It will take him a little more time to relax. Starting in the kitchen at the club will be a big help.

The background of the boys provides a level of understanding that would be difficult for an outsider to understand. Charles response to the shopping trip is normal for someone who had to do with the minimum. He doesn't want to offend Armand.

Charles's reaction isn't normal which supports his upbringing. At the stage he isn't working at the club, so he feels that he can't pay and only picked up the clothes Carl pushed on him. Even then, he on;y took one set. Carl did the rest for him.
