  1. Welcome. The muttering annoys me, because i'm a big believer in telling people what i think of them - to their face. i expect people to be the same with me. reading your reply i was reminded of being there when a female friend of mind mention to another very straight female "friend" that she thought there were other women who were hot. it was like the straight girl just couldn't cope with the idea that someone she knew could possibly think this way. it was very surreal. Queen Victoria didn't outlaw lesbianism because she refused to believe that such a thing could exist, and it was a bit like that. Also, bear in mind the "friendly face of homophobia" and i have friends who fall into this category. nice, in principle, tolerant in theory, but when it comes down to either doing/saying something or actually meeting the boyfriend etc offer unthinking bigoted viewpoints. these are the type of people who will say "that's so gay" or "You're such a fag" and yet proclaim to be understanding. just food for thought.
  2. thanks for the extra share guys. i hate how BBC links don't work everywhere.

hey there, you said you wanted constructive reviews, so here goes. i like it, and i like the idea, though the poker stuff at the beginning was a bit off putting, very deep and specific very quickly. my big other thing was that there were a lot of slightly random metaphors and similes in the first 2/3 of the chapter. Stalactite teeth? not attractive, and his shoulders and back being wide as "horns" and then something about a looming bright palm tree??? i nearly gave up there, but it was worth it for the ending. the best thing was definitely the dialogue, witty, chipper, clever. very cool. you leave us with the feeling of knowing several characters we've never actually met or seen, and that is a very good skill. Please, if you think i have been overly critical, please tell me. generally, i liked it, enough to read on when i have time certainly. kudos, keep going. SD
  4. I haven't watched it yet, but this seems like it might be good: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p01fttrl/Stephen_Fry_Out_There_Episode_1/ Stephen Fry (oh holy and wonderful wordsmith) is looking at being gay around the world. it still scares me that for some people, the big bad darklands are still right on the doorstep.
  5. sneering. the sort of general shocked expression when they work out what they've seen, and my least favourite - the unintelligible mutter as they walk away.

  19. His room was not his room, the house was not the house he left, and when his mother had said ‘welcome home’ he’d felt nothing but empty. The flight had been fine, and mostly he’d slept with his hat tilted down over his eyes, smiled at the stewards and stewardesses, and been generally polite. The pair of little kids sitting in the seats in front had spent as much of the flight as they could between films staring at him over the back of their seats with hugs eyes. He tipped his hat to them and gi
  20. ideas are good. the bit from 30k to 50k is where all the satisfaction is my friend, the knowledge that you are on the way to being a winner, the smugness that can radiate off you once you're done and be your shield from the next empty page. come on Freddy, join us!
