You're a bit tough on Leo I reckon. Mort sure is into the woods, will he find the pathway out? Not for some time I fear...

Have you any examples of people like Clive who have been genuinely redeemed? Mort would certainly have drowned. The Head Teacher - like Bishops and all other leaders of organisations, see their role as protector of their 'empire', therefore they shoot whistleblowers and cover up wrongdoing in case they end up in the poo. It's human nature. Usually they get away with it. She dislikes the young upstart intensely and would love to get rid of Todd too, but has to have him for the older boys. And Mrs Petty's lies have taken root... Catastrophes happen to people less self-sufficient and rational than Mortaumal. He's an island of sanity in a sea of hysteria - I hope.

Yes, it dopes seem that death stalks him - but it's always the evil guys, so perhaps there's more in a name - all names - than we suspect. Now Wesley - wasn't he a wandering preacher of almost Calvinistic fervour?

A Visit The following evening, Mort and Leo pushed Fystie in his wheelchair to Todd’s place. They maintained a brisk jog for the entire four kilometres and twenty minutes after setting off were knocking at the door of a pseudo Spanish villa surrounded on three sides by a high paling fence. They had barely caught their breaths when a utility truck pulled up and a rangy, deeply tanned man of about forty in heavy work boots, skimpy shorts and dark-blue singlet got out, slammed the door and boun

    School

Rigby Taylor posted new chapter in Mortaumal

Mort practised his spiel on Fystie during their short walk to school. ‘Reckon she’ll be convinced?’ ‘You’re a born con man.’ ‘Thanks, and pushing you to school every day in this thing will make me as fit as Leo, so one day everyone will want to watch me dance naked like him.’ ‘You’re already fit and he doesn’t dance naked.’ ‘Almost. Have you seen his pouch?’ ‘I helped him make it.’ ‘Great! Then you can help him with the one he said he’d make for me. Here we are, which way

Mmmm... Leo is complicated - doesn't really understand himself, I suspect. You are right about how children react. Mort's apparent naïveté is due to following his grandfather's injunction to be polite and always question [internally] everything that doesn't seem right. A polite, questioning child seems innocently ignorant, whereas their brains are seething away underneath as ignorance is replaced by understanding. Thanks for commenting

One prediction right, one not so right Yes, Fystie loves being in water - prefers the tepid baths.

Leo and Hugh As his head didn’t hurt, despite the stitches, Mort couldn’t see why he should remain in the Gymnasium staffroom. Fystie had once explained the layout of the place, so he set off to see if he could find the spot where he could see and not be seen when Leo was performing. It wasn’t difficult. Loud dance music led him to a door that opened into a small area shielded from the main space by movable screens. He peeped around the edge and discovered he was directly behind the stage on

Do you have a crystal ball, Skyacer? Or are you a seer? What will Mort do indeed? That's for me to know and you to find out if your predictions are accurate.

I agree wholeheartedly - and if teachers were paid more, better teachers would be attracted to the job. Don't worry - Mort's a tough little cookie.

You don't think having the whole school know she was pissed on is sufficient punishment? It sure pissed her off. People in precarious circumstances are wise to avoid the law, it has a habit of biting the victim. It wouldn't be difficult for Mrs Pettie to convince a magistrate that he should be placed in a correctional institution.

There are no coincidences, Wesley. Life is organised chaos. ....or so some people think.

Dying Shrude sagged to the ground, coughing slightly. ‘Grandad! Are you all right? Thanks for sending that horrible woman away. Are you alright?’ ‘Just a little tired, Mort. I’m not used to confrontation. A person like that is a great black hole that sucks all joy, life and decency from the air. Its lucky she went or I’d have suffocated. Perhaps you’d fetch me a glass of water?’ Shrude rallied and after a meal seemed to be his usual self, but Mort remained worried. ‘Grandad,

Confidences After a healthy and satisfying supper they relaxed on the verandah, the boys sharing a swing seat and talking softly while keeping their ears pricked, the men on rattan armchairs, and Nasturtium gurgling away on pillows on the deck. The pleasure both Shrude and Leo felt at discovering a like-minded soul, triggered confidences they thought had been well and truly buried. Having noticed the absence of all references to Fystie’s mother, Shrude approached the subject obliquely. ‘

Really, Wesley! You make it sound as if I'm a death merchant. Revelling in gore. I'm glad you don't feel pity - proves you're a rational man - like me.

That's a relief. I worry that I rave on too much about ideas and repeat myself in each book. I've just hacked 500 words off the next chapter for that reason. So if you can forgive the occasional polemics I think you'll enjoy the life of Mort. Thanks as always for your compliments.

Mortaumal According to his grandfather, Mortaumal was a smart kid. According to Mortaumal, Simon was a brainless bully. So why wasn’t it Simon lying on his belly, face pressed into the dust scarcely able to breathe? Surely twice as clever should outsmart twice as big? But the world isn't as we would like it, which was why Mortaumal had endured months of increasingly unpleasant torment. He'd hoped that yesterday’s flushing of his head in a toilet would satisfy his torturer for a while, but it

    Mortaumal

Rigby Taylor posted a story in Fiction

Mortaumal is a light-hearted tale about death and dying, affection and indifference, independence and love, somewhere in tropical Queensland. Mortaumal gets himself into and out of very hot water while learning to defend himself both physically and mentally in a fast paced romp in which there’s sentiment but not sentimentality, social criticism, excitement, fun, and a bit of everything else.

That's a relief, Canuk, to know you approve of my heroes' actions. I hope you also approve of my next hero's actions as he wends his way under, through, over and around the hurdles of life.
