Sorry all, running late today, so let's get right to today's story review!
Days Like This
by Drew Payne
Reviewer: Timothy M
Status: Complete
Word Count: 98,599
Some authors on GA attract attention from many readers the moment they start publishing a story. Others sneak up on us, quietly putting out a short story here and a longer tale there, until one of them gets noticed, often acquiring a small group of dedicated fans who like the author’s style. It’s always rewarding to be a reader who happens to stumble across one of those unassuming writers and subsequently watch them blossom due to the feedback and praise from their audience. I know many people agree this is one of the huge strengths of the site.
Drew Payne joined GA a little over ten years ago and uploaded his first story almost exactly three years ago. I came across his first multi-chapter story about six months later, and I was soon caught up in his writing. His stories depict the struggles of everyday life, and while they can contain sadness and anguish, they always have a kernel of hope or redemption. The main characters may face adversity, but they try to stay true to themselves and what they feel is right.
Days Like This is the story of Simon who is sixteen and knows he is gay, but isn’t quite sure how to deal with this. Especially when faced with the unthinking bigotry of his surroundings, mainly his father and other students at his college. At the start of the story he has no one to ask for advice or share his interests with, and he tends to worry about how other people see him. But he is also sensible and resists the pressure from his surroundings, if his gut feelings do not agree. I particularly like his refusal to accept the stereotyping of gay people, and his mother’s moody behavior and pessimism.
The story follows Simon over four weeks as he, in Drew’s words, “navigates the difficult journey of his coming out.” He meets several new people, who have important roles to play, and my favorite is Nicky. When you have read the story, please tell me who you like best.

The Cockney Canuck
by Dodger
Reviewer: Timothy M.
Status: Incomplete
Word Count: 883,024
How to review a story which was begun more than five years ago, is the third longest on GA, with 148 chapters, 222 devoted followers and, while incomplete, is still going strong? I admire Dodger immensely for persevering and holding us captive year after year, waiting to find out which new calamity will befall Robbie, the protagonist. He is the Cockney Canuck of the title, a London lad relocating to Canada, when his mother dies.
He is portrayed realistically, with all the raging hormones, moody temper and stubborn behavior to be expected from a distraught, emotional teen. But Robbie also has a strong sense of right and wrong and how to annoy the idiots and bigots he encounters. His choices are not always smart, but somehow we understand why he reacts the way he does, and I think most readers have stayed loyal supporters of Robbie. This is a credit to Dodgers’ writing skills, because there’s plenty of ranting, hair tearing, yelling, and even crying from readers riding the CC rollercoaster.
There are some dark spots (e.g. sexual abuse, violence, suicide thoughts) along the way, but mostly the distress we feel for Robbie is caused by the challenges of a gay teen trying to navigate in a small town community, where he is the new kid in school trying to make friends, as well as fit into his new family. Sometimes he is his own worst enemy, but other times we feel proud of him for his loyalty to his friends and the way he wants to comfort hurt people. Robbie needs and craves love, and mostly I think he has success in finding people capable of mutual caring.
Why not join the Cockney Canuck Club and find out for yourself how Robbie’s story ends? We don’t know yet, but I have no doubt it will be epic.

Howdy all! Steve asked me to take over this week. I'm still a little rusty at doing the weekly wrap up, but let's see what we had going on this past week. Not going to do a huge intro though, because it's been a big week here with my little man joining many others in starting school this week (yes, he's already 3 years old and starting preschool!). And of course, after finally getting to be around other kids, my little man has caught a cold and wants snuggles with his mama. So let's take a look at what happened this week.
This week was the classic feature and Cia joined us for both Monday and Wednesday:
Then on Thursday, we took a look back at a previous anthology entry. Don't forget your anthol entries are due by October 31st!
Did you miss any of Myr's words of the day this week? If so, check them out below!

Theme: Bridges
Sometimes going to a new school in a new city isn't the break that you were hoping for.
Reader Comments:
KayDeeMac: What a wonderful story. I am sure it resonates truths in many families where siblings are faced with accepting different sexualities within their family.
Headstall: There is a real lesson here about acceptance and respect... and friendship can be found in the weirdest of circumstances. Besides that, this was quite entertaining.
