Ephemeral comes from New Latin ephemerus, which comes from Ancient Greek ἐφήμερος (ephḗmeros), the more common form of ἐφημέριος (ephēmérios, “of, for, or during the day, living or lasting but for a day, short-lived, temporary”), from ἐπί (epí, “on”) + ἡμέρα (hēméra, “day”) 

The word "ephemeral" was first used in English in the late 1500s. The earliest known use of the word is in 1576, in a translation by Thomas Newton, a translator and Church of England clergyman.

Fashions are thankfully ephemeral, otherwise we'd still be stuck with bellbottoms.

Though I don't wear them anymore, I still have bellbottoms in my wardrobe. Neru jackets too. (Shudder)

I got rid of my leisure suits long ago.
