Looking for a Story/Author I read in 2000

Around 2000, I was reading a series that involved a teen that moved to Pacific Palisades, gets a boyfriend, goes surfing, joins a band with other gay friends and the stories often "linked" songs into the story narrative. I remember at one point being able to click on links to even listen to the music. The series went on and at some point it even started getting a little science fictiony in the manner they connected with each other.  I believe the author lived near San Francisco at that time.

I'd really like to find the series to read again but just cant figure where to go. I even tried looking at Nifty but had no luck.