Valkyrie: I loved seeing how everything unfolded and how their friendship develops throughout the story. I also liked how this is a different take on the typical teen drama we see here.

Theme: Shadows
Jason Whitlock has a job to do. He needs to serve some papers, so he's traveling to a small island on Lake Superior to accomplish this task.
Things pop up that make him start thinking about his life, who he really is, and what it means.
Reader Comments:
northie: What a fascinating character study contained within a story which drip-fed information only as and when the author wanted it to be known.
chris191070: Thanks for a great story. It had plenty of twists to it
Valkyrie: I found this story riveting. I love the slow reveal of information
Time for another review! This time though, @Timothy M. is going to introduce today's review. Here's what Timothy has to say:
In memory of Wayne, aka comicfan, the review team has decided to re-feature @Puppilull's review from 2019. Wayne was not only our Prompt guru, he wrote many short stories, and several multi-chapter tales too. The one reviewed below is among his most popular, together with Accidents Happen.
The Strange Life of Jonas Marks
comicfan
Reviewer: Puppilull
Starus: Complete
Word Count: 57,189
Some jobs require a bit more of you. Though I bet you’ve never had a job quite like the one Jonas Marks manages to snag for himself: assistant in the hub of an operation that traverses the entire universe and possibly quite a few other realms.
Jonas Marks’ quite ordinary life gets overturned when he is tossed out of his home by his father. Why? Oh, he happens to be gay and that is unacceptable to his useless excuse of a father. So, within days of graduating, our hero finds himself on the streets, with no home, no job and no way to support himself. Thankfully, he has a great friend who invites him to stay with her and her family.
Job hunting turns out to be difficult, but then he gets the chance he’s been waiting for. The name for his new place of work, the Fantasy Office in the fancy department store Kroger’s, should perhaps set off a few alarm bells. Adding to this, his new boss, Mr. Openseter, is somewhat scaly. However, no one else seems to notice.
However, beggars can’t be choosers. Reassured by the fact that the rest of the staff seem to accept Openseter’s unusual appearance, Jonas rolls up his sleeves and gets to work. He gets busy fulfilling other people’s fantasies and desires for rare items as well as unusual partners, one more magical than the next. Many items are things I certainly wished were real. A bowl automatically filling with pudding or a ring that takes you where you want to go? A talking sword…? Or the most coveted by us readers – a fantastic cleaning device.
This story can at times come across as an acid dream, but just as you think it’s going too far and your suspension of disbelief is threatening to rip at the seams, comicfan reigns us back in and puts a relatable and quite down to earth spin on events once more. He captures Jonas’ feelings of loneliness and insecurity but also shows us how he is surrounded by people who care for him and love him. Being mistreated by his father has given Jonas the ability to remain open and not judge. Maybe that’s why he can see all people and creatures for who they are and not be misled by appearance or misdirection. A capability that comes in handy when he meets his more exotic clients. Also, something worth thinking about after reading. How prepared are you to look past the exterior of others?
Of course, there is a love story snuck into this wonderful weirdness. But I’ll let you all discover that little gem all on your own. I promise you won’t feel blue about it. Or well, when I think about it…

Nope, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you, you've got me to finish out the week, and the month. I'm not as good as Steve with the intro's, so let's just get right into it. We only had a couple of blogs this week, so since this will be a quick wrap up, I'll just do a quick reminder to start it out.
If you're interested in writing for the next anthology, you have 3 months left to get your story written and to the proof team. The deadline for the fall anthology is October 31st and you have lots of themes to choose from. You can find the list of themes at the bottom of this blog post.
For our first blog post of the week, Cia joined us with July's CSR Discussion.
For our second and last post of the week, Steve reposted a couple of Comicfan's old prompts. Don't forget to let us know what your favorite Comicfan prompt was so that we can re-feature it in the future!
Now, what were Myr's words of the day for this week! And which one did you find most interesting?

This is not a blog post that I thought I'd ever have to make, and it pains me greatly to write it now, so please bear with me.
It is with a saddened heart that I must announce the passing of my dear friend, and fellow author, Wayne, aka @comicfan
He's gone by many titles on GA over the years, though most of you may know him as the "prompt guru" who posted prompts every Friday to help get the writing juices flowing. Wayne was definitely one of a kind, and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Whether you'd known him for years, or barely met him, he would always have a kind word to say.
