The rest of that weekend and the following week were interesting to say the least. Even after his brother had calmed down and apologized for his outburst, Jason tended to walk around as though on eggshells. We continued to eat dinner together, and I did what I could to keep the conversation going, but sometimes it was like pulling teeth. Saturday was pleasant enough. Thank you for all of the ongoing comments. When I was 40 years old, I worked with a young man whose father literally through him thru' a window when he came out. Personally, I cannot understand how a parent can act that way. But just a day or two after my son died at age 28 days in 1976, there was a news story in which the anchor said, "In America this year, it is estimated that over 2,000 will die at the hands of their parents." I wailed and railed at my Dad, "Why does God give children to those who will kill them and take them from those of us who would die to have them?" Being at a loss for words, my Dad said, "Dan, it is not for us to understand." It still hurts.

A note to all readers that might come back to this spot. I see that I pulled a few strings with chapters 6, 7, and 8, and I'm not surprised. Those chapters were very difficult to write and caused many tears while doing so. And all just to portray the depth of my own pain in chapter 7. Tom's homophobic attitudes most likely came from HIS father and festered into his own parenthood. But I'm a dreamer, so fortunately, all of the characters were strong enough to survive these events. Future chapters will portray that strength and the love that they all share. Being the emotional person that I am, tears spring up even now as I think about the future. As Alex said, "later, paper dudes (and dudess).

I've never worshiped in a church that would have had that effect on Tom. My congregation at the time might have been mildly intolerant but nowhere close to homophobic. The time-line as described was misleading. Pop spent much of that 4 hours with Mitchell. And then obviously, nursing a Guinness. But yes, he was much slower to respond that on the previous occasion. My bad.

Alex's Diary - Oh diary, I wish I had someone to talk to besides you, but mom and dad are at a business meeting at church and Uncle Pop is busy. Oh God, is he busy. Your in-depth comments always so endearing. Obviously, some of Pop's remarks reflect my own opinionated attitudes, for which I apologize, even though I'm not likely to change at this point. Actually, Pop's actions were there so i could include the "high keening cries" that I was personally experiencing at the time as I dwelt with thoughts of what I missed by not halving the son I so desperately wanted. Of course, that deep disappointment is the basis for this entire story. Oh, and I loved your final sentence.

I laid Jason on his bed, the sleeping pill having obviously done its job. As I turned and walked towards Mitchell's room, I prayed that he had used the past hour to calm down and prepare himself for a rational discussion. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I am not surprised by the comments I have received on this chapter. All will be explained in Chapter 7, with Alex's reaction in chapter 7a, which is really just a subpart of 7. It wasn't easy to write and 7 was even more so. You will understand when you read it. It's in the queue now. Thanks to those who persevere.

I loved algebra and English. I served in Viet Nam as an aerial observer over the DMZ. After only 3 months, I was the senior AO and had only been a 2nd Lt for 9 months. I left thinking that the South Vietnamese couldn't be any worse off under Communism. Civilians were allowed outside the wire during daylight hours to scavenge in the US garbage dump.

I've been talking about Jason and me a lot lately, and I wouldn't want you to get the impression that I was ignoring Mitchell. In fact, I was enjoying Mitchell's advancement through puberty, too. His 17th birthday was just three months after Jason's 14th. One of the presents he wanted was a tape of Jason singing some of the songs he had written, with the fab four playing backup. Now that I've read this chapter, I can see why it got so many reactions. The description of Rusty giving his first blow job was so much like my own first experience just 4 years ago. And then the kiss afterwards just put icing on the cake. I hope their love continues to grow.
