Thank you! Sadly, there are too many elements in the story that are drawn from real life. I remember reading a newspaper article many years ago about the street boys in St. Kilda, and how the locals would support them, like Mrs. K. did in the story. That was before I wrote New Brother, but it stuck in my mind and I used it as part of that story, and then expanded the scenario out to write this one.
It was inspired by a couple of 'end-of-the-world' novels that I'd read. One involved a space colony, like this one, and the other involved an underwater colony. In both cases, they needed to be isolated from the rest of (dying) humanity, and that has a psychological impact that can be devastating.
I'm personally very cynical when it comes to politics and politicians, but there are a few whose integrity and consistency I've admired. Sadly, they never seem to end up in positions of influence.
Thank you!
Back in Leopard Skin Cover it was mentioned that Ty was a leader. Even though he hadn't been with the club for very long, there was a comment from one of the other players that his opinion could sway up to half the team on matters of importance.
As for your comments on parents, sadly it's true. Someone I worked with once told me that his mother had never accepted he's gay. In all other respects she was his mother and loved him, but in that one area....
Believe it or now, but I've never been a great one for watching sports, either. I used to enjoy playing, but I didn't like watching Writing this story has made me more interested in football than I've ever been in the past!
Thanks, Timothy!
Jim hasn't really been in a stress situation with respect to being gay since he came out. He received some verbal abuse at one match, but otherwise there's been nothing that has been reported. If, however, he's isolated and put in an even mildly hostile environment, how will he react? Tony doesn't know, and he doesn't want to find out.
Brandon smiled across the table at Neil. “Come on, Neil, it’ll be fun. We’ll make sure you have a good time. Trust us.”
Eric nodded as he reached over and put a hand on top of Neil’s. “We’ll take good care of you, honey. You won’t have to worry about a thing.”
Neil slipped his hand free, using the pretext of taking a sip of his coffee. The three were at a small coffee shop just around the corner from Pride FM, where Neil had been working for the last two weeks. Tony had arranged for him to be
There's a genre for Romance, and there are plenty of stories posted in GA Stories. Use the Advanced Search feature to pick that genre and then any other criteria you like (such as tags, status, and/or length) to narrow the choice. I can't remember exactly for when I turned 18 (the legal age here) or 21, but it was probably Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf. That was my favourite record from about the age of 16 onwards for several years. I used to play it with the headphones on, sitting on the floor of my parents house in the corner of the living room where the sound equipment was located. There wasn't a single song on that album that I didn't enjoy.
Thank you!
The draft is at the end of November, while the story is currently late June. It'll be a few months before the draft happens and, as you've seen so far, a lot can happen in a few months
Peter scowled, his frustration showing. “What the hell is the brat up to? He’s not paying attention.”
“He seems more interested in his opponent than the game.” Will frowned. “He’s also bumping and jostling the guy more than I usually see him do.”
Julie checked the opposition-player list. “That’s Craig Roach. Does the brat have a history with him?”
Peter grimaced. “I heard rumours through some friends that the two had a run in when they were both on the state squad, but I’d discounted it. I th
One compound subjects, I've had editors disagree on how to manage possessives.
A. We drove to Matt and Paul's house, or
B. We drove to Matt's and Paul's house.
I like the questionaire in the post, because the first example shows the complexity. I believe 1A is correct because it's "use" that's the subject, which is singular -- the types of objects being used is descriptive and for clarification and are not the subject. Am I right?
Thank you! Yes, things can get a little...complicated. I'm ashamed to admit that it was only when I was writing this part of the story that I realised Ty, Deon, and probably Charlie and Jarrod would know people who were drafted into the AFL. All of them played in the TAC Cup the year before, and the majority of draftees still come that competition (though a significant number also come from the equivalent competitions in other states). Last year it was 45 draftees from Victorian TAC Cup teams.
Try thinking about the parents reasons for being homophobic in the first place. Neil's father was ignorant and confused homosexuality with paedophilia. He's being educated on the difference and what homosexuality really means. Neil's mother, on the other hand, has a religious belief in homosexuality being wrong. That's harder to change.
Sorry about the withdrawal symptoms but I can't post any faster. I still haven't finished writing the story (though I'm getting close) and I need to keep the pace of a chapter a week to make sure I can stay far enough ahead that I can still post regularly.