Gay Authors will definitely not be the same without him. He was a friend to everyone and he touched many people with his words, whether just in passing or in his stories. He had the biggest heart of anyone I know. If you were having a rough time, he was there, and if you were part of his card list, you might get a postcard or a card in the mail, just letting you know you weren't alone and that he was thinking of you.
I truly never met anyone like him, and I will forever miss my friend.
For the remainder of the week, all staff blogs will be put on pause as we remember this wonderful person who left the world far to soon.
Please feel free to share your memories of Wayne in the comments.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. We had a blast here at my house, celebrating our little mans 3rd birthday! To start you week off, we have this great review for you to check out. Enjoy!
Trophy Cub
Grumpy Bear
Reviwer: Chris191070

This isn't your normal were-creature story, in fact the first few chapters contain quite disturbing content. If you find scenes of rape, violence and group sex disturbing then this isn't the story for you. But bearing that it mind, if you get past the first 7 or 8 chapters, you'll be OK.
This story introduces us to Mike who is hoping to find his Mr Right on Bear Night, but that all goes wrong when he is kidnapped by a sadistic Lycan pack who imprison him and use him as their human sex slave.
One night he's taken to a bar where he's used and abused by the lycans. This is where we learn he's Bear Kindred and he finds his Mr Right, only it's not that simple.
What follows is a story that introduces us to were-bears, their history and the adventures it takes Gunnar to rescue his Cub. The secondary characters are a delight and add love and humor.
As astone2292 says: In terms of the perspective of the were-creature genre, the author does his work to set his universe apart from others. Placing a stress of importance on kindred humans is both refreshing and welcome.
This is the first story from this author and the first Book in the Were-bears in America. For those who love were-creature stories that contain a sliver of hope, this a great story.

Cia went searching through old newsletters in a quest for some Blast from the Past material. She came across this wonderful interview by Kevin (aka: AFriendlyFace) in an October 2006 newsletter. Hope you enjoy the interview as well as Cia's introduction and conclusion.
GA has inspired many readers to take the leap into writing, myself included! The writing information and programs found on the site have changed over the years, but that encouraging support has always been here. Check out this interview with AFriendlyFace, then member and mod, now Promising Author.

Interview with AFriendlyFace
GA: So, thanks for agreeing to let us profile you. Please tell our readers who you are.
Kevin: Well, I usually just go by Kevin or AFriendlyFace. I found this site over a year ago and I've been hooked ever since!
GA: Did anyone pay you to say that?
Kevin: Hahaha, nope! I just really love the site though. I've met some REALLY awesome people through it and thoroughly enjoyed reading the stories!
GA: How did you find the site in the first place?
Kevin: Well, I found Dom Luka's The Ordinary Us on Nifty and after I read all the chapter that were up I saw the link to GA. So I came here and read the rest that were up (but it still wasn't complete at that time). Then I read all of The Log Way <lol> and having a big mouth, I just had to comment on it once I was done. So I joined the forum and started running my mouth and I haven't stopped yet.
GA: Does that mean that Dom Luka is your favorite author?
Kevin: Hmm. Possibly. I would have said yes without any hesitation six months ago, but lately I've been reading so much stuff by other really talented authors that I really can't pick a favourite.
GA: How diplomatic. So which authors are on your 'must read' list?
Kevin: In alphabetical order: Dom Luka, LittleBuddhaTW, NickolasJames8, RHawes16, Viv and Vlista. I just know I'm forgetting some though and also I've read a few things by some others that I really enjoyed and looked forward to reading more by. Those are just the ones whose complete work I've read and thoroughly enjoyed.
GA: By the way...favourite? You're not from around these parts, are you?
Kevin: LOL! Actually, I am! The 'ou' spelling is just a quirky little eccentricity I picked up. When I was younger I used to read a good bit of British Lit. (especially P.G. Wodehouse), and some things just sort of sunk in I guess and honestly I just prefer the way it makes the words look. Besides I don't want to seem too 'normal.'
GA: Hehehe. What's your biggest eccentricity?
