She's finally fallen asleep. We were up all night, sponging her down and singing to her as we waited for the three hour relays between paracetamol and ibuprofen to take effect. We were about to bundle her in the car and hightail it to the emergency unit when I found my old otoscope and looked in her ear. If a pharmacologist could see the inflammation, I managed to quip, then it's definitely otitis media. We called a paediatrician friend of mine who emailed a script because I lose all sense of me

Really enjoyed this! I really like the way the story starts gently and then you let the tension build slowly until it's quite creepy at the end - reminds me a bit of "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James! Beautiful descriptions too, you got the beauty and eeriness of the landscape down pat.

Absolutely. Especially after going through therapy and getting in touch with my emotions. As a boy I was taught that only girls cry, and suppressed so much. Thank God those days are over.
