Chapter 35. "Ten more Power Masters will reach Maynor's Castle within the next two hours, my Lord. He discarded every measure against our observations a short while ago and it is now clear that each party consists of one Power Master and an escort." "He flaunts them, Uirebon, and seeks to daunt my resolve with the knowledge that each arriving Power Master will augment his strength. The onslaught last night with the aid of the two early arrivals was designed to instil despair. He believes

I checked through the text to be sure, but there is no evidence that Maynor knows a dragon construct exists. Even Aglaron and Uirebon only learnt of it from Ranevargar's passing comment about a failed experiment. They dismiss the possibility of a reawakening in a conversation held when Maynor was absent and recovering from being overextended. Maynor, of a certainty, has his own sources of information so we can't preclude the possibility, of course. His disdain for Ranevargar as a foolish and spent force in the Realms suggests it's unlikely he sees much point in being informed about Ranevargar related matters. ... but then again ...who knows?
-
Lol - all he wants is the whole of Faerie.
-
Again, thanks. Yes, those monsters are a real worry - and what can this new pattern of large grouping mean?
-
Kieran has noticed the unusual grouping of monsters ahead so there must be something going on. Hopefully Maynor hasn't added control of the Dead World Monsters to his bag of aggressive tricks. ??
-
Thanks for your input, M. - a very thoughtful observation. There's an ebb and flow of course but I'm hopeful that the new levels of community acceptance will increasingly help at the family level.
-
My reaction is to be regarded as a smile rather than a laugh. - My father was a preacher man.
-
Ranevargar looked deeply into Kieran's mind and found nothing except for the vaguest hint of anomaly. I wonder where Kieran might find the ability to surpass his new mentor. Maynor has told Ranevargar that he's close to instigating something major so it can't be long before we know what it is. Whoo! That's a major, major weight you're intimating for young shoulders.
-
Yes, Maynor's great ambition is certainly backed by enough intelligence and cunning to deceive both the High King and the Lore Master. That Ranevargar has been a wonderful help to, and huge influence on, the companions, is evidenced by this extraordinary expedition they've undertaken to help him. Surely he must be as they see him?
-
Yes, as readers we've known all along, but my impression with Kieran's reaction is that he may be using the sensible advice from Ranevargar as a prop for not 'cogitating' too much on this new and rather overwhelming revelation. Hmm! I wonder if it's too overwhelming?

Chapter 34. The first wake-up call brought a mumbled chorus of groans and a reluctant stirring which then subsided to motionless denial of the need to do anything. Woorawa’s second call, more insistent, brought a strongly expressed imitation of very vulgar sound, then some muted snorts of amusement. Rhys was awake and, obviously, at least two others. How did Woorawa always manage this, like he had a built in alarm clock? Kieran stretched, muscles complaining, and sighed inwardly at the

Thank you, Will, I'm delighted to hear that the story can evoke a reaction like that.

I completely agree. Many of the stories are indeed 'truly fascinating' and I wonder how much ancient knowledge and wisdom is being overlooked and lost as the remaining sites diminish.

Ok! I have an admission to make here. The blue glow in the opening of the story is a mistake. It was written before the idea of coding each Realm Lord with a signature colour. - Kieran/blue, Aglaron/purple, Ranevargar/green, etc so in fact it should read as 'the purple glow from within the balcony'. It's a revision that completely passed me by before this reminder. I've always looked on that watcher as someone assigned to monitor security for the High Castle. Overall though, many things in the Realms are not what they seem at first sight.
-
Yes, the High King is in dire straits but to hold his position for 1400 years or whatever it is he must be pretty canny. The beast? You mean the Dragon construct? Whoo! That's one very scary prospect. And, again, Wow! - so many fascinating ideas.
-
Wow! The idea of eating Monster flesh didn't enter my head. Ranevargar said they weren't real flesh but a manifestation of power so I reckon that makes the idea of eating them even more bizarre. - lol - what's that old song? - Monster Mash!

Chapter 33. Kieran kept watch as the first rays of sunlight caught the snow-covered mountain tops and worked their way steadily lower in a breathtaking contrast against the darkness of all the lower reaches, and wondered why Woorawa hadn't yet called for a stop. Their extra early wake-up had given them at least an hour of walking without Monster attacks and a good start to the trek round the flank of the closest mountain. "Are the Monsters on the move yet, Kieran? I thought we migh

Maynor surely is confident in his prospects. Kieran is already worried about the rate at which Ranevargar's shields are being battered - it could be a race against time - and there's all that ruby energy, too, which hasn't yet come into play.
-
He's sure putting out energy - the High King is 'aghast' at the prospect of what Maynor will be able to throw at him. Maynor's plan has been developing for at least 150 years according to Uirebon. - it brings to mind that very apt quotation - 'The best laid schemes o' mice an' men Gang aft a-gley ' Hmm! Apply that broadly and the High King, or even the companions, might have unknowns ahead of them as well.