Kevin: Hmm...my biggest eccentricity...<lol>. That's a tough one. I guess one would be that I enjoy over-analyzing words and phrases. I also really enjoy seeing the absurdity in every day life and I do have a tendency to try to find something positive or amusing even in bad situations. Last night, when I was feeling AWFUL and weak with a migraine, I realized that I'd just finished shaving and that in that regard I was like Samson. Of course, the laughing actually hurt a bit, but it cheered me up.
GA: You do know what ultimately happened to Samson, right?
Kevin: ....yes, well, I didn't take the comparison too far!
GA: That's a good thing! Are you always this friendly, nice and positive?
Kevin: Hahaha. Well, I try to be and if I'm feeling grumpy I tend to just not be around people, unless they don't mind me whining. As someone who majored in psychology I've analyzed it A LOT and I think it mostly comes down to having to make sure everyone is having fun and is at ease. If not, I feel responsible for making it better. <LOL> I've got several people I whine to though!
GA: Speaking of whining...you do have a blog right? What made you decide to start a blog at GA?
Kevin: Yep, I love blogging. I think I enjoy it for several reasons. First of all, I tend to be analytical with regards to my own thoughts and feelings, so it's perfect for that. Also, I really enjoy the writing process in general, so even if I haven't managed to focus enough to write an actual story the blog's a start. Last, it definitely is great for 'whining' purposes, but mostly because people's comments have really helped me get a new perspective on things, as well as just good old-fashioned practical advice. I'm a firm believer in asking for help if you need it, so I like to ask sometimes.
GA: What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten?
Kevin: Hmm, well, I'd say the thing that stands out to me the most in terms of pure wisdom is when I was a kid and my grandmother used to always tell me, "Everybody's different, that's what makes the world so much fun." Of course, that wasn't in a blog, but it could have been!
GA: Yep, it definitely could. What else makes the world fun for you?
Kevin: Lately? New things. I've been on quite a kick about trying new things, going new places etc. I also really love meeting new people and just sitting around talking to people. Oh yeah, and chocolate and shopping are fun too.
GA: So shopping for chocolate in a new place with a new friend is the ideal?
Kevin: Pure bliss!
GA: Your favorite kind of chocolate?
Kevin: Fudge. I also tend to like brownies and cakes and things. I seldom ever just eat like a bar of chocolate and if I do, it's probably going to be dark chocolate, not milk.
GA: Place you'd most like to travel to?
Kevin: Definitely the British Isles, and if I could, Western/Southern Europe, in general.
GA: British isles? Is that why your avatar is a pirate?
Kevin: Haha! Ben was kind enough to make it for me. As an interesting aside, about a month ago I had a hair dying "accident" and given my blue eyes and pale skin, I realized if I put on the get-up, I could pass for my avatar.
GA: So you have no nose?
Kevin: Haha, umm, it fell off from all the dye.
GA: That's some accident.
Kevin: Quite a relief actually - that stuff smells terrible!
GA: You always do find the bright side of things.
Kevin: <smile>
GA: Which pirate are you most like: Dred Pirate Roberts, Captain Jack Sparrow or Captain Crunch?
Kevin: Hmm, I'd say Captain Jack. He's delightfully strange, but everything seems to just sort of work out for him. I often feel like I'm just strolling through life falling into good luck...and of course I'm rather strange too.
GA: What's your favorite part of GA?
Kevin: I guess the forums in general, but it's a close tie with the blogs. It's just really fun to get people's insight into things. Of course, I love the stories! In general, it seems like I learn something new about the place all the time. <LOL> Just yesterday, Vance showed me the calendar - I never knew that existed. I was super-excited.
GA: Calendars are exciting.
Kevin: Yep, it's like life on a piece of paper. Where else are you going to get to see everything all mapped out?
GA: On a map?
Kevin: Ohhhh...well maps are just impossible to fold! Calendars are way cooler.
GA: To go in a different direction...if you could give a message to yourself - 5 years into the past - what would you tell yourself?
Kevin: Hmm, I'd tell myself to relax more. I'd also mention a few lottery numbers.
GA: And if you could ask yourself - 10 or 20 years in the future - something, what would it be?
Kevin: I'd definitely like to just KNOW who I was going to end up with and what I'd be doing career-wise. I suppose half the fun is in the surprise, but sometimes it's nice to expect the surprise.
GA: If you knew those answers, do you think it would make it more likely that it would happen that way or less likely?
