  1. Some good analysis here, and some interesting questions. Education is not a priority with his money, especially today when a university degree is no passport to a job. Anyone can work in MacDonalds,
  2. Raul School plodded along while Mort became increasingly introverted. The only thing he enjoyed was woodwork where he was making an elaborate small table with turned legs and complicated inlay. His reputation with staff members had taken a dive and he was treated with wary suspicion in case he also made fools of them by exposing their inadequacies. He was learning that the life of a truth teller is a lonely one. One evening after eating boiled rice and beans with raw greens and fried egg
  3. Thanks for the vote of confidence - rest assured my tale will remain well and truly attached to the rest of me.
  4. Gosh, Skyacer, you offer so many possibilities I'm wondering if I ought to rewrite the rest of the story - perhaps I've got it wrong... oh dear ... decisions, decisions... why is nothing ever simple?
  5. Wesley, I'm getting the feeling you're not too keen on Mortaumal's Mum. That's not very nice.
  6. You have excellent taste, Jeffrey - as well as a brilliant mind. Mort doesn't think his birth was anything to celebrate. [For other reasons entirely, I've always avoided having birthday parties - never had one in my entire life - and if I have anything to do with it, I never will have one. Either every day is worth celebrating - or none is.]
  7. The school term dragged on, more or less problem free apart from Social Studies, taught by Mr. Preggy, who didn’t conceal his belief that Anglo-European culture and civilization was superior to all others. Unwilling to argue with the man and thus create problems for himself, Mort kept his mouth shut. Sometimes he felt as if his blood was about to boil in his ears and spurt over his desk, so angry he became, especially when the teacher made crude jokes about the tragedy of all the refugees fleein
  8. You have a cruel streak, Wesley. Don't you feel pity for her - after all she is a woman alone against an uncaring male-dominated world. If she doesn't look after herself, who will?

I'm pleased you like Mort, he is an engaging fellow - and fortunately blessed with a rational as well as an empathetic mind, so he doesn't waste energy on what might have been , but on the present moment - which is all we have, really - while treasuring memories. Rest assured, he will eventually escape Perdita's clutches.... but will he survive?
  10. It's Han not Hans. Perdita's gaoler is her lust for filthy lucre. The answer to all your intelligent questions is an unequivocal.... dunno.
  11. Rake? that's a new one. She lives in torment, Wesley. Ever more furious that she hasn't got her inheritance. It is eating away at her insides - surely that is punishment enough?
  12. Sport? Sport? Nine men sitting on their fat arses while two play at hitting a ball and running up and down between three sticks! while another eleven stand around and wait for a catch. Seriously, I'd sooner watch grass growing. Perdita's waiting because she's too dumb to work out a way of eliminating him without being done for murder. Furthermore, She has no idea if she will inherit, and is now frightened of her recalcitrant offspring, having seen his fighting ability. Surely we should all feel sorry for the poor lass? Alone in this male dominated world where all the cards are stacked against the soft, sweet, motherly gentle sex?
  13. The Gympie Road led them towards the City Centre; a bypass tunnel took them to a bridge over the river, which they crossed. Ten minutes later Perdita parked at the rear of an estate agent’s office. ‘Wait here.’ Mort got out and stretched his legs. The parking area was separated from the equally depressing back yards of other small businesses by rusty wire fences. The service road behind the office boasted scraggy trees behind which skulked a row of weatherboard houses built in the ninete

I also used to read fairy tales with magic lanterns, enchanted rings, secret passages - E Nesbit was my favourite author as a ten year old. Oswald Bastable & Others my favourite book - for a short time. Elbert was a noble prince who would never have accepted Mort's inheritance... Perdita is truly a lost woman... but sharp and hard as nails - I like the elevator analogy best.

But Canuk... Elbert had accidentally stuffed up his life and preferred to die rather than become a drug trafficker - be happy he is our of his misery. Once you're involved with the 'big bad boys' you're better off dead. Indeed your command of la franchise m'étonne mais, je crois q'il doit être - tout à été fucké. .

Forgiveness, Okiegrad. Don't you believe in redemption? We let the baddies live so they can destroy themselves through their own evil ways... none of them are happy, so alive their torment is never ending - they exist in the prison of their personalities - never satisfied, unable to love and unloveable - every whim indulged and everything to excess so nothing to look forward to... [Goodness, I do rave on don't I?]

Perdita staggered in at first light, showered, then collapsed onto the bed beside Mort who pretended to be asleep. She rolled over and he tried not to gag on her breath before sliding out and showering, dressing and going down to breakfast. Perdita snored softly. When he returned she was up and about, looking as fresh as boiled lettuce. ‘I brought you some croissants and a coffee.’ ‘Put them over there. Are you packed? We leave in five minutes.’ She downed the coffee, tipped the

No need to be embarrassed, Okiegrad, appreciation of high quality goods is laudable! It surely isn't taboo to be attracted to a smart, intelligent honest lad? That would be crazy. Yes, he has already wrapped me around his finger, which is why I had to tell his tale... Worry not, in this highly moral tale everyone gets what they deserve.

I'm so pleased - and relieved - to have my mind compared to a well rather than a cesspit - wells are usually potable at least.- Dark subterranean swirls of chaos.... --- you are a poet, sir,

Oh, very well put - couldn't agree more - I'd add 'Sociopathic' to the list.

Mortaumal doesn't kill anyone - he leaves it to them to suffer the consequences of their actions. She has only the one husband - the rest were all casual sex partners.
  24. It's always a pleasure to encounter a like-minded man! Thanks Timothy for commenting.
