    Chapter 11

I awoke with a headache and, for the first time since my summer vacation had started, an empty side of the bed. I hadn’t slept well – as I predicted last night – but I still hadn’t come to any conclusions as to why Brett had acted the way that he did. I also thought the dinner we had had would cause the tension to die, but when we got back to my room it hadn’t. I flipped the covers down to my lap as I sat up and stretched out, trying to shake the tired feeling I had whenever I didn’t get a go

    Chapter 10

Finishing at the golf course left us with nothing to do before returning to the dock for lunch. Carl and Dad had finished their conversation about golf, but I was still thankful that they had found something to talk about at all. “Do you want to do something else?” I asked as we returned the golf clubs, thankful that I wouldn’t have to embarrass myself anymore. “No, we should go wait at the dock,” Dad answered as he walked away, motioning for Carl to follow him. Carl turned in our direc

    Chapter 9

I was the first to awake the next morning. Brett’s arm was lying over my waist. Turning to look at him, I saw he was facing me, a slight smile playing across his lips as he slept. I didn’t want to wake him, so I turned and stared at the ceiling, not bothering to move his arm away. As Brett leaned against my chest I felt the tension leave me. I was no longer longing for physical contact and he seemed completely relaxed. I reckoned this was the first time he had been really relaxed when it came

    Chapter 8

Waking up I heard the shower running in the bathroom. I looked over at the digital clock and saw that it was early. It was hours away from breakfast and I didn’t know why Brett would be moving around to get ready. I knew he hadn’t taken a nap last night like he said. They always changed the sheets when they cleaned, but the sheets were still the same light floral blue from the last time they had changed them. Nothing else had been done in the room either, but I didn’t want to talk to Brett

    Chapter 7

I woke up with sharp pains rushing to my head, my mind spinning with cloudy thoughts, as the sun rays caused me to squint and look away. I didn’t know what time it was; but I just realized that I had drunk more than I had thought when I had gone to sleep last night. When my eyes focused I looked over and saw that the bed beside me was empty. Looking at the floor I noticed Brett had moved his clothes. And, when I looked for my own, I saw that they were neatly folded on the hotel room table.

    Chapter 6

Getting dressed and looking myself over in the mirror I seemed out of place. I wasn’t the night scene type of person that Brett loved to be. Kat seemed like she needed to step away from the yacht and I agreed with her. It seemed that we’ve become too confined to one area and we all needed to stretch our legs a bit. “You’re not wearing that are you?” Brett asked and I turned to look at him. “What’s wrong with this?” I asked as I stood there and waited for his complete verdict. “There a

    Chapter 5

Waking up to movement in the bed was something I was just getting used to with Brett sharing the bed with me a lot recently. It was nice having someone laying next to me, waking up in the middle of the night having them snuggling closer. I hoped to find someone like that soon I was getting tired of being alone. I couldn’t blame it on work anymore as I was used to my job. Now it was just my own apprehension with who I was holding me back. Brett had been pushing me to go out with him and I di

    Chapter 4

“Wake your lazy asses up,” Kat said as I felt the covers being ripped off of me. This was the first time that Kat ever woke me up. She normally would leave me alone altogether so I welcomed the intrusion. Opening my eyes I saw her looking over the both of us clad in our underwear so I grimaced and placed the pillow over my crotch. “Good morning,” I said, “what are you doing though?” “Waking you two up,” she said dropping the cover to the floor. I turned to see Brett completely oblivious,

    Chapter 3

I woke up to the sound of a bell ringing and when I looked toward the door one of the butlers was holding up a bell and was looking us over. It was how Mom used to wake me up when I had over slept for breakfast. “Will someone answer that fucking phone?” Brett grumbled grabbing his pillow and shoving it on top of his head. It only made the butler ring the bell again. “It’s ok sir, I’ll wake him up,” I said waving my hand. The butler left and I looked down at Brett with his head covered.

    Chapter 2

Waking up to a person shaking me was annoying. When I looked up and saw Brett standing over me I knew that I had overslept. I normally leave an hour before he has to be awake, but he was already dressed in his gear. “You can stop shaking me, I’m up,” I said and that’s when I noticed that he looked shaken up, “what the hell happened?” “I got a phone call this morning,” he said and I sat up on the bed. He sat down on it then leaned back. “Did something happen back home?” I asked fearing

    Chapter 1

I always looked forward to coming home after a long day at the office.. Home was an apartment that I shared with my roommate Brett. We had been college roommates and became best friends during the five years it took the both of us to get our degrees. We were completely different, but that never stopped us when it came to getting along. I wouldn’t have survived moving to California if I hadn’t met Brett. I could hear the music blasting from our apartment when I pulled into the parking lot an

About best friends from college. Brett and Will are totally different, but will they find out that, that is what makes their friendship so special? They definitely have the summer to figure it out, Will is going back home to visit his parents and taking Brett with him. First posted around year 2004.

