    Chapter 5

Wise words, and definitely what Ain needs too. He needs to clean up his act first
  2. Fennrin frowned in concentration, shrinking the shadow of the pencil on the table in front of him, watching it lift off the wooden surface slowly, flying up further as he made the shadow smaller and smaller until it was levitating right in front of his face before he started making the shadow gradually bigger, letting it gently settle on the table again. He'd been training how to modify shadows for a week now, among other things. He had wanted to start training sword fighting with Ainreth,

    Chapter 6

That would have been really cute, now I kinda wanna add an extra epilogue for that to book 3
  7. Fennrin had no idea what to make of Ainreth. On one hand, the man seemed rather rude to the people around him, and on the other, he seemed to care a whole lot. It made no sense to him. The way Ainreth treated Petre was a perfect example of this. He didn't remember the family name of his lieutenant, and yet he treated them in such a generally positive way. Fennrin didn't get it at all. It was all just very strange. But he supposed it didn't really matter. As long as Ainreth didn't treat
  8. Despite his sour mood about having to have been in the presence of Daryan Varilik, Ainreth was giddy about the rest of the day because now he got to spend time with Fenn. Fennrin said he wanted to look at those books about shadowforgers, which wouldn't have been an activity Ain would have chosen—more interested in taking Fenn to an inn, maybe getting something for lunch—but honestly, he didn't care that much as long as Fenn was present. Ain couldn't help but sneak glances at him whenever th

    Chapter 4

If you mean related by blood, then no, but there is definitely history...

    Chapter 4

It will become apparent why Ain doesn't like him, don't worry 🫠
  11. Fennrin kept his head down as they entered the palace. If he had felt out of place before, now that feeling was on a different level. He tried not to think about this much, though, as it certainly didn't help him feel less anxious. The thought of soon meeting one of the leaders of Lys-Akkaria made his insides twist in on themselves. How could he possibly prepare for that, even if he had been given time? Fennrin wasn't even certain if whatever first impression he made on the Bulwark would me

    Chapter 3

Glad to hear it, there's plenty more coming ☺️
  13. For some reason, Fennrin hadn't expected Ainreth to have come here using a carriage, but when he thought about it more, it made sense. If Ainreth had come here for him specifically, then a carriage would work better than alternatives. However, that didn't mean Fennrin was too happy about this. He hadn't ridden in a carriage since his parents had disowned him, and anything reminding him of his old life always put him in a foul mood. That said, this carriage was much more luxurious than any h
  14. Fennrin hated a lot about his miserable life, but especially the part where he was forced to wait for his meager pay. His employer, Ankyr Tyr-Pentar, always did this, forcing Fennrin to practically beg for the few coins he got each week, as if he didn't more than earn them. As if using his power to make shadow puppets for the man every day, four hours and hours wasn't enough to get him enough money to be able to afford enough food to not go to bed hungry. He'd seen how much money each of th

    Epilogue

Thank you! Decided to go with that
  17. Ainreth hated going out on missions. Nothing interesting ever happened, leaving him with boredom, dirty clothes, and far too few distractions for comfort. This particular instance was especially irritating, though, because he was stationed near the end of the border wall. There were miles upon miles of flat land and fields of grass. No sane Orinovan spy or soldier would dare try to cross here, with no forests or mountains to hide them. And sure, he sometimes doubted the sanity of Orinovo's
  18. Fennrin is a shadowforger, a type of az-ari who have mastery over shadows. But all it's ever brought him is misery. People are afraid of the power that he himself barely understands, seeing his shadows as omens of bad luck and death. Fennrin's life takes a turn when he is approached by Ainreth, a lightweaver and famous general, asking him to come with him to the royal court to be trained. Thrust into a world of politics, Fennrin quickly learns how powerful he could become, while starting to fall for Ainreth. However, unwelcome feelings are only the start of his problems as the neighboring, tyrannical monarchy is preparing for war.

    Epilogue

Aw, I'm so glad you liked it. Maybe I'll write a sequel at some point, but my current headcanon is they probably end up adopting a gaggle of street urchins and upon death Torryn becomes a star like that poem eludes and they live in the sky forevermore 😊 Thanks for your vote!

    Epilogue

Lalianus was so excited to see a wedding. He got the impression that a royal wedding was different to a peasant wedding, though he had nothing to compare this one to, so that wasn't useful. He would just have to go to a peasant wedding later, too. There was so much food, and flowers decorating everything, and everyone was wearing prettier clothes than usual. Torry himself was wearing a very nice white tunic and a purple vest with golden patterns sewn into it, and Lalianus loved running his

    Chapter 30

Torryn wasn't sure what to expect from meeting the literal sun and moon, but he agreed to Lali's request immediately. Anything he wanted, anything he needed, Torryn would do it. He was however privately incredibly intimidated, and also mildly terrified. He'd heard jokes about intimidating in-laws from the peasants, and this felt like a whole different level of it. What could be more nerve-wracking than meeting deities, who would also become his family, sort of, were Torryn to marry Lal

    Chapter 29

Lalianus studied the ornate lantern, sighing heavily as he put it in front of Asha's gravestone. Leaning down, he reached into the lantern to the thick candle within, squeezing the wick and using his starlight to set it on fire. Lalianus watched the little flame dance for a moment before closing the little glass door, protecting the fire from the wind. He sniffed as he rose up, drawing his wings in. Torryn put his arms around him, and Lalianus leaned back against him, pressing his head

    Chapter 28

"Torry!" Lalianus cried. His human was there, right in front of him, fighting several guards at once. Their swords clanged as Torryn blocked and attacked with expert movements, and a murderous glint in his eye that Lalianus had not seen before. It was similar to when he'd threatened Yarli over Venneth, but this was different. More savage, more intent on killing then simply threatening. Lalianus had thought Torryn being resolute and menacing had been attractive back in Gharrim. He
