    Fallout

Thank you! It's partly due to my growth as a writer and partly the fact @Parker Owens drives me hard whenever there are difficult conversations around. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Interesting. In a way, friendship and anything more are equally alien to Eric. I suspect they're all in a dusty nook of his imagination marked 'impossible'. Friendship is the least impossible of the lot.

    Fallout

It's been some while since I last read any HG Wells. ๐Ÿคจ Eric can't help who he is to some extent but he didn't make any effort to improve his experience of the party. Is Rob being unreasonable? Maybe. Andy at breakfast is keen to remind him of Eric's weak points. They didn't stop Andy from leaving Eric to find his own way most of the time. They're all human, I think, is the point here.

    Evening Out

As I've said elsewhere, nobody comes out of that party head held high. Eric would be right to feel hard done by, but he doesn't help himself either.

Bloody authors! ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿ˜„ I've never pushed anything beyond friendship. I think readers have made assumptions based on what they'd like, rather than what I've written.

    Fallout

It's certainly not the calamity some were predicting but it's not back to normal. Andy and Eric haven't really covered everything that might've come out the party. At least they're talking again though.
  7. Propped up by his elbows, Rob sat at a strange table in an equally strange kitchen and blearily accepted both coffee and a plate of sizzling cholesterol from one of his hosts. Stirring, he sniffed appreciatively. Sausages, bacon, and some up-market accompaniments were definitely welcome. Whether his guts would be equally delighted was more of an issue, though Rob decided hunger pangs were a good sign. โ€œThanks. This looks great.โ€ Adam Partington sat opposite with his own plate piled high. โ€œW

I think that's right. The other three are much more experienced in navigating social events and going with the flow. It's the latter aspect that caused a lot of the issues. Although bear in mind, Felicity's 'rediscovery' was hardly predictable.

    Evening Out

Maybe, or maybe not. Eric doesn't like talking about his feelings, but perhaps this time is different. Some dark memories and emotions have been stirred up.

    Evening Out

You and pretty much anyone else who reads this chapter. It turns out to be the evening from hell for him. It's not through any malicious intent - more a series of mishaps and people getting caught up in other things. How's he going to take things from here?

    Evening Out

Yes, it's been a tension since the very beginning. The wine comment is a perfect example. Trouble is, that sort of question or conversation becomes automatic, said almost without thinking,

    Evening Out

Yes, but... I think is my response. When Rob arrived, Eric was off doing something else. It's understandable that Rob then took the opportunity to solicit work. Rob invited Eric to join him at croquet, though admittedly, he didn't exactly press Eric. Nobody comes out of this evening smelling of roses, Eric included.

    Evening Out

That's understandable. However, it's more difficult when they arrive at different times, plus the lads had their own private stuff to deal with. Maybe Eric could've joined in more - the croquet perhaps? Even only as a spectator or supporter.

    Evening Out

Yes, there hasn't been a set-back for quite a while. How he and the others respond to the fallout will be interesting.

    Evening Out

I don't think anyone comes out of this evening as well as they would like. His friends certainly, but also Eric himself. One way or another, they've let each other down.
  16. northie

    Evening Out

I think this is crucial. He lacks the basic means to navigate any party, even one as straightforward and unpressured as this.
  17. northie

    Evening Out

Yes, but don't forget that even a friendship is something rare and special to Eric, a man who's hardly had any friends during the course of his adult life.
  18. northie

    Evening Out

That's certainly how he sees it. Whether it's actually true may be another thing.

I've been regrettably lax in posting comments from my email correspondent. Here's his latest:
  20. Eric stared at the bathroom mirror, vainly twisting his body for a better view. The expensive blue of his fancy new jacket mocked him; his equally new, pristine white shirt only emphasised the rough, weather-beaten state of his skin. And his cack-handed shaving. Rob had done a great job with the trousers. The old man stilled, peering down at his feet. All that meant was his shoes, the only decent shoes he possessed, were visible in their jarring, mid-brown glory. It was best not to think about h

Thank you for your comments. It pleases me you mention this particular aspect. Being queer, but not cis, it frustrates me when authors make no effort to reflect at least some of the full spectrum of queer life. I haven't always, but nowadays I do try.
  22. A bumper chapter's coming up tomorrow. It's the housewarming party. A lot happens... ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿคจ

Hmm... I suspect Eric isn't too good at keeping secrets like that. And anyway, even if he knows, it won't stop Andy from being suitably impressed.๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, this isn't a story for thrills and spills. ๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿ˜„ Though I have improved from the first volume.
