At the end of the week, Gertrude was making final preparations for the start of her first year in high school, and Mum was busy making sure that the twins, Gertrude and Nick had everything that they need for the start of a new school year that would begin this coming Monday. When Monday did arrive, I arrived in the homestead early to help with preparing breakfast, so as to make things a little easier for Mum and Gran. Dad had taken Gertrude to her new school yesterday afternoon, and we heard

The following day while the McCulloch family were attending the funeral in Stranraer, I was making some calls on my mobile to make plans for some more sightseeing. Since we had interrupted our trip at Aberdeen, I decided that I would fly from Glasgow to Aberdeen, and resume my train journey from there to Inverness, which is only a 2 ¼ hour journey, where I would stay overnight and catch the next train to Glasgow. Once there, I would have a look around, and stay another night, hopefully I c

A few days later, as I returned to the house after the main morning chores, the telephone started ringing just as I entered. “Mull of Galloway Farm, McCulloch Residence, Lewis speaking” I said in a rush, while I was trying to remove my gumboots at the same time. “Lewis, this is Rose speaking, can I speak to Preston please” came the voice on the other end of the line, “I’m sorry Mrs… I mean Rose, Preston went back to University early last week, and Ronnie is back at boarding school, Mal and I are

Can I speak to Gran please Nicky, don’t take too long as this is long distance” I said to my brother, “Hang on and I will get her” Nicholas said as he put the phone down on the table to go and fetch her. I spoke to my grandmother for a few minutes, explaining the situation, that my friend’s family were in at the moment, and that I would be staying in South west Scotland for a while. “Very well, Lewis it’s good to know you are helping friends, and it will be good experience for you, make s

We went to bed early, since we have an early start in the morning, with the train journey to Aberdeen. The 2 ½ hour train journey was pleasant with lots of interesting changing scenery, when we arrived, we hailed a cab to take us to the backpackers, were we settled in and we rested for about half an hour before heading down to reception, to get a map of the city, and we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the city of Aberdeen. As the hours passed, Preston became more withdrawn, he tr

As I ate, I took the occasional look over in his direction, and as I was finishing my desserts, the young man saw me glance over at him, and I smiled and indicated for him to join me, at first he hesitated, but eventually he stood up, wiped his face with his shirt sleeve, and slowly walked over to the table where I sat. “G’day mate, please take a seat, would you like to join me for a cup of tea? My name is Lewis Grantham, from Australia” I said with a smile and I held out my hand, which had

“November 1941 – Lewis Grantham. Somehow the Australian Army have got wind of our tunnel construction, and have sent an Engineering Regiment, led by a Colonel to assist with designing and building the tunnels, plus the airshafts and bunkers, they have set up an Army camp behind the sheds, with lots of tents located in two long rows, it’s quite a sight to see.” There was a lot more notes about what was happening around the farm at this time, but I skipped those bits and started to read, we

The sand dunes start about fifty metres before the boundary fence, which is located at the bottom of a valley of dunes, which have scrubs growing on both sides of the dunes facing the boundary fence, to stop sand drifting onto the boundary. Walking along the top of the dunes, I looked around and could not find any sign of any concrete bunkers, until I walked down to the fence line and looked back, where I could see parts of the bunker peeking out of the sand. Walking up to the bunker, I n

Only the two far south western paddocks had not been burnt, and the firebreaks and sprinklers had kept the fire from jumping to the northern side of the property, with just embers being the cause of the fire at the house and shed. With the assistance of internet, and getting in touch with a wildlife rescue organisation, I was able to work out what I needed to do to look after and rehabilitate the animals, and I was kept busy with this. I was instructed by my father to keep the existence o

“Thank you for the introductions, who are you and your two friends?” the Princes asked, “Ma’am, my name is Otto, this is Max and Levi, we are the Swedish film crew recording this project, which I am happy to announce is now completed” Otto replied. “I see, and which two are the singers?” the Princess asked, “That would me, and young Alexander, your highness” Kyle responded. “How did the project go, were you happy with the project?” the princess asked, “Yes Ma’am, I guess we won’t know how it end

Although it was getting late in Western Australia, I hoped that Rev will answer her phone, as I dialled the house number on the farm. “Rectory, err I mean Deepdale Estate, Annette speaking” I heard a familiar voice say, “Hi Rev, sorry to call you so late, but I have a favour to ask you” I said happily. “Hello Sebastian, I hope you are taking great care of my son, over there” Annette said. “Yes, he is fine, I have just spoken to him actually, he is doing a little side trip for me, and will

The amount of rain was still a main concern, and with the reduced stock numbers, we have plenty of pasture, plus summer hay feed to keep our cattle well fed, while other neighbouring farms were beginning to struggle. For us we had no bank debt to worry about, we owned everything on the farm, and had some money saved for urgent or difficult times. By the time I came home at the end of the school year, summer had started just two weeks earlier, and already we have been having some very dry an
