Fennrin is a shadowforger, a type of az-ari who have mastery over shadows. But all it's ever brought him is misery. People are afraid of the power that he himself barely understands, seeing his shadows as omens of bad luck and death. Fennrin's life takes a turn when he is approached by Ainreth, a lightweaver and famous general, asking him to come with him to the royal court to be trained. Thrust into a world of politics, Fennrin quickly learns how powerful he could become, while starting to fall for Ainreth. However, unwelcome feelings are only the start of his problems as the neighboring, tyrannical monarchy is preparing for war.

Ainreth hated going out on missions. Nothing interesting ever happened, leaving him with boredom, dirty clothes, and far too few distractions for comfort. This particular instance was especially irritating, though, because he was stationed near the end of the border wall. There were miles upon miles of flat land and fields of grass. No sane Orinovan spy or soldier would dare try to cross here, with no forests or mountains to hide them. And sure, he sometimes doubted the sanity of Orinovo's

Thank you so much ❤️

Aw, I'm so glad you liked it. Maybe I'll write a sequel at some point, but my current headcanon is they probably end up adopting a gaggle of street urchins and upon death Torryn becomes a star like that poem eludes and they live in the sky forevermore 😊 Thanks for your vote!

Lalianus was so excited to see a wedding. He got the impression that a royal wedding was different to a peasant wedding, though he had nothing to compare this one to, so that wasn't useful. He would just have to go to a peasant wedding later, too. There was so much food, and flowers decorating everything, and everyone was wearing prettier clothes than usual. Torry himself was wearing a very nice white tunic and a purple vest with golden patterns sewn into it, and Lalianus loved running his

Torryn wasn't sure what to expect from meeting the literal sun and moon, but he agreed to Lali's request immediately. Anything he wanted, anything he needed, Torryn would do it. He was however privately incredibly intimidated, and also mildly terrified. He'd heard jokes about intimidating in-laws from the peasants, and this felt like a whole different level of it. What could be more nerve-wracking than meeting deities, who would also become his family, sort of, were Torryn to marry Lal

Lalianus studied the ornate lantern, sighing heavily as he put it in front of Asha's gravestone. Leaning down, he reached into the lantern to the thick candle within, squeezing the wick and using his starlight to set it on fire. Lalianus watched the little flame dance for a moment before closing the little glass door, protecting the fire from the wind. He sniffed as he rose up, drawing his wings in. Torryn put his arms around him, and Lalianus leaned back against him, pressing his head

Oh absolutely, now I wanna write a sequel 😁

"Torry!" Lalianus cried. His human was there, right in front of him, fighting several guards at once. Their swords clanged as Torryn blocked and attacked with expert movements, and a murderous glint in his eye that Lalianus had not seen before. It was similar to when he'd threatened Yarli over Venneth, but this was different. More savage, more intent on killing then simply threatening. Lalianus had thought Torryn being resolute and menacing had been attractive back in Gharrim. He

Lalianus already felt weaker, and it had been about a day. He needed natural light on his scales, but there wasn't even a sliver of it here. He was so tired, and after having his scale and stardust stolen, he simply had no remaining strength to fight back. He wasn't going to win this fight, no matter what he did. And so instead, Lalianus lay on the floor in defeat, his cheek still raw. Healing a human injury was so easy for him, yet he couldn't fix his skin from hurting. Somehow healin

Oh he is already in that form :0 And yes, they presume that they can use the stardust for healing

Kaya was much more talkative than Azri, it turned out. At the start, Torryn hadn't been happy about that. Between all the worry about Lalianus and rage that someone dared steal him away, he hadn't been in the mood to talk. But Kaya hadn't let up, and eventually Torryn had engaged. And it was a nice distraction from the anxiety crushing his lungs. They were making progress, having crossed the border before the sun was high in the sky, but they were painfully slow to Torryn, anyway. His

Lalianus flinched as the door to his cell opened, curling up more in his corner, shaking at what might happen. He hadn't moved for hours, aside from trying and failing to take off the strap holding his maw closed. It was on too tightly. "Uh. H-hello, divine," came a trembling high-pitched voice. Despite his fear, Lalianus did look up just enough to see a young woman, her head down. He couldn't see any weapons on her, her blue dress relatively simple, though there was still gold th

Torryn paced around, pulling at his hair, losing his mind. He wanted to jump on a horse and ride to Kharea this instant. He had no doubts that was where those people were talking his Lali. But he knew he couldn't. He had to wait for Venn's people to show up. His brother apparently had a sizeable group of special operatives at his disposal, most of which were spies, and he wanted to send a couple to rescue Lalianus. Torryn wasn't surprised at the fact that they existed—he'd had spies as

Lalianus was absolutely terrified, but he refused to show it. He wouldn't cry like he had when those bandits had attacked him and Torryn. He'd stay brave and not show weakness to these thugs. They'd dragged him into a covered wagon and tied him down into it so he couldn't escape, not even move his tail. That was smart on their part because Lalianus was more than ready to smack them with it, but it made escape impossible. He'd been hoping he could overwhelm them at a good time and fly a

The more fields they healed of the blight, the more energy Lalianus seemed to have. He jumped around, his tail swishing, shining his starlight around the place before calling to Torryn to jump back on his back and continued flying on. Sometimes he didn't even bother letting Torryn dismount, just bringing him for the healing and flying before properly explaining anything. Venneth had sent out people to tell the farmers not to rip out anymore of the infected crops just to make certain th

It had been two weeks. Nothing had worked so far. Lalianus kept thinking Torry would find the right mix of herbs that would save the crops, and he went around looking for them for him, sometimes with him, sometimes only with a drawing of what he was looking for in his claw. But so far, they'd not been successful in making a difference as far as the star could tell. It made him so very sad. Plants were dying, people might go hungry, and he, a star, was helpless. He was meant to be

With a heart so heavy, Venneth waited for Yarli's guards to bring the king to him. He was seated in one of the rooms dedicated to negotiations, this being the smallest of the ones they'd used over the years. And used it they had. Venneth sighed sadly as he leaned on the table, gazing at the bench in the far corner of the room he and Yarlimar had used. It was difficult to find a single corner of this castle without thinking of Yarlimar and the things they'd done. Venneth sighed aga

Lalianus watched Torry mixing ingredients into a paste in a bowl, the star's head titled. He had Torryn in his lap, holding him tight from behind, so he could see the whole process closely. He was utterly fascinated that mixing plants and powders together could somehow help other plants, and he didn't understand at all how humanity had figured that out in the first place. Humans were so fascinating. Lalianus sniffed the bowl, wrinkling his nose at the bitter smell. He didn't like

The next morning, Torryn went on horseback with his brother to assess the situation in person. He of course wanted to help his brother, but there was another reason—Torryn knew much more about farmwork than Venneth or his advisors, and the peasants had families to take care of that they couldn't just abandon to travel the kingdom. Torryn looked up, trying to find Lali above them. The star had insisted on coming with them, healing people as he went, catching up with them every once in a whil

Damn you guessed it right off, good job, it takes these idiots a bit 😁 (Lalique is really cute)

Torryn wiped his sweaty forehead, taking a break from plowing the field to look out on the whole of it. The sun was close to setting now, hanging above the horizon, casting long shadows. Soon he would be reunited with Lali again. He couldn't wait. It had been two months or so since they'd returned from Gharrim. Two months since Monari had agreed to provide the other country with enough food to make up for this territory. It had only made sense to help with it. Torryn knew how to work t