Kevin: Well, I definitely believe in the whole "butterfly effect". So changing anything would probably be risky and that would certainly include knowing your future. So, I guess in the end, I'd opt not to know.
GA: Fair enough. I didn't mean to trap you in a time travel paradox.
Kevin: Hahaha! That's okay, it's one of my favourite things to contemplate.
GA: What's your favorite time travel paradox story, movie, or television episode?
Kevin: Hmm, well, I really enjoyed Do Over by dkstories. As far as television goes, there's this British sci-fi comedy from the 1990s called Red Dwarf. They dealt with the phenomenon many times over the course of the series and it was always fun to watch how it played out.
GA: Was it grade B? All shaky cameras?
Kevin: <LOL> No, I think it was fairly successful actually. In fact, a few months ago it actually came up in Dom's forum when one of the character's ate HOT gazpacho soup. The fact that gazpacho soup is typically served cold was central to one of the episodes and a few other readers and I remarked on the connection.
GA: What does that say about Dom Luka's forums and our readers?
Kevin: Well, I could go with 'we're all sci-fi nuts,' but I'm thinking I'll go with 'we're well-rounded individuals who have an eclectic taste in the arts.'
GA: I was thinking maybe you all need to get out more...
Kevin: <LOL> A one-eyed pirate without a nose? Who can't fold a map! I wouldn't get far.
GA: Is that what your personal ad would say?
Kevin: NOOOO. It would say: well-rounded individual with an eclectic taste in the arts...
GA: Pirates who can't fold maps might be more in demand.
Kevin: <lol> Well, then I'll be: well-rounded pirate, eclectic taste in the arts, slight map-folding deficiency.
GA: That's a winner. Ok, so this is your big chance to get a message out to our entire community. What do you want to tell everyone?
Kevin: I want them to know that regardless of the situations in their lives, there's always hope for things to get better and there will always be people out there who will love and accept them just the way they are. And that includes EVERYONE!
GA: That's a good one.
Kevin: Thanks <lol> It was between that and the directions to the nearest calendar shop.
GA: Not the chocolate shop?
Kevin: Naw....I couldn't unfold the map for that one.
GA: Hehehe. Even a one-eyed pirate could see that coming a mile away
Kevin: Hehehe. I guess!
GA: Thanks for humoring us.
Kevin: My pleasure! I had a great time.
GA: Of course you did. Oh right, me too....

This book, published in November 2020 is set in contemporary Britain during the pandemic, something which the author handles well. It has a very British tone with expressions such as, "Freezing his bollocks off..." and, yes it's the winter, the story takes place over a few months leading up to Christmas and the New Year.
Mr Lomax (the author) has a narrative style which elaborates not only his characters' thoughts and emotions, but their expressions, "Welcome surprise melted away his pissed-off mood. When he read the words again, pleasure curled in his stomach and his heart rate sped up. Of its own volition, a smile pushed its way to the surface and fixed itself on his face. Looking into space, he fanned himself with the card."
Some of the metaphors, which flow thick and fast, bypassed me, "I'll Jamie Lee Curtis him if he tries anything."
I certainly liked our protagonist, Spencer, how he comforted himself and wrestled with his own insecurities. He is the sort of guy you would enjoy being with and perhaps sharing a laugh together, but he doesn't give anything of himself away, so was always just the person you met and you never felt anything more.
When Spencer's dad starts asking about boyfriends and thinking Spencer must, like all gay men, hook up on Gumblr, which Spencer corrects him on, Grindr, it gets more hilarious still. "Your brother used to have a waiting list courtesy of his straight one, Tinkler.”
“Tinder!” said Spencer, horrified at the thought of an app by the name his father supplied." That made me laugh, I think our author has a wicked sense of humour.
“So what do you make of the Sugar Boys?”
“Sugar Boys?”
“Tate and Lyle.”
Spencer had choked on his tonic water. He hadn’t made the connection to the sugar company." Nor did I until it was made clear and caused yet more humour, although I should add that in Britain Tate and Lyle is to sugar what Hoover is to vacuum cleaners.
The descriptions conjure up the exact picture and even (for me) provide education, having never encountered "mocktails" before, well not the word to describe the drink, although eminently suitable as an epithet.
