    Chapter 16

“All rise,” the bailiff said, and the judge called the courtroom to order. Travis was half asleep, thanks to insomnia caused by a combination of nervousness and the side effects of Dr. Hu’s treatment. It had been a week since school ended, and he’d had his first dose. The first two days after the injection, he had little energy and slept most of the time. Then he couldn’t sleep more than two hours at a time due to the migraines and nausea. “Mr. Turner, I asked you a question,” the judge sai

    Chapter 15

@Dan South You didn’t miss anything. His grandmother being the richest person in the world wasn’t brought up before because it wasn’t relevant to him. She’s just Grams to Travis. But that issue does come up again later with Giovanni, and when Grams comes to visit and she gets into an argument with Travis’s mom (her daughter), whom she disowned.

    Chapter 15

Though Abigail had prepared him for this moment, his stomach gurgled as the bailiff swore him in. The water pitcher next to him trembled. “Calm down,” he told himself, taking a series of deep breaths. The water pitcher stilled, and he heaved a sigh of relief until DA Waterson started in on him. “Travis—is it okay if I call you that?” “Yes, sir.” “As I was saying, Travis, would you say you have an anger problem?” He nibbled at his thumbnail as he thought about how to respond.

    Chapter 14

@Dan South lol, guilty as charged. And no, he won’t burn down the witness stand, but he does send a water pitcher flying.

    Chapter 14

Dr. Hu roused Travis from his sleep. “Come on. I have news to share,” he said, smiling. Travis grumbled about it being too early but followed him to the kitchen, where Jenny was making coffee while Agent Anderson fried up bacon and eggs. Once they’d eaten, Dr. Hu called their attention. “I have news about Travis’s condition.” Travis swallowed the lump in his throat, trying not to let his nerves get the better of him. “My colleagues and I have been analyzing your blood samples, a

@drsawzall Yes,lol. Travis might think he knows everything but his ego will be his ultimate undoing. @Dan South Fear not. Giovanni will appear soon.

    Chapter 13

Travis took Oblivion’s advice and binge-watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, taking notes. It helped keep his mind off his impending trial, but between that and everything else, it was like he was drowning. And the only thing that calmed him was cutting himself. He knew it was wrong, but at the moment, it felt right. And he would have gone on mutilating himself like that had Jenny not spotted the dried blood on his basketball shorts one weekend at Dr. Hu’s cabin. He was beyond ashamed when

    Chapter 12

@drsawzall They have their good and bad sides. But make no mistake, Oblivion’s endgame is manipulating Travis into jumpstarting Armageddon.

    Chapter 12

While Travis slept, Pro took control of his body, using it to teleport to his favorite hangout, a seedy bar on the east side of Detroit called Booker’s. It was located in what used to be a warehouse, and you could only get in with a password. “Roughriders,” he said at the door, and the bulky bouncer nodded, then patted him down before letting him in. He’d heard about the place from an online message board about underground fights, and his first trip to Booker’s almost cost him his ass.

    Chapter 11

Over the next few days, Travis and Giovanni went back and forth on edits for their paper. Travis wanted to stick to the themes of alienation and societal norms, while Giovanni wanted to go with the theme of identity and how that related to marginalized groups. They compromised and combined their themes for a paper on how the monster represented the other, while the townspeople represented society and the systems of institutional racism and other forms of discrimination inherent within it. @VBlew it’s only fair as JJ did throw the first punch, but Travis doesn’t fair much better in his trial.

    Chapter 10

JJ huffed as his mother applied rouge to his cheeks. “I look like a fifth-grader.” “That’s the point,” she said. “Studies show that the younger a person looks, the more likely they are to receive a lenient sentence.” He straightened his tie, brushing the hair out of his eyes. “Ugh, let’s get this over with.” Mrs. Giovanni gave his cheeks a final brush and deemed him ready for court. In the weeks since his fight with Travis, JJ had been to court multiple times as the district attor

    Chapter 9

A balding man with a rotund body and beady eyes entered the room and introduced himself as Dr. Richard Hu. “Travis, I’m sure you have questions, but—” “Doc, I thought we agreed not to tell him about you know what?” The suited man that Travis assumed was Agent Anderson asked. Oblivion was right. What else are they hiding from me? A cobra of anger reared up inside him. “No! I want to know what’s going on.” The windows rattled, and the adults turned to him with concerned expressions. J

    Chapter 8

@Dan South Why now? Puberty plus the encounter with Oblivion, which caused Pro's blocks on Travis's memories/powers to weaken. BTW, chapter 9 is in the moderation cue as we speak and should be approved shortly.
  15. frozenphenix

    Chapter 8

@drsawzall Exactly. His powers are energy based and must recharge after using them. Also, Pro placed blocks on them and Travis’s memory until he can handle them without going all Dark Phoenix. But Oblivion screwed up his plan. And Oblivion’s endgame is pushing Travis toward the dark side and, failing that, to manipulate him into fulfilling the prophecy.

    Chapter 8

When Travis awoke, he was in a sparsely decorated room with two windows and a table. Someone had hooked him up to an IV bag full of a clear liquid. His head throbbed, his body aching in places he didn’t know he could ache. The last thing he remembered was the fight with Giovanni. That pipsqueak probably has something to do with this. He sat up only to discover he was handcuffed to the bed. “Giovanni, if you let me go, I promise you a death quick.” When no one replied, he pulled at the cuffs

    Chapter 7

William Smith had been a DMRC agent for nearly 30 years, and he showed it. The balding, pudgy man had long since stopped caring about being gregarious. In his work, good manners were a luxury he couldn’t afford. The Department for Metahuman Research and Control, commissioned by DARPA to investigate unusual incidents, had the goal of finding candidates for their super-soldier program. Most of the time, it turned out to be false alarms caused by over-panicky people, but sometimes they hit pa

    Chapter 6

JJ, nose taped-up, lip-busted, face bruised, visited David in the hospital and couldn’t help laughing at the sight. “Shut up." David flipped him off."It’s not that bad.” “Right. I hear the eggplant look is so in right now.” He dodged David’s incoming spitball. “Real mature, Green. What are you, five?” JJ launched a spitball of his own. “Aw, you shrimp. You got me right in my eye.” JJ loaded his straw with another spitball. “That’s what your mom said.” They burst out lau

@drsawzall They'll escape, but only after Travis's head mate makes with the fireballs.
  22. frozenphenix

    Chapter 5

@Dan South No. In a later chapter, Dr. Hu reveals that the government agents holding Travis captive doused him with a compound similar to napalm in an effort to stop his escaping. The extensive damage he suffered from this compound exhausted his powers in a bid to keep him alive. Afterward, they lay dormant, "recharging", until his confrontation with Oblivion reawakened them.

    Chapter 5

Jenny Adams nibbled her thumbnail to the quick as she checked the readout on the EEG machine, shaking her head. A week had passed, and still no change. It didn’t make sense. When they’d brought Travis into ER, he had several lacerations, many broken or bruised ribs, and a fractured skull. Yet, most of his wounds had healed in a matter of hours, save two broken ribs. While she had seen some strange cases in her time at St Michael’s, none were as Outer Limits worthy. So far, she and th
