Hmm, this story slipped right past me. Sorry about that, A. This is a powerful read. I admire short stories that drop the reader into the middle of a scene, show something important, then pull the reader right back out. What came before and what came after are important, too, but the stand-alone scene is enough. Brilliantly done, A. Thank you for writing/sharing it.

I was recently talking with a sub who was seeking advice on how to meditate better. Meditation can be accomplished in many ways. It doesn't require only sitting quietly with legs crossed, breathing deeply while trying to clear your mind of negative thoughts. An alternate method is to find an object, a talisman or fetish sculpture, something that you can touch and run your fingers over, smooth or with texture, up to you, and focus all of your concentration on that one object (eyes closed) for X amount of time. The energy derived from the totem helps center you. Anyway, this stress pony is the exact type of object for it. Glad it's helping de-stress you.

Unfortunately, it will likely take something extreme, like Children's Aid stepping in, perhaps the kids being temporarily removed, for the adults to get their shit together. But even then... it sounds like it's a pattern of their lifestyle.