"Five of them shared a table overlooking the seafront—Peony happily agreeing to join them—as the foul-weathered light show playing out over the English Channel occasionally dragged their attention away from conversation. His brother sat with his arm protectively around Peony the whole time as she sipped on her pomegranate mocktail..."
Whilst swept along with the unrolling story, carried on the waves of clever conversation and sharp observation, one nevertheless feels at pain to discover any deeper emotional connection. The characters are very real, representative of the host of people we encounter in our lives, but we only get the gloss and hardly touch any depth. Take the quasi suicide evoked when Spenser first meets Marshall, it was nothing more than a pretence play in a superficial world which leaves you wondering if anyone is affected by anything. Don't read that wrong, it's immensely entertaining, well written, and easy to read, it simply throws up a whole question about the lives these people are living. Later, as the romance builds, things get notably more dramatic, it is a slow build up, but along the way somewhere, I think everyone starts rooting for Spencer.
When the author tells us about Killian's brilliant piece for the magazine and his use of malapropisms, one of the examples quoted is simply hilarious, "a former Tory minister decrying the Chinese authorities for banning the people of Hong Kong from enjoying 'universal suffering’ like the rest of the civilised world."
When Joe turns up at the Bangladeshi restaurant, looking the worst for wear, it becomes apparent that there is a deeper emotional drama running through the story. There is more to this tale than a simple budgeoning romance in the glamourous, but rather superficial world of lifestyle magazine publishing.
It would be an aweful pun to say we reach the climax of the story in the middle of the book, I say this only because I have my reservations about the place of graphic sex scenes. Lines like, "I want you inside me." which come as a relief to our handsome and debonair Marshall, are somewhat cringe-worthy. Then the graphic detail, "...he gasped aloud when a new coat of cooling lube pressed into his entrance. ...switching to a couple of fingers to loosen him up, gently but firmly twisting and probing, before adding another, ...maintaining the eager kissing until Spencer felt ready to come unglued." For me, the author came a little unstuck himself by indulging in the quasi-porn which, although at least one reader found it "hot," I'm sure others skipped through. My point is not with the graphic nature of the scene, but rather with having virtually a whole chapter of sex. A bit too much!
Mr Lomax himself told me what he expected from a review and I believe I have fulfilled all requirements, like Spencer, perhaps I should get the job? "People often think the reviews are simply a reviewer's personal opinion about a production, which, in fairness, is what they generally are. But a true theatre review is created to guide somebody who is considering seeing a play, to give them background; an outline of the plot, about the historical setting, cultural significance, and relevance, and about some of the characters. Criticism should form only a small part of the review and, in my opinion, be wholly substantiated."
If I have to sum all this up, and I do, I would label it light entertainment in the very best tradition. The kind of book you can take on holiday or read on the way to work. The observation and characterisation is great, the dialogue spot on, and the descriptive narrative welĺ drawn. It is most definitely of our time, the twenty-twenties, and the handling of the global health crisis is perfect. Like the whole story, it is there in perfect measure, as is the the very ordinary British family and the totally believable working life of Spencer. There is glitz, glamour, and celebraties, drama and angst, but above all there is romance, because this is after all a romance novel. It is superbly done, what more could you want? Go read it, and enjoy yourself.

Prompt #114
I saw Mischa in his front yard shooting hoops. I’ve fancied him since I first saw him six months ago. My name is Samuel and I’m thirteen. His family have lived here for years and everyone in town seems to know Mischa and nobody seems to have a bad word to say about him. I think that’s why my parents don’t have a problem with us being friends.
I walked down to his place. “Morning Mischa.”
“Good Morning Samuel.” I love his Russian accent; I think it was either that or his pale violet eyes that I fell in love with first.
“What’s happening Mischa? You got family visiting?” I looked at all the cars parked in the drive and on the street. I’d seen people arriving since yesterday, and they were all greeted so friendly by Mischa’s parents.
“Yah, something like that.”
Another car arrived and a very large burly guy got out. Mischa’s dad ran over to him and greeted him in what I presume to be his native Russian. They kissed each other on the cheek and hugged briefly.
The large guy was being escorted into the house when he looked at Mischa. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear I saw fear in the man’s eyes; but how can that be? He was at least eight inches taller than Mischa and a hundred plus pounds of solid muscle heavier.
