  1. So... as long as it's a happy ENDING, the rest of the story can be brutally sad? Asking for a friend.

    Sparks Igniting

Note to self: Readers seem to expect the first two PoVs to get married. Must work on subverting that expectation

    The Lieutenants

This whole war was pointless. More than that, the circumstances around the start of the war turn my stomach just thinking about it. I'm not going to say any more to avoid spoilers for other stories, but just know that any story featuring the Neko Rebellion is not going to be pretty.

    Mates' Comfort

It took a while to get this chapter out, but hopefully the next won't take two weeks to write. Lysander's going to be fun to write. He has issues that are bubbling up, and they need to be dealt with.
  6. The car pulled into the pack house near three in the morning. All three of Jordan’s passengers were asleep, snoring quietly as the human parked. The world around them was quiet, the wolves long gone to bed. It was a moment of peace, calm in their hectic lives, and Jordan just sat for a moment, enjoying the stillness. Until that stillness was pierced by a shrieking cry from the backseat. Damian and Lysander both bolted awake at Dylan’s call, the older neko quickly peering into the bassi

    The Lieutenants

PRIVATE ELLIOT "I have a deadly nightshade, So twisted does it grow. With berries black as midnight, And a skull as white as snow. A neko boy came over, Tried to drink my tea. He touched me without asking, Now he's buried 'neath my tree." Nonsensical rhymes filled his mind after nearly a week of constant shellfire. The pounding had already dulled away to a constant throbbing he barely noticed, and Elliot had quickly learned that it was r

    Sarelin Cats

PRIVATE ELLIOT, SIGNAL CORPS, 3RD REGIMENT OF THE ARMY OF SARELIN The lines were set. Elves hunkered in their trenches, just outside the range of Fort Naia. They had learned their lesson; the guns of the nekos were nothing to scoff at. The remnants of the Astaran Expeditionary Force’s camp outside Sarelin reminded them of how easily they had died, bombarded by weapons that no one ever dreamed could reach as far as they had. Elliot cowered under a dugout, listening to the sh

    Stalemate

Private Elliot is a bugler in the Queen's army, conscripted to help put down a rebellion of cats. Private Adya is an Ythin neko far from home, doing what he can to save lives. Both are flung head first into a war neither signed up for. Facing each other down over a stretch of murderous land, it will take a miracle for them to survive.
  10. “I don’t know why we couldn’t just take a boat back,” Reinard pouted, hustling to keep up with Galen. “We’re saving money, and I need to start walking more or I’ll start looking chubby. And while I love chubby tigers, I don’t really want to be one,” Galen said as they stepped onto a tall inclined bridge. He could hear the Faro grumbling, and Galen slowed down, not wanting to leave Reinard behind. He’d never hear the end of that one. The ocean rolled below them, waves rushing onto
  11. Six hundred gold. That’s what a forge went for in Absalom. It seemed expensive, but the building was larger than his shop back in Anuli. And it came complete with tools to work with. He would be making his own tools, as all good smiths did, but for now, they would do. Amnor Sen had to admit he was surprised at his fortune. The second shop he had gone to had been for sale, the owner trying to flee Absalom after giving a priest a shoddy weapon. She seemed insistent that someone was going to c
  12. New Year’s Eve. Normally a time of celebration for Lapis. But instead, he was dealing with supplicants. Again. At least most of his advisors were here, along with an unexpected guest. Jubilost had come to see this petitioner personally. Lapis fought the urge to look out the window. If he took one more glance at the snow that fell from the angry skies, he would not be able to resist the urge to run outside and start a snowball fight with any who would return his icy throws. “Your Grace!
  13. “Excuse me?” Lapis sighed quietly, hearing the incredulous tone of Kassil. He didn’t know how much clearer he could be. It had been two weeks since returning from their last expedition. He was itching to get on the road again, but there were things that needed to be done in Ismenia. He just needed to explain them to Kassil and Kesten. Again. “I want to build a kobold quarter in the western part of the city. You refer to Kiba as Consul Sootscale. It would go a long way toward cementing
  14. A village sat beyond the latest door, small and dilapidated. Jakun stared at the place, filled with bustling catfolk going about their business without a care in the world. In the distance, he could see a wall of dust rising into the sky, an army approaching the village swiftly. “Goblins,” Aofe provided. “At least a thousand of them. Your trial is to save the village.” “On my own?” Jakun frowned. His guide nodded. “You have an hour before they arrive. Good luck.” She van
  15. The fox stared at the meatball suspiciously, nose quivering at the scent of the cooked meat. He had no idea what this keftedes arni was, and Galen wouldn’t tell him. The table of the taverna was loaded with various fruits and vegetables that looked a lot safer, but Galen had insisted he try one of everything, if only for the reason that he was new to Egaran food. Reinard just knew he’d be eating Cnidarian balls at some point, though he would never say that to Galen. The tiger was enjoying t
  16. A pair of gauntlets sat on the counter, mithral blue shining through the filmy crust that tried to diminish their beauty. Faes stared at the metal gloves, silently admitting that they were a work of art, and that Lapis was right to track them down. They still needed to find the cuirass and the jaumbarts before the armour could be restored, but from what Lapis had told him, that was just a matter of returning the armour to a certain dwarf in Omestra. All they needed to do was settle on a pri
  17. Amnor Sen stepped into the small orphanage, his eyes adjusting to the low light within. He wasn’t sure exactly why he was here; he had just been walking blindly, thinking about Erith’s child. By some accounts, Erith hadn’t tried to cross the Chasm, she had fallen. It made no sense to the elf, and he tried to puzzle out her reasons. Bringing life into the world only to abandon it seemed a cruel fate for a child. The Safe Harbour, really nothing more than a cabin squeezed between two larger h

