You have excellent taste, Jeffrey - as well as a brilliant mind. Mort doesn't think his birth was anything to celebrate. [For other reasons entirely, I've always avoided having birthday parties - never had one in my entire life - and if I have anything to do with it, I never will have one. Either every day is worth celebrating - or none is.] -
The school term dragged on, more or less problem free apart from Social Studies, taught by Mr. Preggy, who didn’t conceal his belief that Anglo-European culture and civilization was superior to all others. Unwilling to argue with the man and thus create problems for himself, Mort kept his mouth shut. I'm pleased you like Mort, he is an engaging fellow - and fortunately blessed with a rational as well as an empathetic mind, so he doesn't waste energy on what might have been , but on the present moment - which is all we have, really - while treasuring memories. Rest assured, he will eventually escape Perdita's clutches.... but will he survive?

Sport? Sport? Nine men sitting on their fat arses while two play at hitting a ball and running up and down between three sticks! while another eleven stand around and wait for a catch. Seriously, I'd sooner watch grass growing. Perdita's waiting because she's too dumb to work out a way of eliminating him without being done for murder. Furthermore, She has no idea if she will inherit, and is now frightened of her recalcitrant offspring, having seen his fighting ability. Surely we should all feel sorry for the poor lass? Alone in this male dominated world where all the cards are stacked against the soft, sweet, motherly gentle sex? -

I also used to read fairy tales with magic lanterns, enchanted rings, secret passages - E Nesbit was my favourite author as a ten year old. Oswald Bastable & Others my favourite book - for a short time. Elbert was a noble prince who would never have accepted Mort's inheritance... Perdita is truly a lost woman... but sharp and hard as nails - I like the elevator analogy best.
