  1. Thanks Stephen! Little Joe is definitely going to be a recurring character in the series. Wouldn't have dedicated a chapter for him otherwise!
  2. CHAPTER 10: Little Joe The quick pattering of feet pounding across the floor came the moment I had knocked on the door. Moments later, it swung open and a wide boyish smile greeted us. “Sammy!” Little Joe exclaimed moments before he suddenly jumped against me and gave me a hug, his feet dangling a little in the air since I was still taller than him. His dark brown hair was long and messy like he had forgotten (or more likely hadn’t bothered) to comb it. He looked thin but when he jumped on me,
  3. CHAPTER 9: Turning Tides “You are progressing quite admirably,” Master Leveret said. As one of the primary combat instructors in the Academy, he was naturally tasked to oversee much of my development in the field of combat magic. “Your ability to predict your enemy’s attacks is almost unparalleled among other students. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were gifted with foresight.” “Thank you, Master Leveret, for the high praise,” I said with a slight bow. It has been many months since I was
  4. Haha. So it seems.
  5. Hi folks. I'm looking for an app that may be able to so some (though preferably all) of these things. I've recently acquired an ipad which I want to utilize for writing since I carry it around almost everywhere I go (whereas my laptop sits at home or at work most of the time now). I'm looking for an app that can: - convert handwritten notes to text (so that I don't have to encode it again later on through a computer) - has a search feature (if I want to review/change something I wrote earlier) - can be password protected (I don't want just anyone who borrows my ipad to be able to read it Does such an app exist on the Apple Store? Cheers, HC
  6. CHAPTER 8: Empathy “So how different are things now where you train?” Matty asked as he picked up a blade of mountain grass and started rolling it between his fingers. It seemed he was unconsciously picking up Nathan’s odd habits. We were up at the place Nathan had shown us that overlooked Malden. It had been several months since I returned from the Hoarfrost Caverns and was advanced one form. “Not much really,” I shrugged. “I’m just training now with others who are a little older than me. And
  7. Thanks!
  8. Aah, okay. Well, I'm glad you liked it anyway (despite the tears hehe). Thank you.
  9. CHAPTER 7: Intervention Nathan had a habit of being weird so I could hardly believe he was right. That thing, that beast, he described actually existed. “What else have you not told us?” Ernie asked Nathan. We were seated around a fire, a reprieve from the frigid cold. It was the third day of the Rites and the trainees who went into the caves to become journeymen had returned. Most were taking a rest before we all headed back to Malden. “Nothing,” Nathan replied and sighed heavily as Ernie ju
  10. Hello prettyname, I'm definitely set in finishing this story (after all, the chapters are written but just need a little more polishing). Computer games are taking up a lot (actually TOO MUCH) of my time and I find myself often without the energy to write. There are two other stories I have already started which I haven't been able to continue because most of the time I'm playing. Perhaps when I finally have the strength to say NO to games, I'll be better able to focus on writing.

    EPILOGUE

Aah, I didn't think this story was sad (save that one chapter perhaps). At least it isn't compared to the emotional roller coaster that my other story here is. Hehe. I learned from this story that while a little uncertainty is good, a lot of unanswered questions are bad. It's something I'm hoping to avoid with the sequels and mini-novels after. The first mini-novel is in progress already if you want to check it. That one isn't sad (at least, I'm pretty sure it isn't). Overall, I feel this series is light-hearted with humor and allegories intended to make you think (lightly) more than feel. But hey, maybe that's just me.
  12. Well, I had to cut the chapter at SOME point.
  13. Apologies for the delay in posting. Christmas vacation is done so I'm now back to writing/posting. Don't worry, this story will be completed as long as it's within my power. - HC * * * * * * * * * * CHAPTER 6: Mountain Escort Mistress Gwen was not naive. And she saw exactly the same thing that Lance probably saw upon the declaration that he would not be allowed to join the others of his form for their Rites. I had something to do with Lance’s predicament. She knew it wasn’t true, of cours

Thanks for reading my story, jd91. In many ways, "heroes" was a theme for me when I wrote this story. Even Derek's dad is in his own way a hero (albeit a tragic one). I was originally going to include his story in this one but I felt it would get too long (and the sudden change of the narrator midway seemed off to me). Perhaps someday his story would get written.
  15. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed Charlie and that it brought you here to this story.
  16. Once you've finished this story, you might want to check out the first mini-novel in the series (Spirit of Vengeance). Some of the questions you have here *might* get answered there.
  17. CHAPTER 5: Archers My uncle and I sat there for several minutes of silence. Ernie and Nathan had already left and he was staring intently at me as though waiting for me to make the first move. I didn’t really know what I was supposed to say. I didn’t know why he was there and I certainly hoped it was more than just to hand out stable duty to me. “You two will report to the stable master tonight and the next two days,” my uncle finally said after the long quiet. “And if you don’t head back to t
  18. CHAPTER 4: The Grudge Ernie was an excellent fighter. No matter what else was said about him, he could hold his own in a fight even against a more experienced foe. He was, strictly speaking, only receiving the same level of training I was. Yet, he had a degree of control over Water Magic that surpassed anyone else in our form. It wasn’t a surprise then that he was easily defeating the trainee he was fighting who was supposed to have two full year’s worth of training more than my friend. I coul
  19. Oh, I'm not sure on what you mean by that. Hehe.
  20. Indeed she does! Haha.

    You are most welcome joann414.
  22. CHAPTER 3: The Path of Water “You are water mages,” Mistress Gwen said, putting a pause on each word as though to emphasize their importance. “You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. Not only are you capable of controlling water, you are exemplary at it. The Path of Water is not one for everyone and in truth there are not many who have the aptitude to pass the trials you will endure.” She turned slowly pacing towards the other end of the room. “You are here because you have the potential to increa
