One of my turns

So I've been doing a lot of thinking, and I've come to the following conclusions.......Bodega Bay is almost finished. I'm not sure how many chapters it has left, but it's not more than 5. Ok, that's not one of the conclusions...I knew that already. The first conclusion is this......I'm devoting all of my energy to Staking My Claim once Bodega Bay is finished, then I'm going to start something new that's definitely going to be unlike anything you've ever read from me(btw, that's the other conclusion).

I admit I'm a little nervous about the new project, but it's important to me as a writer that I at least try. I have a story in me that needs to be told, and I'm going to drive myself nuts thinking about it night after night after night if I don't get it all out. The thing is, there might not be any sex at all in this story. The other thing is, and this is the part that's making me nervous, the main character is going to be in his early 60's.

I have absolutely no idea how to approach this yet, but I also had no idea how to approach Obligation To Myself, My Jump Off and Bodega Bay. The only thing I can think to do is have confidence in myself as a writer and work my hardest to pound out the best story I can. I feel like no matter what happens, I can only grow as an author and maybe I can pick up some new readers along the way. It won't be the feel good teenage drama like Staking My Claim and My Jump Off were, and it won't be loaded with lots of steamy sex and pot smoking, either. I don't want to give too much away, but I will say this.....it's going to have a solid plot and a realistic time line. I won't drag it out for a gazzilion chapters, but I won't be in a rush to finish it either. I guess what I'm hoping is that people will be willing to give it a chance once I release it.

In other news, I have to admit that I'm completely shocked and humbled to be nominated for so many categories in this years GA Awards. One of the biggest honors for me is to be nominated in the same category as Dom Luka, dkstories and Little BuddhaTW. Those are my 3 favorite authors, and just to have my name in the mix with them is amazing. I don't even care if I win or not, because I already feel like I've won something when I see my story along side LB's, Dom's and DK's. I really mean it when I say that I've learned by reading these guys and trying to soak up their styles.

Well that's about it. I just wanted to post and let my readers know what I have planned in the near future.

Kisses

Nick

Oh Nick, you do deserve all the nominations. Congratulations :2thumbs: , and I hope you win many of them.

I say go for it, try a new style. No sex - no problem. As long as there are true emotions and characters, I am sure the readers will love the story.

Good luck  ,

Michael.

Speaking as an author who doesn't put sex into his stories, but people still seem to like them, I don't think you'll have a problem.

You're building up a reputation as a good solid author. As long as the story is good (and I have no doubts it will be), then people will read it. If it pushes your boundaries as an author, than don't worry about that -- I'm going through the same with my current novel and I'm learning from it.

As for the nominations -- don't put yourself down. A degree of modesty is nice, but don't fall for false modesty. You are a very promising author... and the only reason I'm not saying you're a good author is because I don't want to give you a swollen head :D

As long as you're happy writing, you WILL find people happy reading what you write. It will never be everyone, so don't even try. Write what you want -- that will always give the best results.

Pretty much what Graeme said in his 2nd, 3rd and 4th paragraphs, really. My fault for getting here so late ;)

Hey, Nick, you have talent for story writing and for poetry, so don't second guess yourself. You've gotten comments from varied readers who've really liked what you write.

To me, story writing is largely about the characters, and that means their personalities and their relationships. There doesn't have to be sex directly in a story to tell you about those characters' feelings and sex lives. On the other hand, if it's there in the story, it needs to be there for a good reason to serve the story, to show something important, story-wise, to the readers. It's the "less is more" rule: let the readers use their imaginations to fill in the blanks. That's the reason given for bikinis and speedos, too, lol.

On writing an older character, or another character type, when you aren't that type or that age, it's a matter of writing what you know, what you've seen about that kind of person. I'm nowhere near my grandmother's age (and a lot of other differences) but I know what she's like, on almost anything. I'm not a teen, but I know what the teens I know are like and what my friends and I were like as teens, albeit filtered through my current self. Imagine yourself as that character, inside that character. Pretend. And use what you know of that type of person. It'll probably come easier than you think. -- Being a teen today is way different than when I was a teen, but a lot of the feelings and situations are still the same, just by being human. The same goes for being an adult: When I was 18, I never would've expected my life to have some of the changes I've had. I imagined a very different "me" then than I turned out to be. But I am still very much like that younger "me," despite all the changes. I'm basically the same guy as I was; but a "me" who's added or changed a lot onto that original self.

Bottom line: Imagine; pretend; get in character; know who he/she is and what he/she is like and what his/her history has been. -- Look, you'll do fine. You've just amped up the volume on the imagination.

Enjoy writing... geezer-boy. ;)

When it comes to writing, I don't write "gay" stories. I write stories in which some characters may or may not be gay. I would hope that anyone, regardless of gender or orientation could read one of my stories.

Sex in a story for the sake of sex doesn't make a good story. The traditional elements make a good story: characterization, scene, plot, setting, craft and so on. NO- I'm not anti-sex. Sex occassionally does belong in a story but there's a big difference in doing a play-by-play and a more subtle approach which leaves the messy details up to the readers imagination.

Too many writers of "gay-fiction" have sex driving the plot rather than being a logical part of it. Nifty is full of that sort of writing but how much of it do you really remember two weeks after reading it?

Just my 2 cents,

Nick and I chatted the other day about this new story idea of his. I sent him an email today encouraging him to try something different. Write a story without explicit sex. I told him there are stories out there that have a hint of sex in it, 'The Scrolls of Icaria', by Jamie. And stories without it, like Graeme's stories, just to mention a couple.

We even chatted about it some today:

Nickolasjames8: I just emailed you the first chapter of my new story

TalonRider1: k, it should be here anytime then

Nickolasjames8: :)

Nickolasjames8: It might be a little dark

TalonRider1: something a little different then

Nickolasjames8: I want you to see it first because I wrote it from the perspective of a 64 year old man

TalonRider1: lol thanks a lot

Nickolasjames8: no not that..lol

TalonRider1: LOL

Nickolasjames8: just that I've never done it before

Nickolasjames8: and I want your honest opinion

TalonRider1: i know what you meant.

Nickolasjames8: lol

TalonRider1: i just had to pull your chain a little

I couldn't resist the age thing with him.

Is it a little dark? Yes, but then again life isn't always a bed of roses. Is it emotional? Yes, I didn't have dry eye's by the time I got to the end of the first chapter. Am I giving anything away? No, I would not do that.

The story does have potential and I don't think anyone will be disappointed in it.
