    Chapter 39

Chapter 39 Back to Endicott – February 1996 A Month Later And the question is, was i more alive than i am now? I happily have to disagree; I laugh more often now, I cry more often now, I am more me – Peter Bjorn and John “I think we need to go up to Endicott some weekend and tell my parents that I want to go to Whitman next year.” “I heard ‘we’, so is that the only thing you’re going to tell them?” David asked, with concern in his voice.

    Chapter 38

I made Vice President Asher a little more circumspect about his homophobia than he probably would have needed in 1996. His actions are more 21st Century, I think, and he is trying to ensure that Micah won't sue Walla Walla College. In a way, 'get off this campus' is the more likely 1996 reaction, whereas 'are you sure you want to be here?' is the 21st century approach.

Chapter 38 Vice President Asher – January 1996 A Week Later “I’m Micah Kingman. I’m here to see Vice President Asher,” Micah said as he entered the office of the Vice President for Student Life. The grandmotherly secretary, whose name was Alice according to the placard on her desk, asked him to take a seat in one of the white plastic chairs arranged along the wall. He sat, setting his backpack down beside him. After five minutes he began to thumb through the magazines

Chapter 37 Retrieval – January 1996 A Week Later – in the New Year “Can I induce you to come with me to Seattle?” Micah asked. It was the next weekend after the New Year’s party. “What’s wrong? You don’t trust your crappy pickup?” “I trust it. I just want you to come – for moral support. Plus, your car really is more reliable – and comfortable.” “But, tell me, why do you want to really go to Seattle.” “I want to get a violin.”

    Chapter 36

Chapter 36 New Year’s Eve – December 1995 End of the Month The New Year’s Eve barn dance was scheduled to begin at nine outside town on a farm near the Oregon border. The large, open area under the rounded barn roof had been decorated with red and blue balloons and ribbons. The hay had been swept from the center of the room leaving an open wood-plank floor smoothed to a natural gleam with years of wear. Bales of hay had been moved along the walls to serve as seats and tables.

Chapter 33 Boccherini – May 1995 Two Months Later There comes a time you discover things, step out into life … step away and become yourself. You can’t bring anyone else to those moments. – A Map of the Harbor Islands, by J.G. Hayes The room had darkened as night fell outside. The low light near the table provided the only interior illumination; other light came from the streetlights that filtered slowly through the curtained windows and glowed acro

Breakdown – February 1995 A Few Days Later Things fall apart. The center cannot hold… The ceremony of innocence is drowned. – William Butler Yeats The phone was ringing. David looked at the red letters on his clock radio. It was just past 3 a.m. His roommate was sound asleep. David, though, felt the usual uncertainty, apprehension and fear when any phone rings at 3 a.m. He flipped his blankets back and walked across the room, hurrying, not knowing how long it had be

    Chapter 25

I didn't consider the Idanha school to be a school for troubled kids. Rather, it was a school for families who want their boys away from public schools and into a controlled, religious (likely) environment.

The boys’ shyness of the first days had worn off, and the typical teenage boys’ sense of discovery and adventure had taken over.
