I once read a description about the different types of stories that I've used ever since. Consider a room. A short story illuminates one item in that room, while giving hints of what else is around. A novel illuminates the entire room, showing the reader what there is to be seen. A truly great novel illuminates not only the entire room, but also the world outside. That's what I try to do with my short stories -- illuminate a single thing and give hints of what else could be around.

It's more manageable now than it used to be, but, yes, it's a horrible disease and those that know they have it and do nothing to stop its spread are... well...
