I apologize in advance. Trying to remember which flag belongs with which country can be very vexing.

Dare I go for another flag joke? OK. What's the best thing about Switzerland? I'm not sure but their flag is a big plus.

More seriously, I loved the graphic of national flags and the "coexist" slogan. It is a very appropriate reminder when we have tension in various places around the world. Vexillology  is the study of all flags, not just national flags, and in the context of "coexist" our rainbow flag is very significant, along with the flags of various first nations' peoples.

When I first saw this word I thought: Ahh... Vexology! The study of things that vex people, like noisy barking dogs and raccoon raiders would be useful and practical...  wait, that ain't it.

I pictured  a rather large sign, with the flashing words, Bibbidi-Bobbidi- Boo!!!

Even if you won't ,I'll admit it, this one took me back over sixty years. Plus, I learned a new word, 'vexillology', thanks @Myr !

No comment on vexillology would be appropriate than the "only in America" misuse of the national flag of Switzerland with the internationally recognized flag for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