Mischa smiled at me and that was enough to distract me from what I was thinking; I just shrugged it off as me being me. We played around for a couple of hours before mum called me in for dinner.
“Bye, Mischa. See you tomorrow.”
“Good bye Samuel.” Mischa smiled and thought to himself, “And I will see you sooner that you think my friend.”
I was just getting to sleep, when I heard a tap on my window. I looked out and saw Mischa. I wondered not only why he was tapping on my window, but tapping on it at nearly midnight. I opened my window to find out what he wanted, and was shocked when the burly guy I had seen earlier dragged me through my window and stuck me in a sack.
I was unceremoniously dropped out of the sack a few minutes later. I saw I was in a large room, surrounded by many of the people I had seen arriving over the past day.
“Ah, the guest of honour has arrived. We can begin.” I looked around to try and find the source of the thick Russian accent, and saw someone wearing dark robes standing behind an altar. I only had time to think about why Mischa’s family would have an altar, before I was roughly grabbed around the neck, dragged over to the altar and chained in front of it.
“On this day ninety-five years ago, the greatest man who ever lived was assassinated. We, the loyal followers of Rasputin, are here today to honour him and his living spirit here on Earth.” The hooded figure turned to face Mischa and bowed. Everyone in the room turned to Mischa, dropped to one knee and began muttering, again in what I presumed was their native Russian.
Mischa walked over to me and placed a hand on my head. “Samuel, my friend. You are here to play a most vital role in today’s ceremony. Shortly before the body I was in died on December 29th in the Year of our Lord 1916, I left it and entered the body of a near-by child. The closest you can come to understanding what I am is a soul. I have now been in this body for those ninety-five years, and it is now dying. It is time for me to move on to a new body. I have chosen to move on to yours.”
I looked on at the boy I loved in sheer terror at what he had just said. The thoughts whirled through my head as fast as the speed of light.
Mischa’s wrist was cuffed to my own. The hooded figure cut each of us on our palms, and Mischa clasped my hand in his own. The hooded figure began chanting, and he was then joined by the rest of the assembly.
As our blood mingled, I could feel something passing into my body; a feeling of pure evil, of malice, of insanity. It began suppressing every thought I had, every feeling of self. It was like being wrapped in a cloak which had its own identity.
The boy I had known as ‘Mischa’ turned to me. “I beg your forgiveness. I could not fight it, nor stop it. I . . . am . . . tru . . . ly . . . .”
The last thoughts that were my own, were forgiveness for the boy who had played host to this demonic being for nearly a century, sorrow for myself (wondering what damage, what carnage, what acts I will be forced to commit against my will over the hundred years to come), but most disturbingly of all was how much of the boy I knew and loved was really Mischa, and how much was this ghost . . . this soul . . . just trying to bait its next host.
We look forward to seeing what you can come up with for this weeks prompt and maybe next week, yours can be the featured prompt!!!

Destruction - Self and Otherwise
Author: @Headstall
Theme: The Storm
Storms, vicious ones, are not always created by nature. This poem is about a different kind of devastation.
Reader Comments:
aditus: Amid all the tragedy and sadness, you manage to send out a ray of hope one can survive the hurricane or even become the storm.
Parker Owens: I feel the howling winds and slashing rain of the storm you experienced. While it echoes in the far distance now, you’ve written new thunder to peal across the page.
wildone: As others have mentioned, this is an example of how one works to finally take back their life and destiny. The final stanza is an excellent conclusion!
Well well well, it's that time again. I hope you all have your thinking caps on, cause I'm ready to see if anyone can guess the author this month! I keep hoping that eventually one of these will stump members, but it never happens. *sigh* Oh well, we'll keep trying!
What is one thing that most GA members might not know about you?
Although I sold off most of the collection a few years ago, I once had over 3,000 Hard Rock lapel pins. There are 300 odd ones left on display at my place.
What prompted you to write your first story?
I wrote the author of a story I liked on Nifty to compliment him and thank him for sharing. We began corresponding and he eventually asked me to beta read for him. After a while, I decided to try my hand at it. I wrote a story, shared it with a couple of authors I was exchanging emails with and two individuals I’d met on the author’s Facebook page. They all suggested I publish it. I did on GA.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading and have you written for that genre?