    Chapter 43

Actually, I think Cyn might be okay with it. He's definitely in tune with the natural world, and more than that, early in the story, he was very much survival of the fittest. It doesn't seem like it would be hard to convince him that hunting weaker deer would make herds stronger while still respecting the natural order and ensuring food for the wolf pack. Now if he realizes the wolves are basically hunting for fun, *THAT* might be an issue.

    Chapter 43

I would agree that an extra step during hunting is hard, but the way I see it, Eike isn't hunting at all. He is deliberately going out of his way to murder prey shifters. And he doesn't seem to be doing it very quietly. And when you think about how many pack can smell Cyn, and understand he's a shifter himself, not falling back on your smell in a hunt just seems rather suspicious. It seems like anyone on a hunt should be able to smell a shifter, unless they're nose blind. Which is a possibility.

    Chapter 40

DEVYN The door closed inches from his nose, and Devyn whimpered, backing away from the barrier. Silence took over the house, his brother’s scent slowly fading into the stench of his mother’s rage. “Get away from the door Devyn,” Margaret said finally. “Go get ready for bed.” The wolf’s whimpers increased, his paw scratching at the door in vain. His wolf door was locked, and he was stuck inside when he needed to be outside. Who knew what would happen to his brother? How was
  21. The fog faded in the morning sunlight. The air remained chill, winter well on its way, and Faes held back a shiver as they approached the grove. Falchos gave the group an appraising look, as though checking them for injuries. “So?” he asked. “The Scythe Tree is no more.” Faes replied. “May you finally know peace, my queen,” Tiressia said quietly. “You have earned your reward,” Falchos smiled, handing him a small chest. “Take it with our blessing and thanks.” Faes lifted
  22. “The following trials are philosophical in nature. You do not have to worry about losing, just follow your heart,” Aofe said as they passed through the latest door. The next room contained a pile of weapons and armour, a spellbook sitting on the top. Jakun could almost feel the magical energy pouring from the gear, and he wondered what it was doing sitting here. “You can take this gear if you’d like. There is nothing bad that would happen to you,” Aofe said. “But, I would strongly sugg
  23. The tiger crawled into bed beside Reinard, the fox staring blankly at a wall. It was far too early for them to go to bed; they’d barely been awake for fourteen hours, and he figured Reinard knew that. The Faro’s diaper was missing, and he was sitting naked on the bed, an invitation, or a challenge. Galen really didn’t know which, and he wasn’t in the mood to figure it out. “Look, I’m really sorry,” Galen murmured, his hand rubbing over the fox’s lower leg. “It’s something tigers do a lot, c

Calling Jordan off was hard, but it only would have made things so much worse. The three have to look out for each other and part of that is knowing when to kick ass and when to just take names.
