Based on what I've read, Cuba has some of the most pristine reefs in the Caribbean. Some of it due to the lack of coastal development and tourism pressure. And that's what I used to get Owen invited to Cuba.
I haven't thought about bringing him back. However, I do have ideas for bringing back Eli (construction worker/Marine) and Flynn's kids. That the truck driver who hit Adriano's wife at the end of Summer.
I loved the slower pace in this chapter. And all the innuendo! How many eruptions, Randy?
One of the notes I left Wolf was about my bringing home pebbles from Blue Mountains National Park in Australia, and Zion National Park in Utah. I use them as cover in a couple of small houseplants.
Randy's already made up his mind...
I think I've used plethora in a story before. LOL
I do refer to my spreadsheets and read old chapters over from time to time, but for some reason, my memory loss doesn't include CJ details. I have more old characters resurfacing in upcoming outlines.
I never said it would be the trident Banner would carry around. LOL
Because so much iconography back in the 16th century was tied to religion, I debated whether a trident would be an appropriate item. Decided to go with it since it could have been crafted for a naval person.
You're not the first reader unhappy with CJ. I think people expected the typical gay story where the MC falls in love right away. You're right, CJ probably saw the whole thing as a summer romance.
I'm glad I can provideentertainment with my stories. I try to make them interesting enough so the educational aspects and my preaching don't take over.
First, a little sports: Florida Panthers 2, Toronto Maple Leafs 0.
I think the trident will become the logo for the Luz de Castilla museum which will display most of what's recovered.
Damn, I did include a lot of references to old stuff. As I told a recent binge reader, google Thierry Peppin. He has CJ's tattoo (Thierry was the inspiration) And he does look a little like CJ.
Camilo's my countermeasure to Jay. CJ made an enemy during the trip, and maybe a friend. We'll see what happens with Camilo. I've tried to slowly expand Owen's role while keeping CJ as the protagonist. Hell, in this story, CJ wouldn't have gone to Cuba if it wasn't because of his husband. And this little trip will definitely impact their future.
I've warned a couple of binge readers that they should read the spinoffs and spin-ins no later than after CDMX. I've written 3 stories set in the future and I have one more planned. Aren't you impressed I've kept track of continuity even while jumping back and forth in time?
You're gonna have to wait until next week to find out.
But I think I should somehow have Jay and Northman meet. CJ better get used to people disliking him if he plans to run for office. No matter what he says or does, someone's bound to get pissed off. LOL
Even though this story qualifies as a novella instead of a short story, I still like tossing in a surprise or two. In Capitol Hill it was Clarence Thomas getting shot and Obama being appointed to the Supreme Court. Here's just a few gold coins and trinkets.
Those two will go diving every opportunity they take. As I mentioned before, I've tried to vary my descriptions. Tourists in Cuba can go swimming with bull sharks, but I already had them do that in a previous story. My solution was them finding treasure to keep it interesting..
Yeah, but you surf and I don't. Speaking of which, we need an extended scene with wolves surfing.
Florida has coral reefs and warm waters, so diving's a popular activity. That sense of peace I've described a couple of times is similar to what you get when you hold your breath and drop to the bottom of a swimming pool. Diving, you feel the water and whatever you touch, and you hear your heartbeat and your breathing. One of the most relaxing experiences I've ever had.
Hey Tony-
Oh, yeah... that's all property of the Cuban government.
FYI - The trident was a late addition to the story; it's there to keep the promise I made @drpaladin about featuring a trident in a response to a comment in Inked.
Five years after discovering the coin, Owen winds up wearing it around his neck. (see Flying Circus)
With the recent stories being so much about politics and CJ's plans to run for office, I try to keep each chapter from being all talk. Mixing in place, food, character, and action descriptions hopefully keeps it all from being too dry.
I thought it was a good twist. Fun to write and hopefully read, it helps me set the stage for future developments. I've written a bunch of scuba diving scenes and try to vary them all a little but that feeling of peace a diver gets when floating underwater's the common thread. This time, I pumped them full of adrenaline at the end.