    Chapter 22

I never expected to fall asleep that night, I was too nervous and tense about the next day. I didn’t know what time I fell asleep, but I was surprised to wake up in plenty of time to get dressed for the event at church. At first I thought I was the only one awake, but when I walked down stairs I saw that Grace and Mom were in the living room. Grace was being fed something pureed from a small glass jar absently because Mom was looking over contents in a vanilla folder. I didn’t know if it wa

    Chapter 21

Saturday I woke up a little past noon, I hadn’t realized I stayed up that late worrying about a surprise. A surprise that I would no doubt enjoy. I was also surprised that Mom had let me sleep that long on a Saturday. I was also a bit disappointed that Jonathon hadn’t stopped by yet. He probably wouldn’t be able to sneak out of the house though, he was still grounded for the fight he had with Matt. I was curious what he did in that house during the day though, on days he didn’t have anythin

    Chapter 20

Jonathon had to steady me by grabbing hold of my shoulders and he looked at me, then through the open front door. My family were in the living room, Stacey on the couch, her eyes puffy and red from crying and Mom was hovering over the living room, her arms crossed with some of her red hair falling out of the tight bun she put it in before she headed off to work every morning. They all turned to look at me, Dad looked sick, like he was about to vomit his hands twitching nervously at his sides.

    Chapter 19

Most of the day I was spared by the classes I had. In English I ignored Matt, it was usually Jonathon who started the conversations in there anyway. I was also surprised that I had missed a quiz on the book we were all supposed to be reading and listening to. The last two days, I wondered just how much I missed, I didn’t think it would be a lot in the slow moving town, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to make up the quiz. Matt didn’t want to talk to me anyway, he had opened the book as soon as

    Chapter 18

It was dark and I had been in bed, almost asleep when Stacey came into my room and nudged me. It scared me at first, thinking there was something wrong with her. She was frowning, but then she pointed to the window where the goldfish Jonathon had won and given to me was sitting. “He has no sense of direction, he’s been throwing pebbles at my window,” Stacey groaned, “go talk to him so I can get to sleep.” “What?” I asked sitting up in the bed. “He’s outside right now?” “Yeah,” she answered

    Chapter 16

Jonathon shut the door behind us and Stacey was lying on the couch eating from a pack of crackers. It was weird seeing her so relaxed at home. She had been pretty absent around here since we moved, finding Adam’s presence more appealing than our house. She took one look at me though and rolled off the couch, dropping the pack of crackers on the floor. “What in the world happened to you?” Stacey asked through a full mouth. I squinted at her, wondering if she’d believe the lie Jon

    Chapter 15

I didn’t sleep much last night, but I was startled by my alarm clock all the same. I didn’t drag myself out of bed like a person should after not sleeping that well, but my feet hit the floor and I beat Stacey to the bathroom easily. She didn’t have time to complain either as I took a quick shower. Then realized in my room while I was dressing for the day, I couldn’t speed up time. I was worried about Jonathon and forced myself not to call him last night. We had a plan in place if something

    Chapter 14

Jonathon was shaking, as he got dressed, not caring that he was still dripping wet from the creek water. The sun was still intense, but a slight breeze was blowing in the forest around us. It wasn’t cold though and the wide directionless stare he had given me told me that he was scared. He also wouldn’t tell me who he thought it was or if he saw anything at all. I didn’t notice anything; we had been kissing at the time. “It could’ve been a deer or something,” I said in another

    Chapter 17

The next morning my alarm clock didn’t wake me up. It was because someone had turned it off, I started scrambling to my feet but realized there was no use. It was already past the time for the bus to run. No one had bothered to wake me up or check on me, so I started to worry that Mom and Dad really had meant to take me to the doctor and get my injuries documented. I breathed a sigh of relief when I looked out my window and saw the driveway was empty. They had both left for wor

    Chapter 13

After getting home I was afraid that Mom would corner me into the living room to interrogate me. I had already told her what happened, but she’d want me to replay every little detail, like a detective. She would also be reading my reactions to things, something over the years I tried to mask, but she always seemed to guess right. I wondered if they took lessons on this sort of thing, but thought my mother would do more good in the world as an investigator instead of a therapist.

    Chapter 12

Sunday morning arrived too quickly. Mom still had the notion of pleasing her patients with reports from church. Landfalls was a quiet, wholesome type of neighborhood. It did seem the teenagers were outgrowing it though. Mom blames television for that. Stacey refused to go, but she was sitting cross armed in the van next to me. I was looking out the window not really looking forward to hearing how bad of a Christian I was. How much I was living for the day instead of for eternity.

    Chapter 11

It was cold in the morning when I woke up and there was a thick fog in the air. I knew it was early, as there was still a blue twilight look in the forest. Dew had also settled on us both, giving a damn feel to our clothes. Jonathon and I had separated in the night sometime as we woke up on opposite ends of the wooden plank we slept on the night before. “Jonathon are you awake?” I asked as I stretched trying to get the stiffness out of my body from sleeping on a hard surface. Jonathon onl

    Chapter 10

Getting off the bus I rushed up to the door and unlocked it. I dropped my bad at the door with a loud thump as the books hit the hardwood floor. I walked up the stairs and into my room to see my tux on my bed still in the dry cleaning bag. Mom had dropped it off during her lunch hour. When I was dressed I stepped across the hall to the bathroom to look my self in the mirror. I sprayed some cologne on my tuxedo then straightened out the red vest before I left the bathroom. Before I left t
