In a brief lull before the lunchtime trade, Brian Metcalfe satisfied himself everything was ready. Fillings, garnishes, bread, all awaited the rush of orders. He'd even allowed Sandra to add home-made pea and ham soup to the day's menu. August was no protection against cool, wet and windy conditions. He eyed the floor and employed the mop again before more wet things deposited water everywhere. A moment spent with his head stuck outside revealed a shaft of sunshine and sounds of dripping.

I'm not sure 'impress' is quite the right word. Eric's getting new clothes primarily so he doesn't feel so shabby or disreputable in comparison with Rob. A rather different dynamic. 👀😄 Err... I imagine Eric would've backed off, never to return.

It's not the first time Eric's been told he'll be invited. It's almost as though he can't believe it as so puts it out of his mind. It's the first time he's thinking about something concrete like clothes.

It was from Felicity. If her husband had discovered the messages, I doubt whether Felicity would have had a phone still to reply with. True. Felicity doesn't seem to have reached that point yet.

This story has never really sugared the pill and Felicity's current life is one example of that. I don't set out to upset readers. Instead I'm turning a story into some semblance of life as we know it. There are good bits as well, as you noted. Expect a continuing mixture...
