Wow, what a trip down memory lane..... Sam. Does JP fuck all his TAs?
-
Brad made some mistakes with Will, but shitshow is Will's middle name, William Shitshow Schluter. He was out of control since Italy and the family indulged him instead of giving him the discipline and structure he needed.

I'm so glad you liked it! Stefan gets his first story with "The Land Whore." He's a fun narrator. JP is always looking for love. Sometimes he finds it. Sometimes it hurts. If JP had found the love he wound up with there would have been a very dull 16 more books of CAP. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! JP's not supposed to be really likable in this story, because he's a very stunted person (emotionally). He gets better as the stories unfold. Congratulations, he wasn't. 🤣 It is interesting reading through this story again, especially as a I have been rereading in a shotgun manner other books. I think this book was good, but like anything in life, the more you do it, the better you get. Your skills as a writer have gotten better and better as time has gone on. I can't think about GA without thing about Dom. It makes sad to think about him and where he might have gone with his skills had he pursued as diligently as you have. But then the next step is a deeper appreciation of Mark Arbour and your relentless dedication to your craft and to maintain that dedication through all of life's normal struggles of health, family, work. I know I tease and poke a lot, but underneath is a true affection for you and for the world you have created and that you take all of us along on the ride. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"You're a fucking liar. A god damn fucking liar.” No JP, he is an 18 year old college freshman. You are the one who is fucked up for thinking a 17 year old/18 year old is going to have any notion of what love and commitment are when they haven't lived as much life as you have, especially given the background/home life of that particular 17 year old/18 year old. It is the very definition of unequally yoked. Again, why is JP a JFK fan. There were over 11,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam when Andre died and now JFK has pushed that number to over 16,000.

JP has only become a "very sexual being" in the last 18 months or so and he's allowed his dick to make LOTS of bad decisions for him. Somehow JP lived the first 25 years of his life with very limited sexual experiences and now they rule his life. Jeff is a huge mistake for JP and always has been. How did he think a relationship between a 17 year old high school student and college professor was going to turn out? The unequal status of JP and Jeff was always going to be a problem. Nine years isn't a huge difference between a 26 year old and 35 year old, but is a yawning gap between a 17 year old and 26 year old. Maybe if JP were a 26 year old mill worker who started in the mill after high school it would have worked easier. Jeff needs to be a college freshman and do college freshmen things. JP needed to be smart enough to see that. But again, like so many characters in CAP, JP is very selfish and self centered and the new JP (since the road trip to Delaware) needs to get his dick under control.

I think this is just a fucked up chapter. Not that it isn't well written, but JP seems to have made so many mistakes this chapter. As I said in the last chapter, Knowledge is Power. Being a "queer" was a big deal in 1963, but JP lets an ever expanding circle know his secrets and that isn't good. The whole Jason thing was very badly handled and will surface its ugly head again some day. JP never should have gotten so involved with Jason or the drama in his life.
-
Knowledge is power. John Paul, for a smart man, has let Jason get way too close to him and know way too much about him. I honestly don't remember what kind of trouble Jason causes, it has been so long since I've read the early CAP books, but I do seem to recall trouble on the horizon. It is nice that Tonto bought JPs old condo, but it is a long ways from the University of Chicago. Stef is a just a kid still. He should be living on campus, eating in the Dining Commons and getting the college experience.
-
Oh dear, you have a lot of CAP books to read to catch up 🤣 What seems to have gone by the wayside here is Jeff got into Northwestern on a football scholarship. He'd be expected to live in the dorm and eat meals with the team. He could hardly live with a professor. And neither JP nor Jeff can be out of the closet. It isn't like they can walk around Chicago hand in hand in 1963.

Sam Cunningham did more for integration at the University of Alabama than anyone.

I'd have bought one of the great houses on Sheridan Road in Evanston, walking distance to Northwestern. High rise life is great for couples, but toddlers and little kids need yards. If they are doing a condo floor, they need to add a cook/maid's room. I'd leave Jason in the condo on the 20th Floor and hire a Vella knock off to cook and help with the kids. Hopefully they double glaze the windows to keep the bitter cold winds that come off the lake from making the condo too cold. I stay at the Ritz Carlton at Water Tower Place and it was so bitter cold one day in January with the winds, that they had to close the south facing rooms. In order to keep the south rooms warm, it was turning the north facing rooms into saunas.