Science Fiction. Particularly older stuff. At the time I’m answering the question, I’m re-reading Philip Jose Farmer’s To Your Scattered Bodies Go. I’ve dabbled in the genre.
Is there a genre that you haven’t written for that you would consider trying later on?
Detective/mystery stories. I’m scared I won’t come up with enough twists and turns to make it interesting. Maybe in the future once I clear up the backlog of potential stories.
What do like most about publishing on GA?
The ability to upload stuff without an intermediary and the interaction with readers.
Do you have any unique writing habits or rituals to help you get into a writing mood?
Nothing special or outrageous. I tend to write early in the morning while working my way through a pot of coffee. Usually start off reading whatever I wrote the day before or transcribing any notes I made the previous ebening. I keep pen and paper handy to jot down plot ideas, names, locations, or bits of dialogue.
How has your writing style evolved over time?
Cia once wrote something to the effect writers need to know the rules before deciding whether to follow them or flaunt them. I’ve taken that suggestion to heart. Although my basic approach to telling a story hasn’t changed much, the mechanics have. I’m still working on streamlining my work, I dislike overly wordy stories and repetition… of words and events.
Do you have a significant other?
Not since I kicked the last one out. LOL
Do you have any pets?
Nope. Couldn’t handle it after having to put my last dog down.
Do you post multi-chapter stories as you write? Do you wait until you’ve finished writing the entire story? Or is it something in between?
I’ve done both but prefer to post once the story’s complete. A couple of times, with long, multi-chapter stories, I’ve begun posting before they were complete. However, I had enough chapters ready to compensate for any writing or editing delays. I’m proud of never having missed a posting day once I start sharing a story.
What is your favorite television show?
I usually get tired of them after two or three seasons. M•A•S•H was always a favorite. Reruns are still enjoyable. I dislike most reality shows but do enjoy Top Chef and The Property Brothers.
What is your favorite movie?
Casablanca. It was released way before I was born, but Bogart’s gritty character and Bergman’s strong woman (for the 1940s) resonate with me.
Do you write poetry? Prose? Or both?
Prose. I don’t get most poetry.
If you could meet one person, living or dead, who would it be?
Jesus Christ. If he really existed. I’d love to strip back centuries of myth and discover the human who simultaneously brought so much joy and so much pain to the world.
What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?
Surviving. I’ve done plenty of stupid thing in my life. I’ve been close to death a couple of times and always wondered why I was still around. Maybe so I could share my stories?
So, what do you think? Think you know who it is? Post your guess in the comments!!!
Hard to believe it's already March! Then again, my days get all mixed up since we don't do a whole lot! Anyway, hope you all enjoy this review from our review team!

Well if we fancy an escape from the cold weather that many of us are suffering from, what better than a visit to Perth, Western Australia.
We meet Jexon Kendrick a veterinary student who goes to university in Perth, but his home is a remote cattle in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, just south of the hottest town in the state, where the temperature reaches 40 degrees or above in the summer months.
But things don't run smoothly for Jexon when he reaches 21. This story is not what it seems there are many interesting things that happen throughout the story.
We are introduced to an Airbase and some awesome Military Planes as they undergo restoration, but even this doesn't run smoothly as we meet trespassers on the Airbase, which get the local Police involved.
We have Jewelry thieves involving large sums of money. Visits to the capital for Jexon where the army becomes involved. More cattle stations. We then get Jexon doing marine research on an island as part of his veterinary course.
We get to meet his friends Marcus and Auggie who become really important to Jexon as he slowly gets to his lifetime goal of setting up his own veterinary practice.
As with any Quokka story we are treated to some of the delights of Australia. All encompassed in a fantastic story where nothing is straightforward and we get plenty of action, drama and trials and tribulations before the ultimate goal is reached.
As with a lot of Quokka's stories you are left with an ending that leaves you wanting more.

Author: @Valkyrie
Theme: The Storm
Patrick is accused of a heinous crime, which threatens to destroy his career and entire life, whether he's guilty or not.
Reader Comments:
Carlos Hazday: I liked the way you painted the picture with wide brush strokes. This is proof a good story doesn't have to ramble on.
GanymedeRex: Great job doing this whole thing in one chapter. It was riveting. I'm glad for the positive resolution - too many in his situation were just destroyed.
Geron Kees: Good story on a difficult subject, well presented, and with sympathy.
