Winters in the Ottawa Valley is one of the most brutal experiences of my life. It is raw, and proves that Mother nature has a fury to her.
I explore more of that in Ottawa tales.
The three friends, Will, Lisa, and Jared are... staples thorugh the series. Lisa's about as non-stereotypical as I could get here. Jared is always a surprise in his utter loyalty to Will, and Will... Will's Will, he fucks up, stumbles and gets back up. I adore writing Will, such an easy character to write. That's the future Prime Minister of Canada, so enjoy him.
Just a warning Carter's Duty is VERY VERY VERY old, it started when I was a teenager, so... just it's rough. I keep tinkering with it and am never happy with how it came out. It is a transitional book from kids to adults... it has it's narrative place, just lower expectations, I was 14 when I started it.
if you are reading the Carter books:
Army>Vanguard>Shadow>Duty>War>Fortress>Recourse
then they switch to Andrew Carter books (more modern work, from last year)
Breach>Order>Run>Throne>Campaign
pretty much all the Merrickville stories started off with these books.
If you are interested in Theo's descendent, Carter's shadow. Peter McCormick is a standout character in that one.
Capt vs Goofball is fun, and a favourite of my readers, it features more Brian Higgins. And Steve is... Steve is a unique disaster of a good soul.
I am sure others here can give you more recommendations.
Chapter Five: Recurring Tremors
Finn
The bruise on his right hip was a secret geography, a private map of ruin.
It sat right on the sharp crest of the iliac bone, a thumb-shaped island of violet and sickly yellow. Every time Finn moved—every time he bent to pick up a socket wrench, every time the stiff denim waistband of his jeans rasped against it—it sent a sharp, electric jolt through his nervous system. A reminder. A receipt.
It should have been painful. It was painful
Brutal day today, I am located in the heart of a Yellow Snow warning (I know I know plenty of jokes abound)
Going to turn the heat up and enjoy writing something fun.
Chapter Seventeen: The Blood Bond
The boy’s name was Matty. He was young, with the thin, unfinished look of someone who had grown too fast on a diet of cheap carbs and anxiety. He had arrived at Flat 4B at 7:00 AM sharp, trembling so violently his teeth actually clicked together.
Kieran had opened the door, looked him up and down with dead, shark-like eyes, and pointed to the centre of the rug.
"Kneel."
Matty had knelt.
That was two hours ago.
He hadn't slept.
I honestly don't remember... they might, or at the very least, they run a micro-loan system that's keeping half the town afloat/employed in a recession. They own the law firm, I remember that. Ms. Patel of the eternally deadly pink pleather
To Clarify, Lydia and Steve Hickey own the entire intersection. The Tim Hortons. Steve's Steakhouse, the carwash, and Madam Chao's Nail Emporium. Read Capt. vs Goofball if you want to learn about Steve's inability to keep his chaos under control, and his Sister's ability to turn his money making schemes into a profitable Empire.