I finally deduced from her correspondence that she was nervous about flying with little Andre until he was just a bit older. I am surprised that JP didn't put her and Ace on the SS France. In 1963 the ocean liners were still the preferred travel mode for the wealthy to cross between America and Europe. Then a trip from NYC to Chicago on the 20th Century Limited. That could have been several great chapters. I also do not believe that Carol is pregnant.

All J. Edgar wanted was Stef's phone number. He'd heard of Stef's fabulous fashion sense and he was hoping for some tips for his annual trip to the Hotel del Charro in La Jolla. Rumor has it that it was Stef who convinced J. Edgar that feather boas were not a good look for him.

Mark was referring to the events that transpire in the sequel to Chronicles Of An Academic Predator, the book, 1968. What I will never understand about any CAP character is how you can be so deeply, head over heels (or heels over head in gay love stories) with someone and then hit on every man that crosses your path. When I am in love, I really only want to be with the person I love. I guess I am more like Wade, who seems to be the same.
-
Maybe I'll understand later what happens with Jeff, I don't remember how we get to where we are going.
-
I don't get why JP likes Kennedy. When Eisenhower left office there were less than 1,000 U.S. troops in country in Vietnam. By the time Andre as killed, there over 11,000 U.S. troops in country in Vietnam in less than two years. If U.S. troop levels had stayed under 1,000 there is no chance Andre would have been at risk.

If he fucked her, it would technically be OK, but on the moral scale, it would be a massive transgression. The what scale? The guy who stopped a rape only to finger fuck the victim wants to discuss a moral scale? These poor people are being uprooted and relocated, and it makes them hate their government and, by extension, hate us as well. The Viet Cong couldn't have asked for an easier task, integrating and co-opting these peasants Well it makes all the sense in the world when you realize that the man in charge of the South Vietnamese SHP, Colonel Phạm Ngọc Thao, was a commie double agent and he deliberately designed the program to precisely make the peasants hate the RVN.
-
See, here is one of the problems of moral relativism and no set standard of values..... you can't judge anyone else for their behavior. How is a man whore, serial rapist, child abuser and unprofessional lout going to judge anyone else?
-
Oh gawd, bring back the abuse and torture..... I'd rather have that than a 26 year old Ph.d being cloyingly sweet and goo goo over a high school senior.
-
Yeah, Division I wrestlers in 1962 were going to a hospital and say there had been a man's dick in their ass...... a 5'7", 130 pound man..... There was no DNA testing in 1962. I do agree with others though that JP, for how smart he is, is making horrible decisions. But that is part of the problem when morality and values are seen as relative. With Mallory you could have written it off as a one time, temporarily insane kind of thing, but now there is a pattern, and not a pleasant one. And as if that isn't bad enough, JP's getting involved with Tom Hartford is obviously a terrible idea and a massive ethics violation. The stuff with Boyd could send JP to prison, the stuff with Hartford could ruin his carefully constructed career.
-
“I love you too Jeff, more than I can say. But if we make some big commitment now, well, what happens if one of us has too much to drink and fucks up, or more to the point, fucks someone else?” Okay, seriously.... it has been 20 days since that other guy.... what was his name? You know.... that guy JP kind of liked sort of.... passed away. If I lost my soulmate, I'd be in a dark place for months, maybe much longer. On a different topic, not a chance a wrestler from "the South" makes Northwestern's wrestling team, lot alone two wrestlers from "the South". Northwestern's wrestling team in 1962 would be wrestlers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. Should have made them baseball players.

"There’s a small cadre of people who own all the land and the rest are peasants. The communists appear to offer a solution to that, while the capitalists, us, are defending the big landowners and the status quo.” The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

JP had no idea he'd have four children one day. He also had no idea he'd be at Stanford eventually. No one knew what the future held, but obviously the stock was no surprise to Jim, because he knew Jack changed to amount. I think the split window 'vette is ugly as sin.
-
He assumes the mantle after his father and that generation are dead and he and Stef have the money to give back in Claremont. JP was always the king in Palo Alto.
-
"oh my gawd, the love of my life, my soulmate is dead, I found out yesterday, fuck me, new love of my life" I think I'd spend more time grieving and less time getting plowed.
