David Cornwall, known to readers as John Le Carre, has died.

One of those authors with the gift, his novels set a new bar for the spy-thriller genre.

He was my Dad’s favourite author - he read every book as it came out

le Carré / Cornwell attributed his success to Ian Fleming, saying the Bond books whetted the public appetite for spy stories. This underplays the immense influence his writing has had on the whole spy genre but the real reason, as ever, is good stories well written
