    Hands of Shame

Ha, you're spot on with that, Valkyrie. Although it wasn't specifically said, the hint was that Travis used to snowboard a lot, when he had more time, when his dad was alive, etc. As for Ben's altercation with Katy in the woods, fear and repression can make people do crazy things, and his behavior was a split-second reaction to an inner conflict he's been repressing for a long time. You may be surprised with a few things still...

Thanks, Larry. Yeah, Ben's head is buzzing with uncertainty. Katy only makes it worse. Just when he thinks he can relax and enjoy the experience, something (or someone) slaps him back to reality.

    Hands of Shame

Thanks, Jeff, I'm glad to keep your interest going. As you've probably noticed, I don't like to spell things out. Things unfold one event, one layer, one moment at a time. Ben's feeling this sense of self-hatred because he can't justify his attraction to Travis with any sort of logic. And with Katy now threatening him, he feels even more determined to disavow the experience once it's over. But will it really be "over" for him...?

    Hands of Shame

They headed north from the ranch, veering off the main county road about half a mile on to follow a trail that wove up through a grove of leafless quaking aspen and Douglas-fir. The trail barely resembled a driving path at all, but Travis brought the Dodge Ram through the snow-packed terrain like a pro, keeping them upright and moving forward despite the steep incline and unevenness of the rise. Ascending higher, the snow on the trail thickened, and Travis kicked it into four-wheel drive. At one
  6. Hi Valkyrie, as always, you make me smile with your in-depth feedback and observations. There are some tumultuous moments ahead, and, no, Katy should never be discounted... As someone else mentioned earlier on, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned..." But it's all about how Ben and Travis weather the storm. (P.S. Thanks for the birthday wish!)

    Tubes

Have felt this way, too. You describe it well: crawling up your legs, enveloping you. Gets difficult to move by then. It's good to have someone - or something - that can pull you free of it.

    Chapter 5

Oh man, I know I'm way behind on reading this story, as I just recently came on board, but I want to pause to comment anyway. The friction between Dave and Jae was heightened by the impending fight they were preparing for, and it is ironic that Dave considered the fight-for-survival different in these two circumstances. However, learning that your partner has killed people, regardless of circumstances, can be jarring. I don't entirely blame Dave for his initial reaction, but he should have been a little quicker to make amends. Hopefully, he still can. Riveting chapter, tim.
  9. Thanks for your feedback, Larry. Glad to keep your interest going. No, it can't all be fun and games, but I won't provide any spoilers. ;-) Katy's complex... But then, so is everyone else. Tangled webs, tangled webs... Cheers-Mac
  10. That's exactly right - Ben can't fix it for Travis, even if his intentions are good. He may or may not be able to refrain from trying... As for teaching a straight guy... depends on the willingness of the pupil... ;-) Cheers, droughtquake. Thanks for all of your comments.
  11. Thanks for your comments, and for following along, Jeff. The complexities will fuel and form the relationship that's building between Ben and Travis. Glad to know that it feels (and reads) real to you.
  12. Glad for your patience and your kind words, tim! Much more to come.

More to be revealed. Thanks for sticking along with it, tim. :-)
  14. Morning crept in. Ben roused from sleep to the aroma of coffee and the sound of a dog barking a short distance away. From beneath flannel sheets, he stretched and yawned and reached an arm out across the mattress but found only an empty bed. Rolling up onto an elbow, he took a quick survey of the room through tired eyes. Noted that Travis was gone. The smell of sweat and cigarettes permeated Travis' pillow. Ben caught a whiff as he laid back down. Images from the previous night flung forwar

    Hypnagogic Dreams

Hi Gary, it is a little like a dance, isn't it? Some toes will get stepped on along the way, some moves will be out of sync, but the hope is that the players won't give up. As for Travis and his whiskey... that sentence was not written offhandedly. Glad it stood out to you. :-) Thanks for you comments, as always. Cheers.

    Hypnagogic Dreams

Hypnagogic dreams can be some of the most interesting dreams, because they teeter on the edge between your conscious and unconscious, real and surreal. Anyway, glad I could enhance your vocabulary with it. ;-) And I appreciate your analogy of the phonograph records. Fits well with the story. ;-) Thanks for the comments, droughtquake. - Mac

Not trying to tease, just hoping to keep you reading, Larry. Thanks for the feedback, I'm happy to hear that you can "feel" the cold, etc. like you're present in the story. And I love your take on the cold + Ben needing Travis' warmth. Spot on.

    Hypnagogic Dreams

They discovered Katy perched on the wooden swing that hung inside Travis’ enclosed porch. She was huddled with her knees tucked up under her chin, wearing a Colorado State sweatshirt that was several sizes too large for her and a pair of pink slipper boots. As Ben and Travis swooped in through the front screen door, she looked up at them with red, puffy eyes. To Ben’s surprise, Travis ignored her and stepped past her into the house, shutting the door behind him. Ben hesitated behind, feelin

    Ursa Major

Travis has had some hurt in the past, which we'll learn about. He's enthusiastic about Ben but also skeptical. He knows the stakes are high and that conflict is likely, which makes the encounter unstable. But maybe the bond they form will be strong enough to endure... TBD... Thanks Gary.
