  1. It's sometimes hard to refrain from editing while doing proofreading. As one solution during proofreading, put all edit suggestions in comment boxes when such suggestions cannot be suppressed.

    You left me.

    A nice twist.
  3. I've been running it now for about six months -- as a pre-release tester. It's done well. The only issues have been with an app or two that did not adapt early enough and some of the new ways of doing things, but the old ways are still available. In fact, it felt more like a normal Windows 10 update than anything particularly special.

    A Journal

I was led to A to Z after reading Double Concerto and its fine writing. I appreciate what you've done in both stories--the fresh similes and metaphors, the development of characters, the near-absence of cliches. Well done. I'm proud to be a fellow proofer for the GA anthologies and offer my help to you if you wish. rec
  5. I'd be happy to take a crack at it. I self-edited Palouse, so you can see my work. Also, Cole Parker's stories over at Awesomedude.com rec aka vwl

    Epilogue

Thank you, alexlittel. I enjoyed writing it, and after seven years just re-read it. It holds up. rec
  7. Bacon, yes. It's late summer and BLT season. With an heirloom tomato, tasty bread toasted, and crispy bacon. I can't resist the Kroger chains' (various stores around the U.S) thick-cut bacon from the meat counter or hard-to-find Beeler's bacon. [No commercial advertisement intended.)
  8. Over at AwesomeDude.com, a fine story by Nigel Gordon is beginning today--one I helped edit, by the way, to its end. The ex-wife dumps her gay teen-age son at her ex-husband's doorstep after a long estrangement from him. This starts significant changes in the ex-husband's life involving well-rounded characters. Highly recommended.

    Chapter 9

Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to be on a Thursday.
  11. It's Sunday, and I just noticed that my story was featured. Thank you, GA, and thanks to the readers for all the nice comments.

Thank you. Unfortunately, there won't be a sequel -- unless I can convince someone else to write one.

    Chapter 9

I have a couple of quibbles in an entertaining story. One, as mentioned above, Thanksgiving is on Thursday in the States, which means that the college break would start on Tuesday or Wednesday. Two, and probably a bit more serious, Walla Walla is in the dry part of Washington, so it, like Penticton but warmer, and has few rainy periods in the winter. Actually it's rather sunny and precipitation would come as snow that would melt away in a few days. Similarly, Colfax, which would also be dry and colder than Walla Walla. I set my story Palouse in the same area of Eastern Washington, though I come from the rainy, west side of the Cascade Mountains.

    Epilogue 2

It's always nice to get a compliment long after the story has been finished. Thank you.
  16. Yes, Happy Birthday.
  17. I understand the internal quandaries that authors face. However, the question I have is this: what outside help/pressure/support, if any, would encourage authors to finish their works?
  18. One of the better-known dialect phrases is, of course, milk shake, which contains ice cream in all parts of the country except upper New England where you have to order a frappe lest you get just milk with flavoring (presumably shaken).
  19. For those of you whose hardware doesn't support Windows 10, you might look to see if a firmware upgrade is possible. To see what firmware you have, there is a program at cpuz.com that provides mucho information about your hardware. Once you find the manufacturer, you can check their website for a firmware upgrade.

    I truly appreciate your comments.

  22. I need to update my information here; it's been several years now.
  23. I've been running Windows 10 on my laptop for several months now (as an evaluator). I've switched all my computers over to Windows 10 (from 8.1 and 7) To me, after several months, Windows 10 seems as stable as Windows 7 and not as off-putting as Windows 8 and 8.1. Since I use my computers in desktop mode, I found that Stardock.com's Start10 at $5 makes my startup screen look and operate almost identically to Windows 7 -- with the benefit that you can use the touch-screen opener menu if you choose it from the Start10 menu.
  24. I encountered a glitch to starting the upgrade on one of our computers when I clicked on the icon that Microsoft furnishes to call for the upgrade and said that Windows 10 was ready; a message came on that said something like 'preparing' and never stopped. To get around the problem, and based on a tip, I did a search for Windows Update, clicked on that and found the startup information that worked.
